Very confused…. Is Scrivener really worth it…..
This windows…. How do you backup on a PC
Wonderful… i finally found someone that speaks about APA style. But how do I convert since I have started already…… help help help….
Great… but i am new to any form of Scrivener and i am currently reviewing the new version 3. But I am still lost because most of the videos that I have been researching are all showing how to use the older versions and most of the people demonstrating it act like everyone is familiar. What I need to know do i find a video explaining the new version and by someone is not a writer of a fiction novel. Some of us just want to write their book which is not fiction
How do you get the corkboard background?
To get the corkboard background, go to Settings. From the toolbar choose Appearance. Then in the left sidebar, choose Corkboard. Once the corkboard options appear, choose the Colors tab. At the top there is an option for Corkboard background. One of the options in the dropdown is for Corkboard Texture.
Extremely concise. Very rare on UA-cam. Thank you.
You are a life saver 💗. After clicking alt + f4, i mistakenly deleted all the text 😭 thank god auto back up was on.
Very helpful video--thank you!
Thank you so much for helping me retrieve the file I have been working on. You made the path to opening it so easy for me. Wow. You are so very good at this. Thanks again.
It doesn't work with Word 2016 :(((( My Scrivener 3 does not export Chapter, Section, Scene and divisions displays; Word sees the whole document compiled and exported (everything) as plain text without subdivisions.
This is awesome. Very easy to understand. Just wish the app was available in mobile app
Very helpful
Excellent information and detail. I like how you showed us step by step and made me learn where to find things in the preferences folder. I would love a video on all the preference options to see if there are some I am not utilizing. Thanks again!
I could have just opened a template and clicked around. It would be better if you had actually done something.
this got me to get my backups in order and to serve me if ever the need; thanks... :)
thank you this was helpful... :)
Thank you for this video. It certainly cleared up some questions I had about where the projects were being saved and where the back-ups ought to go.
I'm trying to figure out how to get my projects from Scrivener old to Scrivener 3. Every time I open a project in Scrivener 3, my body-text is gone. My work is gone! I have many projects, my largest is over 350k words. I really don't want to manually move everything over. Has anyone figured this out yet? It's been years.
Sorry, I haven’t heard of this happening before. You can check the Literature and Latte forums for Scrivener for Windows forum.literatureandlatte.com/c/scrivener/scrivener-for-windows/13 to see if anyone else has reported this issue. There are also Scrivener Facebook groups that you might find an answer in. But you might end up needing to contact Support. The support options are listed on this page: www.literatureandlatte.com/learn-and-support. Good luck!
I appreciate the tutorial!About to try it out...
Finally, thanks to your video, I was able to convert my manuscript into Word document! Thank you!
You're welcome! I'm so glad you found this helpful.
I have scrivener on my Mac and also in my iPhone but it is not clear how I can sync between them. I have some documents on the Mac and different ones on the iPhone. But I would like to have something like Notes in which whatever I write on Notes is synced automatically right away on all my Apple devices. I know I have to use Dropbox but I can’t understand how to get the same files on Mac and iPhone.
You need to put all the Scrivener projects you want to share across devices into one folder in Dropbox, then you can set up sync between your iPhone and your Mac. It’s not as quick a sync as with Notes, though. And it doesn't happen automatically upon making a change. If you’re working on your iPhone, then you have to sync the file from the iPhone version of Scrivener to Dropbox. Then you need to sync from Dropbox to the Mac version of Scrivener. Here’s a How To video from the makers of Scrivener. www.literatureandlatte.com/learn-and-support/video-tutorials/scrivener-for-ios-sync-demonstration?os=iOS
Curious if anyone has upgraded to Windows 11. If so, negative effects on Scrivener. I have been holding off on the change from Windows 10 to 11 because of Scrivener.
Hi Samuel, I'm not aware of any issues with Scrivener and Windows 11. Scrivener 3 was released as being Windows 11 ready. You can always search the Literature and Latte forum for Scrivener for Windows if you have specific issues you're worried about. forum.literatureandlatte.com/c/scrivener/scrivener-for-windows/13
Is there more with the poetry template, or is it basically like a word doc and it's no point in my purchasing if what I want to do is a poetry compilation?
If all you're interested in is the poetry format, then Scrivener might not be worth it. Scrivener does have a free trial, if you want to see what else it can do.
Thank you so much for this! My computer was damaged, and I was lucky enough to be able to recover parts of the hard drive, but...when I opened the Scrivener back up files and they were empty! Didn't realize I had to "Extract all" first. Phew.
thank u so much ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
What order are you supposed to watch these in??? This one is part 2. Part 2 of what?? Nothing is mentioned in the titles of which part is which!!!
I'm so sorry about the confusion! I've added numbers to the titles for this series and also added the numbered list of all videos in the series to each description.
@@VanessaKier Thanks!!!
Vanessa, thank you for this video. Very helpful!
Can Scrivener be synced or backed up using Google Drive?
You can save your compressed zip backup file to Google Drive. However, the makers of Scrivener warn against synching live projects through Google Drive. You can learn more here: scrivener.tenderapp.com/help/kb/cloud-syncing/using-scrivener-with-cloud-sync-services
@@VanessaKier thank you!
Thanks so much! I couldn't find anything on moving my old scrivener files over when I got a new computer, but this worked perfectly.
Click-click-click -- better and more denture fastener required.
I can't get it to do what I want, either. I've been at this for a week. All I want is to export my plan, if possible in numbered paragraphs with the notes I need. Nothing I've tried does that. I don't want to write my novel in Scrivener, I want to plan it, using the corkboard, and then export the finished plan in .docx format (I'd settle for Excel). I don't use Word, and the word processor I use (Atlantis Word Processor) has all the features I want - including Autocorrect, which Scrivener doesn't have. It only seems to have autocomplete.
Hi Lynne. Scrivener’s compile feature isn’t set up to apply formatting to individual paragraphs within a document. If it’s visible in the binder, then Scrivener can assign a number to it. Text in the Editor window or the Inspector’s Synopsis don’t get assigned numbers. Even if you tell Scrivener to include the Synopsis, Notes, or Text in the compile, only the title level gets the number. Sorry. As for autocorrect, Scrivener does have this. It’s under Preferences/Corrections (Mac) or Tools/Options/Corrections (Win v1) or File/Options/Corrections/ and then look in both the Corrections and Spelling sections for the preferences you want (Win v3).
@@VanessaKier I don't care what the finished document looks like, as long as it's legible. And I really don't know why it's not printing out the synopsis. I honestly don't understand what you're saying. If I type it in, shouldn't it be able to print or export it? If it can't, what's the point of having it? And as a follow-up, how can I do it? Since I don't like Scrivener's word processor, I thought I'd use it to plan. But it doesn't seem to be possible. The compile feature is so complicated, when it doesn't need to be. It's as if the Scrivener people have never heard of WYSIWYG. I can't find autocorrect, only autotext in the place you suggested. If it's the "edit substitutions" feature, it's no use tucked away where it is. It needs to be in the toolbar to be any use. Most writers use autocorrect to substitute names, places etc for ease of typing and it's important to have it easily available. I just can't with this program any more. Too complicated, too unintuitive. It's like somebody said, "Let's make something as different to Word as we possibly can." I was a Photoshop user, but when it went to a subscription model, I moved to Gimp, and then PaintShopPro. None of these programs try to reinvent the wheel. There are differences, to be sure, but if you learn one of them, you can pick up another fairly easily. There are even guides on how to transition from one to another. How about one of those for Scrivener?
@@LynneConnolly Hi Lynne. I hear you. Compile can be incredibly frustrating. At this point, there’s nothing more I can do to help you within these UA-cam comments. If you’d be interested in a paid coaching session, where you can share your screen so I can see exactly what you’re doing, please let me know.
I have been stumped for hours trying to get my short story which I stupidly imported into scrivner to organize and add to it and all I want to do now is export it back to a plain old word file just like it was. But, no. I guess I will use notecards to plan and write in word because this has been a ridiculous waste of time. I could honestly have rewritten the whole thing in the time ive wasted. I hope you were able to solve your problem!
@@nightlady2001 It's incredibly frustrating. It's like stubborness, that Scrivener uses entirely different conventions to any other program. Other, similar programs, like Dabble, are at least usable out of the box. Anyway, I've found out how to outline in Scrivener, and then get that out of the program without spending hours copying and pasting, so that will do for me. I'm not using it for writing the project. I wish there was a straightforward corkboard program that I could use. You know, I switch them around, get the plot right and then save it in a nice, neat, numbered document. I learned Photoshop a long while ago, when I was doing graphics. It was hard, and it took a while. But it was totally worth it. Over the years I moved to Gimp, and then to PaintShopPro. They all work on the same principles, use the same way of working, so when you've learned one, you can use them all.
Click bait don't do it they want you to join a course and pay them $47 don't do it there's too many people out there with free videos you do not need to pay somebody as a matter of fact scrivener themselves have free UA-cam videos to watch
Hi, i was wondering. I am using an iPad Air 2, iPadOS 14.7.1 And i don’t see the whole toolbar at the top or how to get it. Do you know off hand?
The iOS versions of Scrivener don’t have the same type of full toolbar as the Mac OS version. However, if you’re looking for the editing/formatting toolbar, that appears in iOS when you tap inside a document.
@@VanessaKier I actually found it. The only way I can describe it is that when using an attachable keyboard with the iPad, the second tool bar set from the bottom. If I press and hold any of those, the extended capabilities I’m looking for come up I’m using scrivener for resumes today. What I cannot figure out is how to remove page numbers from the bottom of my resume . Any ideas?
@@EarTipper Page numbers are set from within the Compile feature. If you’re on your iPad, go into Compile. Look for the Footer box and remove the <$p> code. That will get rid of the page numbers.
@@VanessaKier Bless you! ❤️🔥
Thank you
If anyone is looking for the part where she goes over the differences between the old version and the new one, go directly to minute 4:30.
Thank you so so much! I thought I'd lost all my work when Word wouldn't open them properly. Scrivener's such a good tool but really overwhelming sometimes.
Thank you :)
Very nice
I haven't seen Scapple used this well before. How do you manage to do the maps and lay nodes on top of background nodes, representing the jungle etc? Please make a video about this.
I’m glad you found the video helpful. To get a note on top of a box in Scapple, go under Notes. Choose New Background Shape. You can then drag notes onto that shape. In the Inspector, you can also change the border and fill color of the background shape. That’s a good idea about doing a video. I’ve added this to my future videos list.
@@VanessaKier Thanks for the information.
This was very helpful thanks. I'm wondering about upgrading to Scrivener 3 (Windows) but I have doubts. How do I download the trial while keeping Scrivener 1 on my laptop?
Scrivener 3 installs as Scrivener3 into a different directory. It won't override Scrivener 1.
@@VanessaKier Thanks. I just might try it, but I like the version I have. The new one doesn't seem to add anything that I really want.
Is there a way of getting rid of the flat appearance of Scrivener 3?
No. Sorry. I don't know of any way to change the flat appearance.
I just bought Scrivener 3 for Windows (I am a total Scrivener newbie) and I wonder why your Scrivener 3 interface looks so different from mine. For instance, my top toolbar does not contain "Tools" submenu at all, and the submenus are different too.
I think you're looking at the point in this video where I show the old version of Scrivener as a way to compare it to the new version. To see the new version, you need to go forward to minute 5:15.
@@VanessaKier Thank you for the answer. I see it now. It is just all so confusing with almost all videos available on UA-cam being from older versions. I guess I will have to wait some time for more Scrivener 3 for Windows videos to be posted.
@@watchdogCZ The great thing about Scrivener 3 for Windows is that now it's essentially the same as the Mac version. So you should be able to follow along without problem any video for Scrivener 3 for Mac, as long as the video isn't simply demonstrating the differences between the old Mac version and the new Mac version.
Thank you. I had version 1 opened and version 3 was able to generate a coupon key to use for buying it free.
Thank you!
Amazing video. List of videos on how writers use Scrivener, but no useful videos on how to use Scrivener’s features. Great job.
Thanks! So glad you found it useful.
Totally useless video!
Can you change which Scrivener template is part way through? What I mean is: if I use the fiction template and later decide my book should have parts can I change the manuscript to fiction with parts format without having to do everything manually? Thanks for the video. Much clearer than the intro tutorial on their website, if you ask me.
Sorry, the templates are only for setting up the project at the start. You can’t apply a new one once you’ve started a project. You could start a new project with the novel with parts template, then drag and drop/copy and paste your current items into the new format. But, depending on how long your current project is, it’s probably not worth it to start a new project. The novel with parts template has only two parts folders already set up. One parts folder has two chapters as subfolders. The other parts folder has only one chapter. It’s probably faster to add a new folder to your current project, name it parts, then drag the associated chapters/scenes inside and repeat as often as necessary.
