A brief video of the few minutes leading up to, and including, totality. Full totality in real time. Totality happens at 3:47. Several photos follow at the end. Admittedly, not all my attempts at good footage turned out as desired, but I came away with great photos and an incredible memory. Enjoy.

Woodland Stag Lyre Build: Part 3

Had to be a bit more precise and delicate at this stage if I want it to sound good, too. Put together the soundboard, and attached it. Then had to plane and sand it down. Followed by marking out the string and pin placements. Little bit different music selection this time...I let my ADD get the better of me. Oh well. :)
Woodland Stag Lyre Build Part 2

The lyre build has now entered the chop and grind stage. I clearly have much to learn, but so far I'm pretty satisfied with my progress. But Mike...why the Viking battle music? Well...wrestling with this piece of Red Oak often feels like medieval warfare. Good reasons why oak is perhaps not the primary wood for luthiers. But still worth it. Next time, we'll get into the soundboard and pin reami...

      It is. That is why having the widest angle lens gives you the longest exposure time with the least movement. Using a tracker makes things easier, but at this time I don't have one, so this is the compromise approach.

    Terrible writing

    • @michaellyons5208
      @michaellyons5208 Рік тому

      I appreciate the feedback on Irving's original Nineteenth Century text. It's hard to say how it compared to contemporary pieces of the era. It is certainly a period piece of writing with quite a bit of vernacular. Many consider it a classic short story, but I can understand that it isn't everyone's cup of tea.

    • @Laocoon283
      @Laocoon283 Рік тому

      @@michaellyons5208 I'm often shocked at how overhyped some classic literature is. Specifically american literature seems to be the worst for it. Hemingway, The Great Gatsby, Edgar Allan Poe's poetry is great but almost all of his short stories are not great. All in all american literature is pretty thin pickens and that's why I think stuff like this gets bumped up to classic status.

      @michaellyons5208 Рік тому

      @@Laocoon283 I can't say I fully agree. I guess in part it depends on what merits one draws such a comparison. Many people consider American literature to be rather "podunk and redneck" in comparison to English or European literature. The question is...why is that? Did Irving intend a grand epic with Sleepy Hollow? Most likely not. It was written for popular readers as a fun story inclusive of local people and places. That it became the icon of short stories it is has more to do with the consumers than the quality of the writing, in many ways. In the same way, though, one can easily say that popular music today is all pretty much garbage because it lacks originality and depth. Is Picasso "worse" than Rembrandt? Or is he a product of his time and environment? I guess it really comes down to..."compared to what?"

    I remember one time when I watch the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. That was when I watch the Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad when I live in Calgary. I thought Sleepy Hollow is the myth, but I've learned it's really real. And I heard rumors that the Headless Horseman is a dangerous ghost creature from the ghost stories and I've learned the Headless Horseman is the Hessian Soldier who lost his head by the Cannonball. But I have a question, are Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman really real?

    • @michaellyons5208
      @michaellyons5208 Рік тому

      Washington Irving pulled local folklore of the time and combined it with fictional characters in a very real setting with which he was quite familiar. He is in fact buried there. Sleepy Hollow is a brief drive up the Hudson River from New York City. He (supposedly) based Ichabod on a schoolteacher he knew with a different name.

      You definitely need something with fully manual capabilities, a good digital camera option is the Canon T-Series. And the shortest length lens you can find like a 24 mm or less because that's going to give you the widest field and the longest possible exposure time. You can actually do it with the lens that comes with a Canon rebel but the smaller you can go the better. You can also look for used fisheye lenses that will fit or grab yourself an adapter for non-canon lenses

    I’ve been blessed to grow up in the beautiful state of Pennsylvania. My parents own about 50 acres in central Pa farmland and they have very little light pollution, although nothing like cherry springs. As a kid, we’d be swimming at night and get out of the pool and lay in the field in front of my parents and gaze upon the heavens, and it’s indescribable beauty. I’m so thankful as an adult to have had this very golden opportunity to see how small and insignificant we truly are in the grand scheme of things. I was 10 years old when comet hale-bopp passed by earth. Luckily my mother and father appreciate the beauty of our existence because they took me and my infant sister outside to watch it pass by. I’ll never, ever forget the night or what I saw, it was the most spectacular thing I’ve witnessed in my lifetime, outside of holding my children in my hands for the first time. The comet approached our house from the east and slowly streaked across the clear night sky, moving toward the northwest from roughly 45° looking off the horizon as I remember. It looked like a sparkler minus the sparks, with a tail that had a white-blue hue to it. It took about 20 seconds in all if I remember correctly, and I clearly remember seeing the tail of the comet slowly dying out in the distance as it sped off into space. To this day the image of that comet has been seared in my brain and at the time sparked my lifelong amateur curiosity in space and everything to do with it. I can’t tell you how many shooting stars I’ve seen in my lifetime, we’d sit by the fire pit and look at the sky and some nights there’d be so many, you would quit counting.
