Build strength in your serratus anterior and bulletproof your shoulders or use this as a remedial exercise to treat shoulder pain. What about the navel u don’t do a massage on it?
Massage directly on the navel can be irritating, although it is safe to do so. I would recommend only making contact with it in passing and not to directly apply too much pressure or prolonged contact to it.

That internal/external rotation nomenclature always confuses me. I think of the foot of the foot movement rather than the hip movement.
It can be a confusing thing in the prone position and often takes people a while to get their head around which direction is which. That said, it is important to remember what the hip is doing as just following the lower leg/foot movement can be misleading at times. Either way, whichever way you use to remember is fine - as long as it's correct! :)

Very helpful technique, my only issue is not being able to deliver constant pressure after doing 5 of these a day, my hands get super achy
This is such a good point... I have the same issue and I've found it really helpful to practice using different body parts other than thumbs: wrist, forearm, elbow, knuckles... Also using different modalities such as dry cupping, tooling and dry needling can be helpful. Take care of your thumbs!!
