    Honestly, it’s been good for me because I treat the shops as disposable. I usually work at a place for about 18 months and save up some money and then quit to go on a trip or do a personal project or something. I don’t see any other way as the shops never offer more than 2 weeks per year vacation and that isn’t enough time to rest your body in this job. The best thing about being a good tech is that I can get a decent paying job any time I want one. The resume gaps have never been an issue.

    • @BobbyBeltzyt
      @BobbyBeltzyt Годину тому

      @@zornslemon i tell young techs to do this to gain experience and build resume. But if they are looking for stability its always fleet i tell them. People say gaps on your resume and multiple jobs don’t look good but i never had a issue along with other people i talk to.

    • @zornslemon
      @zornslemon 15 хвилин тому

      @ I definitely agree with moving around for experience. Different shops will specialize in different things, plus you will pick up tricks from every tech you work with. I’ve done multiple dealer brands as well as used cars, mom and pop, quick service and classic cars. I’m thinking I’d like to do racing next, I’ve also always wanted to try an engine builder.

    i was looking at going pro in the 90s . i learned about flat rate.... no i started out on 70s vehicles , broke off bolts are common on them that take an entire day for me to worry about a day....

    Folks, flat rate worked in the 60s, 70s (maybe 80s) at the latest! When a tune up, was "really" a tune up! Points and condenser, timing light, distributor caps and rotors, manually adjusting timing, overhauling wheel cylinders, slave cylinders and master cylinders, turning flywheels, rotors and drums! Starter spinning and won't engage? Remove the starter, replace the starter drive and reinstall the same starter! Overhauling alternators! Making power steering and air conditioning hoses in house! THAT my friends is when flat rate worked! In this R&R throw away, recycle world these days, flat rate sucks immensely! Like the host says, get you some kind of fleet/municipal job if you enjoy turning wrenches! Yeah, I'm old!🔧👍

      You say you are old, but you get it i cant tell you how many times i have to explain to these retired old times that it doesn’t work anymore. Times and cars are changing and the pay system needs to as well.

    Making some of the most money as i ever had in my life with flat rate. Unfortunately its Hella stressful and complete bullshit. The amount of money I am producing for them can easily afford them to pay me more then 25% of the door rate (like it was 50/50 back in the day). The part that annoys me the most is that the company is the only one who benefits 100% of the time. The technician can make good money yes, but at the expense of joint injuries, owning tools, etc... while the customer is always getting bent over and fucked! I am not saying that i think the customer should pay less on all jobs, but a lot of the time it simply doesn't make sense. If you can finish a job consistently in half the book time, why is the book time so high? Because the technician is just as greedy as the shop, yet has no balls to call the shop out on the BS because they themselves are hypocrites pretending its "fair".

    • @BobbyBeltzyt
      @BobbyBeltzyt 16 годин тому

      You make a very good point! the money can be made but at what cost? Your body? Your morals? I wish it was a nice as it was back in the day but the greedy dealerships found a way to exploit the system to benefit them.

  • @geraldnees1330

    flat rate is NOT broken. over my 50 years in the industry I made a lot of money honestly, often over 100K a year. the problem in dealerships is the way technicians are treated and abused. warranty rates is another thing...that is the car company taking money out of tech's pockets to pay for engineer mistakes.

    • @BobbyBeltzyt
      @BobbyBeltzyt День тому

      I respectfully disagree, flat rate today is very broken because of the reasons you listed. like i said it worked 50 years ago beautiful, but in order for it to work now cars and the process it takes to work on them need to change entirely.

    • @JrSpitty
      @JrSpitty 17 годин тому

      flat rate benefits the company. sometimes makes a techcnician bookoo bucks, and 100% of the time rips the customer off. So yes its a great system when you are able to rip off enough customers. No one is knocking the earning potential, its just a bullshit system to the customer. Back in the day it used to be 50/50. Now you are lucky to make 20% of the door rate.

    I was employed in the automotive repair industry from the early 1980's until 1996. It was fun at the, but honestly i don't miss the smashed and cut fingers, greasy hands that were never really clean, etc. I always had a strong mechanical aptitude since i was a kid, working on lawn mowers and motorcycles. The only work i do know is for myself, friends, and neighbors. I'm proud to say that I NEVER sold a service that was not needed and treated customers right, and had many repeat customers. The industry has changed so much since then, no way would I get back into this field.

  • @volvomods9685
    @volvomods9685 4 дні тому

    I think you’re correct, good mechanics are getting harder harder to find. For this reason. (And some more) I’ve been fortunate with the shop I am in, I have, and still am making good money at flat rate. But something needs to change. Dealerships are looking towards rehabilitation programs for someone to fill the spot (felons, etc). Then trying to push it more by funding tuition for younger students. Society wants to stay a throw away society, it’s why Tesla does not want a service center. It’s not sustainable yet we think it is and there will come a time where the right to repair hopefully takes precedence. When? How? Where? I wish I could be there right now.

    • @BobbyBeltzyt
      @BobbyBeltzyt 4 дні тому

      That dealership i worked flat rate at is apparently a absolute mess. I had a old co worker (who also quit) go back to grab some parts poked his head in a the shop and found half the techs smoking weed and playing cards in the corner of the shop. On the other hand you are right everything is throw away never maintain or fix. Its extremely disturbing when instead of it being a 30$ toaster its a 35k$ car. I don’t know the future of auto repair either but i wish i could be a fly on the wall in a shop 50 years from now.

    So how does starting a busines work in the states? Here if you want to live nice you work part time at a shop for the benefits and do you own stuff in your own garage on the side for the money, loyal customers get that "envelope" discount if you know what i mean😉

There is alot of variable’s to running a successful shop

      @BobbyBeltzyt no, a month. Because you said 200 per week, four weeks in a month 4x200=800. I just curious about how americans live their lifes. Because after watching a lot of american personal finance shows and them just giving advice that is the bare minimum to us i have gotten conflicted feelings. So is 200 a week after bills considered bad?

    • @BobbyBeltzyt
      @BobbyBeltzyt 5 днів тому

      Oh yea that is pretty bad for this field. The story was a bit of an exaggeration, but when I first started fresh out of school, I was making $8.50 an hour thankfully still living with my parents, but I had school loans to pay tool bills to pay and Shop union dues, all that on top of taxes, which wouldn’t leave me with much at the end of the week I remember paychecks being under $200 for a week. So yeah, very possible.

      @@BobbyBeltzyt ah okay. Know the main reason why the states are more expensive than here is rent or mortage payments, gas is 7 dollars a gallon. Diesel (what most people use) is like 6.6 at its worst during the energy crisis of 2022-23 it was 9 dollars a gallon both and everything has a VAT (like slaes tax) of 25.5% or 16% 200 a week before rent would be bad here and impossible ower there from what i understand. I am an automotive engineering student so i like to look at how you do it ower there in the states because you are the father of mass automobile use.

    To anyone out there who has a passion for being a mechanic here is a good plan: Go to school and become a mechanic, then open your own business instead of working for someone else. While you're in school you should be working on your credit by filling out for credit cards with high interest rates (Because you're not going to get a low interest rate card when you first start out), and use this credit card to only purchase small items you normally buy like food and make sure you pay it on time every month so that you don't have to pay extra. This way building your credit is free and it doesn't charge you anything. By the time you get out of School with your mechanic diploma you will already have good credit. Next borrow money from the bank and open up a car lot where you can buy your own vehicles fix them and make a shitload of money. My plan avoids all of the things this mechanic complained about. Mechanic work can make you good money but just like any job if you're working for someone else you're not going to climb the ladder of success because they're only giving you crumbs off of their table. The trick is to be the guy who owns the table. Good luck 😉

    The story about changing wheel bearings every 5 years and you had a problem with it because the manufacturer said they where "lifetime warranty" I don't think it's a big deal, just change them. Having two wheels fsll of isn't what should have stopped thrm from doing preventative maintenance, it should have been the question: "who and why did our techs fuck it up and how can we prevent those mistakes in the future?"

  • @CameronDC-Grimes
    @CameronDC-Grimes 7 днів тому

    I had government with union and got 30/hr. A family member is a diesel mechanic and electrician for diesel trucks and he makes $80K a year with union benefits, pension, can claim weeks paid off but he has to travel state to state doing the jobs he's sent to. They also pay for your certs and send you It really matters where you work. Flat rate jobs are not worthvit unless you're at the right shop and are the favorite. You can also do Mobile mechanic like Mathew Parker on UA-cam but his income isn't the standard and it takes time to build into that.

    I'm 25 and I was a mechanic at an Audi dealership for 1.5 years and it turned me off from ever becoming a mechanic again. Literally the first week I was there, all the older career mechanics were telling me that becoming a mechanic was the worst decision they ever made and to find a different career. Mind you, these guys were 20+ year career mechanics that had worked on various brands. Do not become a mechanic.

  • @davidkeetz

    the last story you gave happens in pretty much every industry. It's been years since I've done manual labor work but that issue is much worse in the corporate world. If you aren't in the C-suite, then it's a constant game of making sure that you aren't in the top pay bracket for middle or lower upper management, since those are the positions that are always targeted first for removal whenever lay-offs come around....and lay offs always come around at least once every 5 years, so you gotta stay under the top pay for whatever job you're doing and if you make it into the top bracket for the job you're doing, you better be looking out for a different position that you can enter where your current pay will be the bottom of the pay bracket........everyone in every corporate job I know deals with this - and it makes sense that it happens that way throughout every skilled labor job as well. The company has to make money so it's not in their interest to be hiring employees at the top of their pay scale for whatever position it is and then bumping them along quickly, because usually the employees who want a lot more than what you might normally pay for their position won't be happy if they get a promotion but their pay only increases by 5-9% in the promotion. (which is what would happen because now you've been moved into a position where your old pay rate was probably already the starting salary for the new position, if not close to the middle range and it'll tick off every one else who's already working in the new position you just got moved to if somebody gets promoted up and immediately they're making more money)........so yah...it's frustrating as an employee but it's understandable if you look at it from the perspective of someone who has to manage all of these employees across all of those positions.

  • @davidkeetz
    @davidkeetz 7 днів тому

    union people who ever only ever worked in the union usually have a super skewed view of what "hard work" is and they always think they're the most overworked people in the world.....and of course many of them do work very hard but they never have the ethic of someone who hasn't spent most of their career working for a union. Union employees who come into the private sector are some of the most difficult employees to manage.
