How to decode Ambisonics Audio Files in Presonus Studio One?
Thank you for this. Is it possible to customise the array in this plug-in decoder in 5th 6th or seventh order Ambisonic or is id just con decode from Ambisonic to Dolby Atmos standard setups? I need this for 37 speaker setup. 10 screen speakers, 15 ceiling and 3 speakers in each arrays on the walls.
Great video. I work in Nuendo and it's indeed a very good DAW, especially for Dolby Atmos. I have a Rode NT-SF1 microphone. I haven't been able to use it for some time now because the Sound Field plugin has been discontinued for a few years and Nuendo no longer supports it, which is very strange because this microphone is still being sold. Thanks to your excellent AB Decoder plugin I was able to start using it again, many thanks!
I really love using Nuendo.
Thanks for this review,Now question, i have Da Vinci Resolve Studio the payed version, is there any solution to convert my Fairlight Atmos Mix to a consumer atmos codec ? The Fairlight module of Da Vinci is already Dolby Atmos Native with binaural render but the export format was mostly a broadcast one, an BWF/ADM that can be open in another DAW or Dolby codec like an MP4 file. I probably need a separated Dolby licence with some hardware for the consumer export, it was not realy design for Music but for Atmos on Cinema , Streaming service and Bluray release... And assign the BED and the Object output was totaly painfull, im happy than im not the only one to have, some head scratching with the way Da Vinci Manage that.
Although you provide a lot of detailed information in this video, it has some serious flaws. I know, and you clearly state that, this this is your personal opinion, but it is not clear that you mainly focus on two features that (in my opinion) are not very important to the majority of Dolby Atmos music mixes. First of all, the title implies that you compare Dolby Atmos implementation/use in various DAWs. However, the title should be "The BEST DAWS for Dolby Atmos for using three-dimensional objects or Ambisonics." That comparison is okay, but I would argue that the number of engineers mixing music who use Ambisonics files or need to pan surround files as objects is close to zero. BTW, all the DAWs that have an integrated Dolby Atmos Renderer use the code of the original Dolby Atmos Renderer licensed from Dolby. And in that code, "three-dimensional objects" is not a thing. It is an object routing workflow, mainly used in post-production or music mixes to route multi-channel outputs of a plug-in to an object instead of a bed. But in that case, the last thing you want to do is panning it around. I would argue that the most important aspect when mixing music in Dolby Atmos is the end user and the system they are listening to your mix. My guess is that it is 99% binaural listening and maybe 80-90% in the Apple Spatial Audio version of binaural. That is the main concern of every Atmos mixing engineer, and not if you can pan a multi-channel audio file as an Object. I think Logic Pro is the only DAW that allows you to monitor through the Apple Binaural Render to listen to your Atmos mix the way it will sound when listening later on Apple Music. And it allows you to listen with your personalized HRTF, similar to the Dolby Atmos Renderer. These are crucial components that should be part of the criteria when comparing DAWs for Dolby Atmos. And then there are other important features like coloring Objects and Beds in Pro Tools or the Grouping feature, all very important workflow components. Or even more important features like the Download & Trim settings. Do all the DAWs provide these original Dolby Atmos features? I wish you would compare those relevant features between the DAWs.
Thank you so very much for commanding my attention and heightening my awareness with your breadth and depth of experience and knowledge about this topic! Cheers!
THANK YOU SO MUCH
One issue with Reaper is that it currently does not have post fader inserts, which the Fiedler Audio DAC recommends. There are workarounds but they are just that. Hopefully Justin adds those sooner rather than later.
True! That's a feature still missing!
It’s strange to me that you didn’t include Sequoia or Pyramix in these reviews. I realize that they are ferociously expensive, especially Pyramix, but they are certainly leaders, especially in the mastering and classical world.
Dolby Atmos is such a scam! No ordinairy people will ever listen to it in the way its suppost to!
🤣 👌
Not really a scam but it has been a spectacular failure , it failed to generate even a little bit of interest from the general public ... atmos will end up like NFTs
Hi, I am confused, why is Ableton disqualified and Reaper is not? Reaper also does NOT do atmos natively. And Ableton works just fine with the Fiedler atmos plugins.
Ableton doesn't support wide tracks (Ie you cannot import quad, Surround, etc files), which is the point of this video. Panning a stereo source in an atmos mix is all you can do. Let me know if I missed something 😊
@@AudioBrewers ah ok, I didn't understand that, thanks for clarifying.
Nice Video and I can hear clearly the surround effect, but have a question. How did you get the adm mix to a youtube video? or video in general? when I export the adm mix, I supposed I need a special player to play it.
I didn't, I was using the atmos renderer to down mix to 2.0 and simply using OBS to record the stereo stream from my soundcard, I never exported an adm
@@AudioBrewers can you make a video about that ? It would help many people
Good idea! so to be precise, a video explaining how to bring an ADM down to stereo? or how to RECORD a stereo stream from an atmos session?
@@AudioBrewers i have cubase 14 and play in a small music band i also own a zoom camera with which we record our performances. but afterwards i want to make a nice mix of it and not just put the recorded stereo of the camera under it. so i have the various instrument tracks separate and want to give them a surround feeling together with the video images. can this be done in one movement in cubase? or how would you approach this? can you explain that in a video? to answer your question: how to record a stereo of an atmos session and put it under a video.
Great overview and a good crash course for comparing workflow in different DAW's. I'm so happy I'm a Nuendo user!
Great review, Alejandro! 👏 Only thing I was missing when you were talking about the clumsy DR UI... was some hilarious meme references! 😂 Otherwise, solid info as always. Oh, and I have to say-Reaper is absolutely perfect for experimenting with Ambisonics! 🎶🔊 I'm pretty sure that one day, those Dolby folks realize they need to hook up Reaper with free Atmos integration-because it’ll make their whole ecosystem that much stronger. 😎 Anyway, enjoy your 2025!
Fantastic video. About the Native Dolby support in Reaper, in a podcast from IDDQD sound, the creator/main Reaper dev mentioned that Reaper will most like never get support for native Dolby support due to licensing and business deals etc. and possibility of raising the price, but he said, they'll add every possible necessary features that'd let you do Atmos in Reaper unofficially overtime.
Still my favourite daw though 😍
@@AudioBrewers Mine as well.
brilliant explained!!!
Thank you! 😀
As you noticed, Davinci Resolve can't adapt an Ambisonics input into a Dolby Surround/Atmos bus/output. You need the output Bus to be Ambisonics too and then you'll see the Ambisonics spherical panner on the Ambisonics tracks. imo the Ambisonics is still work in progress as various parts of it seem broken, such as the panners have a visualiser, but they don't work.
So the only thing I didn't try was the solution, 😂
@@AudioBrewers I thought you were being very restrained and not marketing it haha!
@@SamHocking Hahaha trust me I tried, too difficult still hahaha
@@AudioBrewers Just getting DRs built in Atmos to work the first time is a full days hard work + research I found. The whole blurring of tracks, busses, outputs and the patchbay seems messy to me. ie why would you ever want to manually connect each and every object up to a track manually is a heavy workflow.
Thank you so much for your incredible work and plugins. Happy Hollydays
Thank you for watching, happy holidays!
Excellent work as always. Thank you so much and Happy New Year!!!
Thank you!
Good work!
Thank you!
Thank you for putting this together Alejandro!
Thank you!
I may have missed this, but are theses features available in both versions or only Studio? Thanks for your information.
Only studio
Impressive demonstration. Will buy this.
I’m intrigued as I use FOA a lot for acoustic music recording. How does converting to higher order anbisonics provide more spatial resolution? Is it really any better than using FOA if your source is a tetrahedral (FOA) mic?
IMHO the difference is HUGE if you aim to decode to a destination larger than stereo, if you want to decode to stereo, then the difference is not that big (i'd say not really worth it unless you want to really isolate something)... but if your intention is to decode to Atmos or custom multi-speaker arrays, the difference is night and day. Also, the newest version of the Upscaler goes all the way to 7OA!
BTW I recommend you watch the "update" video of the Upscaler ua-cam.com/video/tw3TwuAzk_o/v-deo.html
@@AudioBrewers thank you so much - that’s really helpful. This morning I tried some experiments, upscaling some of my first-order ambisonic recordings, and you are totally right! It does work incredibly well (yes, as you say, there is a diminishing return to upscaling too much for just stereo output - 7th order takes a long time to process). But even upscaling to 3OA I can tell the difference when decoded into binaural, particularly in a complex mix. Comparing first order and upscaled recordings, listening in binaural, the first order recordings have an audibly coarser level of spatial resolution. I can also see the greater accuracy of upscaled FOA would be incredibly useful for those times where I create extra virtual directional microphones to highlight a particular instrument if something isn’t quite prominent enough. I tend to do this quite a bit where I haven’t been able to position the microphone properly - usually I’m recording performing groups I am part of, so obviously it’s a little bit difficult sometimes to position the microphone totally accurately because I can’t monitor at the same time as perform! Thank you for your reply, your inspiration and your excellent videos. It also shows how useful ambisonic recording is to be able to do experiments after recording!
@@MarkHarmer Always a pleasure to know someone finds our videos useful! :)
With the new update in davinci there is no need for external plugins.
That depends on your needs.
This is impressive, even over headphones in binaural. I'm going to give this a try in my studio shortly. I sent you an email a couple of hours ago too Alejandro. You've got my attention with your ambisonic tools. 😎
Flip the bottom ?
🤣
got a total newbie question. if i had a self made ambisonic mic like the "ambi-alice", recording using a zoom f6, so it'd be 4 separate wav files. is ab Encoder all i need to turn that into an ambisonic file?
So - if you have an AMBISONIC mic, you don't need an encoder, you need a TRANSCODER (such as 'ab Transcoder'. An Ambisonic mic records in what we call A-Format, to be able to decode the signal, you need a B-Format signal, 'ab Transcoder' converts that signal for you. Additionally, if you with to increase the resolution of your signal, you can also add 'ab Imager Upscaler' to upscale your signal to a higher order (if your DAW supports it). So, to summarise, Ambi-alice -> 'ab Transcoder' -> 'ab Imager Upscaler' -> 'ab Decoder HOA' -> Your speakers
And even after 2 years, this video is still so useful. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Glad to know you find it useful!
@@AudioBrewers The only problem I have is that in Cubase Pro it is not possible to use the Send in on output channel. So I can not send the renderer output to the rotator group.
Well. then send to a group and from that group send. to both the output and a rotator group, I had noticed cubase didn't have send from output. but it's not a biggie
@@AudioBrewers Yes, sometimes it is too easy that you overlock it.. Thanks for the quick reply
Do you have a video showing how to track different angles in the 3D object during playback? Example: from a stereo track or a mono track of bird chirping, to the chirping starting above head then moving to left ear then moving below then moving to right ear
If you are taking about Ambisonics, check our ab Encoder videos for exactly that!
Which wind blimp is compatible with that mic?

Thank you Alejandro. This sounds again amazing. You are making ambisonics an experience ❤ I was thinking you could do a demo with an envelope Follower. I always love to hear how a mono signal unfolds into ambisonics this way. I think it could do the same for some undecided listeners.

Not at the moment
I am not seeing the AB encoder in my Davinci 19 Studio. I just updated it today. Any ideas where it might be hiding?
what type of track? Is it Ambisonics?
@@AudioBrewers Yes, it is from a Zoom H3VR (ambiX files I think) so it is a 4 channel recording. I have changed the track attributes to 5th order ambisonics

Studio One v6.5+ and above does support 3-dimensional objects for Dolby up to 9.1.6, as Presonus says so right on the product's web page. Just saying 🤷♀ Anyways, great video content, thumbs up. Except for the few errors hehe 😁
Just checked - as of today, Studio One 6.6 still DOES NOT support three-dimensional OBJECTS (objects aren't beds, nor tracks), i.e. you CANNOT convert a 9.1.6 track to an object, only mono or stereo :) Thanks for the comment, except for the misunderstanding :)
@@AudioBrewers Whoa, I just went back to the website section since several months ago, and it clearly said it supported 3-dimensional objects. And now the entire section of the page is gone. Maybe they are working on it and someone spilled the beans too early ? Maybe they will release it in v7

Great tutorial, as always! 🔥 Can I pan/move audio of different wireless lavs also with 3D360 videos with the new ai audio panner of Resolves Beta? Or is Resolve not 360 aware and screw the audio positioning up? Other but kinda similar use case: H3VR and Pro 2 mounted on backpack. Pro 2 footage after stabilization completely different direction than spatial recording. Since I move with the backpack, turn around etc. it can't be done just with 1 simple alignment of the audio. Hoped it is possible to automate this process e.g. with that new feature or maybe some different plugin?
Good question, I am not a video guy so no idea about the 360 awareness, unfortunately.

Im planning to create an 7.1.4 aux track and load there the encoder so any signal coming in will be encoded to ambisonics and then load one of your reverbs? you know to simply use the send from the objects to the reverb... im mixing atmos but im really new into all these ambisonics..... i already bought the ab reverb and decoder suite but im just realizing that i need the encoder also....
Yes, if you have a source of Audio you want to pan into an ambisonics SoundField you could either insert the encoder in the track to Encode it for example το 3rd order and then send that to a 3rd order aux (or decode the track itself) OR send your audio to a 7.1.2 aux and then add the encoder in the aux from 7.1.2 to ambisonics - either will work.
