Hanover County Water Update — January 11, 2025 12 p.m.
An update on Hanover County's water.
Notes:
Boil water advisories were lifted today at 11:31 a.m. for Hanover County, Henrico County and the City of Richmond after a second round of water-quality testing confirmed the water is safe to consume throughout the region.
“I want to sincerely thank our residents and businesses for their patience and understanding throughout this challenging situation,” said County Administrator John A. Budesky. “This experience has highlighted the resilience of our community and the commitment of our staff and partners, who came together and worked tirelessly to ensure our residents were safe and supported.”
The Hanover County Board of Supervisors has directed County Administration to conduct an initial after-action review of this unprecedented incident within the next 30 days. Additionally, the Board has tasked County Administration and the Department of Public Utilities with reevaluating existing plans and initiatives to strengthen Hanover’s long-term water supply and ensure greater accountability.
Hanover County will also actively participate in regional after-action initiatives with the City of Richmond to fully understand the cause of this incident and support the development of measures to prevent it from happening again.
"I want to recognize our Public Utilities team for their efforts in safely restoring service in Hanover and for collaborating with our partners in Henrico County and the City of Richmond to address this regional challenge together," added Budesky.
During the advisory, which began on Tuesday, Hanover County distributed 9,000 cases of bottled water and supplied 9,000 gallons of potable water to residents across multiple distribution sites. This effort was made possible through the coordinated support of Hanover Fire-EMS, the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, dedicated County staff and countless volunteers - all working together to ensure the community’s safety and well-being.
Numerous local organizations, businesses and neighbors stepped up to ensure those in need had access to water and other essential resources, demonstrating the true spirit of Hanover County.
The following donated bottled water for the County’s distribution sites:
• Virginia American Water
• Wegmans
• Kings Dominion
• Walmart
• Goochland County Fire-Rescue
Many others also provided vital assistance and support this week, including:
• Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin
• Virginia Senator Ryan T. McDougle
• Virginia Delegate Scott Wyatt
• Virginia Artesian
• Hanover County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Greater Richmond Medical Reserve Corps (volunteered at four water distribution sites)
•Winns Baptist Church and Rural Point Baptist Church, Fairmount Christian Church (offered water and showers)
• Hanover County Public Schools and Patrick Henry YMCA (offered showers)
• Metro Richmond Flying Squad (provided warming shelter for workers)
Here are some steps to take now that the boil water advisory is over:
• Turn on cold water taps one at a time and run water for 10 minutes, starting with faucets on the lowest floor
• Check faucet screens and clean and remove any trapped particles
• Flush the refrigerator water by running it for 5 minutes
• Throw away all ice; let the icemaker container fill up completely and throw away the new ice. Then clean the icemaker container and replace the filter
The County’s water distribution efforts have now ended. Residents who need assistance should call 804-365-6140.
Hanover County encourages residents to support local businesses as they recover from the recent water service disruption. Many businesses were directly impacted, and continued community support is vital to their recovery and long-term success.

Thank you for this update and thanks to all County staff, community organizations and individuals who have helped get us through this difficulty.
No water In Lonaconing as of this morning jan 9th western maryland whole town is out due to busted pipe
Data centers should not be allowed until sufficient water resources are in place. People are more important than a bunch of servers.
I think that this highlights the need for the County to take a good look at the water supply infrastructure and the impacts of new large developments and water users (like data centers).
What is the purpose of making those dudes stand there?
The water hand out ran out. No water in Mechanicsville! This sucks!!!
I have lived in this county for over 20 years and I have heard the conversations about how we don't have the needed backup capacity for water. Does this situation highlight that concern and if so is the county going to finally address this need? We have been building, building, building but have we been ensuring that our infrastructure is capable of carrying the critical load? I remember Richmond and Hanover being without power for more than a week and we never had a water issue.
Good job on communicating with the public. But, has the city of Richmond been negligent in maintenance of electrical equipment that protects the water services to its residents and surrounding counties?
Probably fine, just creating a need. #capitalism

Way to go Chance!
Had Great Time.. Thanks to all for putting on this event.
That's awesome 🎉
I simply cannot believe you're calling this a momentous occasion and the group with shovels are all smiles. You should be ashamed and offering apologies to every Hanover County resident. You're years behind schedule and now Montpelier, who has fewer cell towers and fewer way to connect that don't cost a fortune have been pushed back to F7 and will not see service before Q3 of 2025. It's just sickening. We've been waiting years and years.
Nice song! Who's it by?

I'm a resident of NJ, but have my eyes (and heart) set on moving to Hanover County soon. "Hear in Hanover" is only adding to my eagerness! I especially appreciate this episode because I was the assistant director of the Parks & Recreation Dept. for Salem, Mass., 2006-2016. Best wishes on success for the Tomato Festival! (Is Tommy too obvious for the mascot's name??)

What a legend ❤
Did Hanover taxpayers pay to stock a lake in a private neighborhood that is not open to the public?
So did the county pay for these fish? If so, and tax dollars were used... why can't the public fish this lake? The public gets chased off by the same guy any chance he gets...
Just a guess, but probably waiting for the population to rebound. If they just put fish in less than a week ago, and we assume they put in juvenile fish, we gotta assume itll take at least a year for a breeding population to establish itself. And maybe even another few years to start getting trophy or edible fish. Edit: reading the description is that it's now specifically a catch and release lake for this reason. It also says it is a private lake.

Hanover County does a great job with their media videos. They are really wonderfully done. I appreciate all the efforts that go into making these bits of news available to all of us. Thank you!
