Hey, everyone! Welcome to our Africa travel series! We're starting off in Cape Verde-our first country in Africa! (If we don't count Morocco). We’re super-excited to share our daily adventures as we explore the beautiful Santiago Island. From checking out local spots to accidentally getting lost on some crazy hikes, it's already been a wild ride.
"LOST in CAPE VERDE | The Most Underrated Travel Destination of 2024 - SANTIAGO ISLAND" is a tribute to the island that most travelers think is just a transfer point to SAL - the most touristy destination of Cape Verde.

Must-See Santjago Island Cape Verde:
Praia and Nearby Attractions
1. Mercado Municipal de Praia: This bustling market is open daily from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM and is a hub for fresh produce, seafood, and local crafts. Free to enter.
2. Rock of Praia and Prainha Beach: Both are outdoor attractions with no entrance fee. The Rock of Praia offers scenic views, while Prainha Beach is a lovely spot for relaxation and swimming.
3. Lighthouse Dona Maria Pia: Situated near Praia, the lighthouse is a historical landmark offering views of the coast. It's best to visit during daylight for clear views, though specific visiting hours are not widely posted. If you want to get up there, a 2 euro tip would do.
4. Quebra Canela Beach: A popular beach located near the city center, free for the public, known for its lively atmosphere and beachside restaurants. Free to visit.
Cidade Velha:
Cidade Velha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about 20-30 minutes from Praia. Entry to key attractions like the Fortaleza Real de São Filipe costs around 500 CVE (Cape Verdean Escudo), while the town itself is free to explore.
Tarrafal Region:
1. Tarrafal Beach: Known for its white sand and clear waters, entry is free. The area also offers diving and snorkeling opportunities.
2. Ponte Natural and Ponta de Salto: Natural landmarks with no entrance fees, ideal for hiking and photography.
3. Tarrafal Municipal Market: A smaller market than Praia’s, typically open mornings till early afternoon.
Serra Malagueta:
The national park offers hiking and panoramic views. Entry is , though guided hikes can be arranged for a fee. 250 CVE per person.
Ferry and Plane Routes:
-Ferry to Maio: The ferry takes about 2-3 hours, with fares starting around 2,000 CVE for a one-way ticket.
- Ferry to Fogo: This longer ferry journey takes around 5-7 hours, costing approximately 3,500-5,000 CVE.
- Flight to Sal: Takes about 45 minutes to an hour, with prices ranging from 8,000 to 15,000 CVE, depending on availability.
