    I think it would have been better to film and narrate the making of the tower. The method you are using to describe the dimensions of the tower is not interesting, even though I am interested in how to make it. I may not make it, but I would enjoy watching it be made.

    I love the "easy diy build/simple tools only"videos from gen-x dudes that probably drive a brand new pickup with more $ hanging in their clamp collection storage alone than most people searching for simple build content do in power tools and definitely don't have windows in their garage. Good build, but another drop in the bucket for misleading clickbait adverting simple build diy channels from people who can't ever remember using a couple of squares and a second hand circular saw in lieu of a table saw and track saw to make cuts.

    • @ricksaw
      @ricksaw 3 місяці тому

      Those are the worst. But you bring up a good point. If you could only have one saw, what would it be? Track saw, table saw, circular saw?

  • @boboatner9021
    @boboatner9021 3 місяці тому

    This is really nice because it’s very lightweight, yet strong enough to do the job. Also, using thinner plywood means that it cost less to build. I wonder if it’s actually easier to build than using a router in thicker material. I also wonder if it’s quicker to build than using a router in thicker material. I will have a better idea somewhat soon since I plan to route dados in a shelf unit that I’m already using. It will serve the same purpose as this cabinet section serves.

    • @ricksaw
      @ricksaw 3 місяці тому

      It was easier, I've used routers and dado blades to do the same. Router created so much dust and without the proper jig one slip, and the groove isn't straight. With a dado blade, I'd need a bigger cross cut setup or a radial arm saw. This kept it simple. Could always modify it too 1/2" base or 7/16" base + 1/4" slats for a less flimsy bottom and top. Thanks for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

    I’m looking at building something similar, how did this workout? Was considering using biscuits, is there an advantage to dowels?

    • @ricksaw
      @ricksaw 3 місяці тому

      Worked out very well, very hard to see the seam. The dowels had an advantage of adding stability to the joint. In total, there were 3 of these to make a full beam, and it was assembled on site. The dowels also allowed room for the pocket holes to bring it together. I'd also recommend adding a support overlapping the joint for me. I assembled the final beam on-site, so I needed the added strength during transport.

    Most track saws have an arbor size of 20mm. You cannot use the diamond knock out to safely make the blade fit - this is for saws with a diamond arbor. You need to buy a track saw blade made for the 20mm arbor.

    I could see your approach working well if plywood was used for the walls in a shop, rather than drywall. I agree with you that the shape of some items will consume a lot of French cleat real estate. The studs in a shop's walls will likely either be 16" on center or 24" on center. I have a pole barn that I use for a shop, where the 6x6 posts are spaced 8 feet on center (if I remember correctly). After the pole barn was built by the contractor (almost 20 years ago), I filled in the space between those 6x6 posts with 2x4s on 24" centers, and covered most of the walls with drywall (some of the walls still have bare studs showing). The advantage of French cleats with such walls is the ability to bridge the gaps between the 16" or 24" on center studs with a continuous board that provides continuous securing points between the studs (drywall wall anchors might work in some situations, until you need to hang heavy portable power tools on the wall). In the last few months I have been building out a French cleat wall. I used 3/4" solid red oak for my French cleats, so there was no plywood backing board required behind the French cleats. I am using black walnut for the tool holders because I bought a fair amount of that wood at auctions 15 to 20 years ago, and used very little of it in projects since that time.

    Another option for a modular system is one done by April wilkerson it requires plywood wall panels but no french cleat slats. You still have to make holders. And the design makes them alot more stable on the wall.

      Great community putting in work to develop new methods. I'd like to see more efficient use of materials dedicating an entire sheet of 3/4 to the wall just for holding tools. We can do better! Great decision on moving your bench but I wouldn’t call it a mistake every new workshop I’ve been in has taken around a few months or even a year to get a flow going that suits me.Also have you seen the dust collection conversion to get better efficiency from the system your using I have the same one it’s a different name but still same one I can’t think of the channel but easy to find it eliminates the plastic bag too and gives you better suction I noticed the difference worth a look I think. Great idea. How many hours did you have on the build and then install? Out of pocket costs total? Thanks.

      16 hours on the build and install. $200 in materials, and the client supplied the paint.

    I would replace your vacuum to stihl 33 vacuum cleaner super powerful and quit. I love it so much that I bought three of them.

      I sure do need a quiet vacuum. These shop vacs are terribly loud!

    Musk may have eye for opportunity and smart people but he didn’t o any of things that make Tesla a success. And frankly you don’t need to stand in his shoulders. This build is fabulous on its own.

    Love this idea. Do you know how much plywood you saved using this method vs the original?

      I'll try to estimate this on the follow-up video. Already started filming!

    Thanks for sharing. I made a smart bench using my router and Ron Paulk's plans but I like your technique better. Waiting for the follow-up video. Good job.
