Apostle's Mailbox
United States
Приєднався 15 сер 2023
Expect to be challenged, expect to disagree from time to time (or more frequently!), expect to learn here and there, and expect teaching that isn't under pressure to toe a party line. There is only one Body of Christ, and Jesus calls us to love and bear with one another--not war with one another over doctrines and associations and denominations and brands.
Here at Apostle's Mailbox, you'll find exhortation for the unity of the church and expository teaching from an ex-pastor with a desire to see the Bride of Christ healthy and ready for the coming of the groom. My background is broadly evangelical, but I have a bent towards learning and growth rather than defending the traditions of one segment of the global body of Christ--I'd rather have the Spirit of God use the Word of God to change my understanding than remain stagnant in a mistaken belief.

Back to Basics - Remember the day of your salvation
John 6 contains a lot of material that is used in arguing for or against advanced doctrinal topics. While it's not wrong to try to understand what Jesus was talking about in today's passage, it's more important not to miss one very key point he makes.

Walled Gardens - Do walls keep out the bad, or the good? (Ep. 50)

If you're trying to rule a kingdom in the 1400's, good strong walls are a great asset. If you're trying to maximize profits, keeping competition at bay is very helpful. If you're part of a religious organization, chances are someone has (or will) try to build some walls to "protect" it. Is this good, or bad? When we're taught that the Bible is God's Word and we're given a copy of it written in English, we often assume that understanding its meaning should be a pretty straightforward task. As we see in today's episode, the nature of time, geography, culture, and translation warn us that it's very easy to misunderstand communication, even when its given to us in our native language. Today we'll learn...
Water Walker - Putting words into Jesus' mouth (Ep. 48)

Today we discuss the day when Jesus walked on water, and some of the Old Testament passages that have been suggested as the background context which helps interpret the passage. One suggestion is a possibility (Psalm 77), another is a perhaps more interesting option (Job 9), and the last is probably best considered an example of what not to do when interpreting Scripture (Isaiah 46). We'll talk...

Michael Heiser once said that it's the "strange" things in the Bible that are important. In today's episode on John 6, we consider the various "strange" details that show up in the feeding of the 5,000, and discover that they all point back to the Exodus, Moses, and the promise of a capital-p Prophet who Yehovah promised to raise up from among the Israelite people. We'll see everything from Man...

In a world of AI, air travel, and microwaves, working hard to accomplish a task seems like such a waste of effort. Nevertheless, understanding divine self-revelation written in ancient foreign languages t...

That's the problem with god and the Bible, it Should be easy to comprehend. Also it has many contradictions and its history is very hit and miss. There was no mass exodus from Egypt, nor was there a Abraham nor Moses!
If we allow that God is an eternal being (as in, without beginning) who is outside of our experienced physical reality, who designed the entire system (down to DNA and quantum mechanics) and created it out of nothing, I don't see how you can claim that "god and the Bible...Should be easy to comprehend." Practically everything in it would be an over-simplification! As for the mass exodus, it's far more honest to say that "we are lacking archaeological evidence to validate a mass exodus from Egypt ever occurred," but that is far from proving that it never happened. For a long time many people believed Israel's King David wasn't a real person. Then, in 1993 a stele discovered at Tel Dan "verified" the Davidic Kingdom's existence archaeologically. I don't know how on earth you would "know" if Abraham or Moses ever existed, because they never reigned over the kind of settlement that builds things out of stone--their existence was nomadic, and it would be nigh-on impossible for anything less than stone to survive with a name intact on it. "nor was there a Abraham nor Moses" is a claim that simply cannot be verifiably substantiated as true or false in any meaningful way. If we can look at an ancient religion and culture (that persists until today) who find their very identity in being Abraham's descendent, and consider that their 3000+ year old set of religious texts considers these to be real people, it seems quite presumptuous to write them off as non-existent.
so trinitarianism is a shell game... you are so close... shell games to dupe marks really makes a perfect analogy tho.
no one will ever read this anyhoo, but yeah, the kingdom of heaven is like a matryoshka doll, the church is the baby inside. The kingdom of heaven is like Adam rejoins Eve as one and re-enter Paradise to eat fruit with God. lol have a nice day youtube algorithm!
13:19 What is "hard to understand" about Paul is what Paul himself admits. He has a bias. His Theophany occurred suddenly, post-pentecost. His Theology reflects the sudden conversion bias. Paul has Inspired writings, for sure. But we often put the cart before the horse. We put theology before the gospel. Jesus said "the kingdom of heaven is at hand" Tell the children about the kingdom, and the pearl of great price. It is so simple, You are on the right track, keep going!
"we put theology before the gospel" is well-said.
My son in law and his worship team did a short study with this book. The book blessed him and he believes it brought him to deeper place of worship. He shared it with me too. I pray it does continue to wake up the souls of others as we sing a hallelujah! Thumbs up for me.

John 5:25 is in line with John’s’ style and language of using the present tense with a future sense, similar to the so-called prophetic perfect, past tense of prophecy. In other words, examples of the “as good as done” form of prophetic speech. * John 4:23 to the Samaritan woman "the hour is coming and now is [here]"; ref. to Pentecostal, outpouring of the spirit, the Temple or holy places no longer needed; * John 16:32 "the hour is coming, indeed it has come [past tense], when you will be scattered"; * 1 John 2:18 "this is the last hour; the antichrist is coming," and "many antichrists have come." NOTE the tense structure of Old English only had two tenses (present and past) some of which survives today, e.g., "I return to England next week." “I am shopping tomorrow.” These are similar examples of a present tense with a future sense. More interesting Wayne Grudem "Systematic Theology" quotes, Rev. 1: “Was Jesus fully human? He was so fully human that even those who lived and worked with him for thirty years, even those brothers who grew up in his own household, did not realize that he was anything more than another very good human being. They apparently had no idea that he was God come in the flesh.” page 535 “Nowhere do we have an indication of the human and divine natures talking to each other or struggling within Christ, or any such thing….the Bible itself does not say “Jesus’ human nature did this” or “Jesus’ divine nature did that”. Page 555 “Anything that is DONE by one nature or the other is done by the person of Christ.” (Italics in original, all caps added.) page 561 Notice that the natures “do” things, and as a result, the person does those things. Grudem's "person" is merely a puppet of the nature! “Evangelical theologians in previous generations have not hesitated to distinguish between things done by Christ’s human nature but not by his divine nature, or by his divine nature but not by his human nature. It seems that we have to do this if we are willing to affirm the Chalcedonian statement about “the property of each nature being preserved.”” page 558 When we are talking about Jesus’ human nature, we can say that he ascended to heaven and is no longer in the world (John 16:28; 17:11; Acts 1:9-11). But with respect to his divine nature, we can say that Jesus is everywhere present: “Where two or three are gathered in my name…”” page 558
Great quotes and remind me of the Catholic Roman theologian Thomas Hart in his book “To Know and Follow Jesus”: “In Chalcedon and the theological development that flows from it, Jesus is called ‘man’ in the generic sense (human), but not ‘a man.’ He has a human nature, but is not a human person. The person in him is the second person of the Blessed Trinity. Jesus does not have a human personal center. This is how the Council gets around the possible problem of a split personality.” Therefore, “the Chalcedonian formula [Jesus is truly God and truly man] makes a genuine humanity impossible” (p. 44, 46). The Protestant Historian Bishop A.T. Hanson “During my theological formation I was well instructed in the traditional account of the incarnation of God in Jesus Christ. I distinctly remember being told that the Word of God, when he assumed human nature, assumed impersonal humanity: that Jesus Christ did not possess a human personality; that God became man in Jesus Christ, but that he did not become a man. (A.T. Hanson, Grace and Truth, p. 1). In other words, according to these well-known trini bishops, scholars and historians, Jesus was never even a man, a human person!
Those are fascinating quotes!

Bro, you are the one who cant see the forest! First of all, are u unitarian? Secondly, you reason EXACTLY like a jehovahs witness. They say the same thing. "It was a wrong idea on part of the PHARISEES". You cant seem to see the gravitas of Jesus claim. John simply recaps the incident. Like a news reporter. 1- Jesus DID BREAK the sabbath. That has nothing to do w sinlessness on Jesus part. In other passages- like John ch 8- Jesus reminds them there are MITIGATING circumstances to do so. For eg. Circumcision. Or for humane reasons- if your donkey falls into a pit, etc. He even quotes the old testament that David ate the showbread when hungry- which was not lawful- so Jesus and his apostles could 'thresh' some grain on the sabbath if they were hungry. This time, in John 5, he doesnt do that. He instead speaks of his own ONTOLOGICAL nature as GOD, because he says the FATHER works ON THE SABBATH, and jews believed that of course, and I WORK ON THE SABBATH. So whats the big deal? Well the sabbath is Gods holy day. 'YOU will keep MY DAY holy.' MY DAY. Jesus is saying I can do whatever i want as LORD of the sabbath. This is outrageous blasphemy to the jews, because he is claiming a prerogative that is only JEHOVAHS. After jesus prefaces his explanation by admitting he is subject to the Father in authority- i can do nothing of my own initiative- he then lists point after point of how he is EQUAL TO GOD! Father raises the dead, gives life- me too. Whatever father does- me too. Honor me THE SAME as u honor the Father. Fathet judges NOONE . I DO ALL THE JUDGING. Father is life, I AM LIFE. I GIVE LIFE. On and on... how can u miss that? Dr Keener must be a jehovah witness...
Your reasoning is faulty. You are artificially combining both statements. We can call God Father due to the presence of the Holy Spirit within us. And the Holy Spirit is equal to God.
Ah, but John 1:33 tells us that at Jesus' baptism the Holy Spirit came and descended upon him and remained upon him. And so, by the reasoning you give that we can say "Father" to God (ie. the Holy Spirit being present in us), that also was true of Jesus. In other words, your very argument undermines this statement as proof that Jesus is equal to God. Note that I am not trying to argue that it proves Jesus *wasn't* equal to God, simply that this statement is not sufficiency of proof for equality with God that the Pharisees took it to be. They are misunderstanding him, as they *almost always do* in John.
Furthermore, I don't think the argument about the Holy Spirit's presence is very strong either. After all, who is doing the speaking? If calling God "Father" requires equality with God, then the Holy Spirit can call God, "Father," but I cannot--unless having the Holy Spirit in me makes me equal with God. And that is a claim I would vehemently disagree with.
@@ApostlesMailbox Thank you for your response. I understand your position better now. Although I should point out that the Holy Spirit was involved in the birth of Jesus. I don’t know of anyone else who can say that. But I respect your view about the statement of Jesus. The point that I was really trying to make was that it is only by the Holy Spirit that we can call God Father.
@@Gcod3x Ah, yes, it is the Spirit that confirms we are sons and daughters, adopted through Jesus Christ the firstborn Son, who is certainly the only one of whom the Scriptures say the Holy Spirit was involved in his birth!

Of course, and where'd the early-model protestant's go wrong? ah, yes: *sexual* immorality was at the very *core* of their acting-up... that shows you why no Christian can ever endorse the petrine office, nor the 'god' that, while the Deity Himself, set up that tyrannical office that has been foisting things that're intrinsically immoral as "good".

The architects of Fiducia Supplicans imagine that God will bless a relationship that his Church teaches is "objectively disordered" (CCC #2358). How stupid and absurd. Thank you for actually reading the document🙏
Thank you for your honesty. As a catholic I read this document and it was crystal clear and easy to understand. My brother you have explained it better than anyone else I've heard on UA-cam. Including Catholics. God bless you.
BCC’s in the house!!!
Thanks for shining the light (and taking the time to actually research it). Luke 12:2. We're called to search for the truth. It's one thing to trash someone's denomination (coming from other Christians), but dang -- get it right. And in this case, those criticizing Pope Francis were wrong. He never said same-sex marriages should be blessed. He never said the Catholic Church was changing its position on same-sex marriages. In fact, Fiducia Supplicans goes out of its way to make that point.
The same-sex couple ‘blessing’ causes a number of questions. Why is it couple blessing if “People are blessed; not the union”? What is a homosexual couple seeking by asking for a blessing? What is the Church offering in response? What is the Holy Spirit called for and what is exactly being blessed? What is a spiritual purpose of such a ‘blessing’ and what sort of a particular help it intends to provide? Love and acceptance can make miracles of soul transformation, and Pope Francis' vision on the same-sex unions seems to be about love and acceptance. Yet, the same-sex couple blessing would make sense if the Church dumps viewing the same-sex relationship per ser as a sin. Without that, such a 'blessing' appears conflicting and self-contradictory. The entire issue of the homosexuality as such and the sin does not look straightforward at all. For example, some people refer to Leviticus 20:13: "If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them". Does this mean that about 4% of human population should be now "put to death"? Would it be a proclaimed Christian way of love and acceptance? Would it be compatible with the words of our Lord: "Let He Who Is Without Sin Cast the First Stone" (John 8:7)? Apostle Paul in 1 Cor 6:9,10 was talking specifically about "men who have sex with men" with the intention to just satisfy their lust, but said nothing about homosexuality as such. The Holy Scripture condemns sexual lust in all its appearances - ‘traditional’ and ‘pervert’, but says nothing at all specifically about homosexuality and same sex people, who want to live together in love and faith. Nevertheless, this unlikely defends the incompatibility of the same-sex couple blessing with the current Church doctrines and policies. Faithfully yours, bishop Vincent Berg.
bishop Vincent Berg. that is so cool... How did you get to be called a bishop and what does that title mean? your a bishop, Andys an Apostle and here I am not even allowed or worthy to clean the toilets at a church. ( I tried ) . I'm glad to see someone use the term Abomination just like the bible says. and also you used references from the bible. Thank you. Thats a big Pluss with me. seeing as I had to look up the word Apostate because I wasn't sure of its definition. would you or Andy want to answer a new question that this video put in my mind to consider? If a man got fixed at a young age and then came back to Christ and realized that what he did might go against the Most Highs will for Man.... should he spend the money, time, and pain to get it reversed to show submission and obedience to our Creators will? oh, that brings a new thought and question... this is almost a rabbit hole topic I guess.... what if a sinner surgically changes their gender? and then realize they are acting like an abomination to the Lords way for us, do you think that they would have to get it surgically changed back in order to have a more abundant relationship with our Father in Heaven? or what about the baby's born with both? what a difficult situation that would put a Chistian parent in and hardship for the child when they come into adulthood and consider what they are and where they fit in to biblical understanding and obedience to Gods will.... maybe this is simple understanding for most, but It is an interesting/sensitive subject. my thoughts/questions on the topic of the video is: isn't all sin sin? is it corect to say: love the sinner and not the sin? as in, don't endorse or aprove of or enable the sinners sin. Just show them Gods Love. thank Yall for your time.
@@barrinhanson9493 Homosexuality exists regardless of whether we want this or not, and of whether we label this a sin or not. It is a biological reality. Homosexual people do not choose to have the variety of attractions (including sexual one) to the same sex people. It is not their free choice. There is a lot of evidence, including scientific and pastoral ones, supporting this view. It proves that homosexuality differs from polygamy, paedophilia, and any other cultural and psychological forms of sexual deviations, as we see it now. Free will and the availability of free choice for every human being is God's gift. All the God's revelations for us to this day show that the sin is a derivation from the wrong use of human free will and choice. Nothing outside our free will and choice can be viewed as sinful. Thus, homosexuality as such cannot be viewed as a sin if it is not a result of a person's free choice. - Yet, immoral sexual behaviour (regardless, homo- or hetero) can and should.
@@barrinhanson9493 A Bishop has to prove Apostolic Succession. Which means he was ordained by a Bishop who was ordained by a Bishop who was ordained by a Bishop that ultimately was ordained by an Apostle. Only the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox churches can prove this unbroken chain. Unfortunately some Christians just call themselves and others Bishops.

27:25 wow! I am agnostic, so I enjoyed the beginning for the parallels with the Mahābhārata , but stayed for the analysis. And boy, am i glad i did! Being agnostic, i always felt this in my soul.. God is the universe and everything in it, and i am just one of billions of perceptions of it. Reducing that to an object feels like heresy But im not sure i agree (not that i have to) with the conclusion and general message here: Looking to Jesus is not enough. It is about what you do. Darkness benefits evil. If god is the universe, then our actions, any action, is worship. Jesus bears our curse, but that object is not enough to save us. Its just enough for eternal life, but also eternal death.
I think our starting assumptions are what lead to the different conclusions: you assume that God *is* the universe, while Christianity maintains (and I believe) that God is transcendent/beyond the universe. Thus, Jesus taught us that he is the way *to* the God who made everything that exists, and that connection is made not by doing enough good to earn it, but by faith in him. Of course, that faith which leads us to God is just the beginning of life: it's enough to connect you to God, but I think we're in agreement that universally wrongdoing eventually leads to destruction, pain, and death (in some regard) whereas right action leads towards wholeness and peace.
to be born again ... is referring to the resurrection ... jesus was a man teaching the way to the kingdom ... then he died ... then he was resurrected from the dead .... but some will say that he is god ... god does not die nor can he die ... and if he does not die then he can not be resurrected ... the preaching of paul is the life , death , and resurrection of jesus christ
That's an interesting take--I don't think I've ever heard the second birth interpreted that way. The greek word for "again" in John 3:3 could also be translated "from above", and in 1 Peter 1, being "born again" seems to be spoken of in the past tense. The context of the conversation also seems to me to indicate spiritual birth rather than physical. Still, that is something I'm going to chew on. As for God not dying/not being able to die, that is philosophy I'm not sure I can debate, but I do agree with you that Paul emphasizes the life, death, and resurrection of "the man Jesus Christ." (Rom. 5:15-17, 1 Cor. 15:20-21)
There's not much outside the bible re jesus. Definitely nothing re resurrection. So, intellectually honest people should reject the magical claims. Invested Christians can invoke faith for their belief. But we all know faith is a crappy way to go about the things.
Absolutely! Reader beware of words added, changed and deliberately mistranslated. Jn. 6:4 added, gives Jesus a 3 and 1/2 year ministry as the Lamb of God, making Him out to be an illegitimate Lamb of God. Sabbaths 26 times stripped from our New Testament translations. From the Koine Greek New Testament: Mt.28:1 Evening now (2) Sabbaths (ending) into the full on, over, above-lighting of the (event/day) one of (7) Sabbaths... It was the first moment of the 50 day count to Pentecost when Jesus was resurrected immediately following the weekly sabbath. The sun had just set in the West and the Moon won't rise in the East for two and a half hours. The light on, over and above this event is the Glory of God. The Greek word επιφωσκω; epi = on, over and above, phos = light is describing God's glory; the light of the world over the rebirth of His Son. Romans 6:4 you will be raised by the glory of the Father. Jesus was buried exactly 72hrs earlier when the stone dropped into place at the first moment of the High Sabbath of Unleavened Bread in the middle of the week. There were two Preparation days and two Sabbaths that week, as normal. The Early Roman Church manipulated the scriptures , changing who Jesus was and what He did. Jesus was fulfilling His Father's appointed times all on time, in perfect order to the smallest detail. The priesthood was TRANSFERRED and the Law was TRANSFERRED. The only thing that was changed was the address.
I like your message, not 100 on everything you said, the water and spirit part, I don't think it has to do with baptism, in the very next verse Jesus says that which is flesh is flesh, so I believe this is speaking more to our natural birth, in contrast to the birth of Spirit, I get your idea of being strong in your faith, and not relying on certain teachers, I agree to a point but certain teachers have brought me to examine passages dig deeper to help me to defend my faith when being confronted by unbelievers, so guys like J Warner Wallace have some good material in that regard, you mentioned not ascribing to some of his work, without any real examples. You said you studied this or that and that is why you were not a fan of his work, or he overstated without really saying what exactly...anyway good job. God bless Shalom
Taking "born of water" could very possibly point to physical birth, that is correct. I don't have specifics from all the various shades of inaccuracies that cropped up, but one I do remember is that (our teacher at least) made a comment about something which the historian Thallus wrote concerning the death of Jesus. I thought it was strange that I hadn't heard the name Thallus before, so I googled it right there in class (yes, this is poor etiquette...). As it turns out, we don't actually have copies of the history written by Thallus, much less the specific passage being alluded to. What we do have is a reference from Sextus Julius Africanus (~ 160-240 AD). ACTUALLY, though, we don't have Africanus' work either. What we have is Syncellus, around 800 AD, quoting Africanus referring to Thallus talking about an eclipse, possibly in relation to the darkness at the time of the crucifixion. So even if Africanus was spot-on and fair to Thallus' writing, our only extant witness of the "source material" is twice-removed and 700+ years after the fact. This was not expressed in class. It was simply stated along the lines of "Thallus, a non-christian historian, also attests..." (William Lane Craig explains in a more nuanced manner at www.reasonablefaith.org/writings/question-answer/thallus-on-the-darkness-at-noon). What else do we know about Thallus? Well, not much, really. Does this make for interesting trivia? For sure. It's it argument-winning evidence? Maybe not so much.
There's some spectacular ministry happening! It would be so different to live in a city you can't drive to
Excellent stuff Andy!
There is no truth in any iron age myth
WOOHOO!!! that was awsome! Thank you .
how’s life?, Apostle's~ that's unusual ~ 🌟
Water into blood? Are you talking about Exodus Ch. 7? The first sign God commanded of Moses was to turn his staff into a serpent. Water into blood was NOT the first sign? Is there another instance of turning water into blood?
Yes, you are correct, that the first demonstrated sign by Moses was the staff into a serpent--yet this would have been done before a limited audience with Pharaoh. Of the 10 plagues that all of Egypt witnessed, water to blood was the first (Ex. 7:14-24). It is fascinating to me that God prepared Moses to do two signs (staff > serpent and leprous / healed hand) before promising to turn the Nile to blood (Ex. 4:1-9), but it's not recorded that Moses actually performed the second sign. I can't think of Jesus doing anything correlated with the staff, but he certainly healed lepers during his ministry.
@@ApostlesMailbox you didnt state it that way in the video. That makes me cautious of your teaching. In fact, I dont think ive ever heard anyone teach that Moses was a type-cast of Jesus. The serpent on the pole and the rock that Moses struck are definitely Christ types. I'll have to think about the Moses/Christ type similarities. God Bless!
@@r.fortner4661 That's fair, please forgive my imprecision. It is good for you to listen with discernment: if I have not already been wrong on some point, it is only a matter of time before I state something that is in some way mistaken--no matter how much care I take to avoid doing so! This is true of course with every one who teaches, no matter how generally reliable they are. (It is also related to why Jesus warned us in Matthew 23 to not call anyone Rabbi, "my teacher"). I'm glad to have brought the connection between Jesus and Moses to your attention, but I'm far from the first one to say anything about it. As usually, everything we know was at one time presented to us for the very first time, and then as we poke around we realize that even though it seems a novelty to us, there are many others who have known it for so long that they take it for granted. Sometimes this results in people switching denominational organizations within Christianity, since they figure that another group who "already knew that" must have all the other answers figured out as well--a dangerous assumption to make! Ideally we would all learn and grow together by listening to each other graciously as we soberly weigh out what is being claimed with the help of the Holy Spirit and the Bible and other believers. Thank you for the blessing, and may God bless you as well!
I really enjoyed this video- I appreciate your perspective on believers who have different beliefs on certain issues. Your comments about distrusting the doctrines instituted by governing officials centuries into the church age has me thinking about how much trust modern protestants put in the novel teachings of people in just the last 200-300 years.. It seems to me that the restorationists aspects of this period produced some of the most prolific heretical (totally apostate) groups. The restorationists had zero confidence in tradition.. to the point that they said the church was completely corrupt until their day and it was their calling to restore the church.. I see this extreme disassociation from the historical church as falling off into the other ditch.. I personally believe the enemy is waging war within the church from this angle and has sadly led many astray since the first and second great awakenings.
Certainly we're all at risk of throwing the baby out with the bathwater whenever it's time to clean up beliefs that are straying from truth...just as church leaders in the 300-400s and later also behaved in reactionary ways to perceived deviations of their days. This makes me want to work on seeking answers the same way I do a crossword puzzle: in pencil. I think my first experience in re-evaluating long-held beliefs was one of those "novel" teachings you might be referring to of the past 200-300 years, dispensational premilennialism's pre-trib rapture teachings. That was probably 7 or more years ago, but I still tend to answer that question in pencil: "post-tribulational premillennialism seems to be the easiest explanation for me to reconcile with Scripture, but if I turn out to be wrong, I'm not going to be terribly surprised."
Did I miss the Peru video yet? .
still waiting for a Peru video...
The joy it would bring to know that in you the Fullness of God is pleased to dwell...
I caught that! (For those unaware, the “yah” at the end is a short form of Yahweh, so that word literally means “praise Yahweh!”)
