      I see that you have a more detailed comment which shows up in my email, but not here. So, I will give a reply to it now. Correct, this is an old video and my mind is much more geared toward thinking about areas of operations research than kinematics. This video was made when I was teaching a course strictly on kinematics, so we never considered any forces or moments. This was done in a different course. With this in mind, I would agree that an engineer should consider such generated forces when developing a design. I also agree with your statement about applications. Design requirements differ greatly when working with a low-speed cam that is used in a child's toy versus a critical machine in a factory operating at a much higher angular velocity.

    hello i want to ask does determinate truss always have the same value of reactions? or it depends on the loads pointed on the members?

      It has been awhile since I have been thinking about statics, but I will give it a try. Determinate trusses are ones that can be solved only considering equilibrium equations. For 2D problems, this includes summing forces in the "x" and "y" directions and summing moments perpendicular to the plane. If I draw a free body diagram enclosing the entire truss, then I should be able to compute the reactions using these 3 equations. I would be expecting to get a 3x3 system of linear equations. So, I would say that for 2D you would end up with up to 3 reactions.

      I don't know where you can get the drawings for the different pieces. For this video, I actually used calipers to measure a physical piece to create the drawing.

    Shouldn't the 12th Link not be included since it merely goes to a point of interest and in Grubers equation, links are connected by a minimum of two joints?

      Link 12, the bucket component, is connected to two links. Joint M connects to link 7 and join N connects to link 11. Point of interest is then on the other side of the bucket where the tips of the teeth would be located.

      The coordinates of the vertices are listed below. in the 3D sketch in SOLIDWORKS, I only have active dimensions of 36 and 60 inches. (0,0,0) (31.17691454,0,18) (31.17691454,0,-18) (20.78460969,29.39387691,0) (80.78460969,29.39387691,0)

      Collision detection would allow you to test the limits of travel while collision detection is active. Limit mates would always be enforced.

      The diagram is showing a graphical approach to solving this 2D vector problem. These types of problems can be solved in an analytical fashion focusing on the i and j components of the vectors. They can also be solved using a graphical approach and using arrows to represent the individual vectors.

      I typically have had administrative rights on the computers that I have used. If this an issue, then you may be able to change the location of your weldments directory to where you have "full control" or read/write access.

    great stuff. Couldn't tell where I was going wrong, but I was drawing my hydraulic press sliding joins in the middle of the long link so I had negative mobility from too many revolute joints. Thanks!

      Where you draw them technically shouldn't matter if you consider the link to still be one length seperate from the slider.

      If you consider the sliding pair for hydrolics than consider cylinder and piston as two seperatw links. The answer will be same.

      In the Mechanics of Materials texts which I have access, that value is specific to the given cross section. Essentially it is attempting to come up with a property of the cross section which plays the same role as the polar moment of inertia for circular cross sections. I don't have access to the text referenced in the video, but the text that I have access to now points to an additional text for a deeper study. This text is "Theory of Elasticity" by S.P. Timoshenko and J.N. Goodier.

    Brilliant video, thank you! About the only thing that could have been done better is to have shown people how to create the (non-standard to SW) 1.25" pipe profile, so we could have followed along with your calculations. I work with 4130 tubing quite a bit in aerospace stuff, so I know how to create the weldment profiles--but I would still have to go look up the wall thickness for 1.25" pipe, for the schedule you used. This is a relatively trivial task though--but perhaps it would just have been nicer had you chosen a "built-in" pipe diameter, such as 1.0" or 1.5". That way we'd all be on the same page. Thanks again for creating the video. It was most educational.

      I created such a profile, and uploaded it here for people who want to follow along but don't quite know how to use the same pipe size. Here are the steps: 1) Download the file here: filebin.ca/6b2uRfMrunb8/1.25sch40.sldlfp 2) Put that file into the weldment profiles directory. On my Windows 10 machine with SW 2018, it goes here: C:\Program Files\SOLIDWORKS Corp\SOLIDWORKS\lang\english\weldment profiles\ansi inch\pipe Using this profile I was able to get the exact same results as Frankie showed in this video.

    Try to extend that line sketch for the rib all the way to the edge of the surface. Either, the top of the tube or to the edge of the bottom plate. It will give you an error. Why?
