Backpacking the Sandstone Trial - UK
A short video of the delightful Sandstone Trail from Frodsham in Cheshire to Whitchurch in Shropshire. It is about 35 miles and we had a couple of overnight camps. It took 3 days - including the travel to each end. We walked this in June 2023.

Bikepacking the Cantii Way in Kent, UK (Surly Troll)
Переглядів 1,3 тис.2 роки тому
You can download the GPX file for this route at: www.cyclinguk.org/cantii-way This was the first significant ride I did on a Surly Troll that I had built in the spring before from a new frame and parts from an older bike. Like a lot of people, I rind myself being drawn to more gravel/off road routes to avoid the cars. The ride is a circular 234km, and had been released the year before by Cyclin...

The bike were carried in soft bags and checked in as regular luggage. Accommodation was: 2 nights in hotels (Pombal & Lagos) 2 nights in an apartment (Lisbon) 2 wild camps The rest in commercial camp sites The Bromptons worked really well - apart from so...

Cycle Touring & Camping with a Dog - East Sussex & Kent (UK) - Surly Troll & Big Dummy
Переглядів 1,5 тис.3 роки тому
A cycle trip around the East Sussex and Kent coast in the UK on our Surly bikes with Lucy the dog. We did not get nearly as far as we had intended, it was quite late in the season and the winds were incessant. The trip was cut short as some storms were due bring a few days of rain so we bailed out. However, while the sun was out, the light and coastal location made filming fun.
Brompton Touring & Camping with a Dog and Trailer - Suffolk Coast
Переглядів 31 тис.3 роки тому
This a trip on our Brompton folding bikes, with Lucy the dog in the trailer along the Suffolk Coast for a long week end. The route was roughly: Ipswich - Felixstowe - Aldeburgh - Southwold - Lowestoft. At Lowestoft (Oulton Broad Station), we packed everything up and carried it all onto the train as luggage - no bike reservation required! The trailer is a Radical Designs Chubby - designed for Br...
Backpacking the Gritstone Trail
Переглядів 6043 роки тому
Backpacking the Gritstone Trail over 3 days with our dog. This was our first backpacking outing since lockdown, so our fitness was way under par. However it was a nice start for the year. When we set off from home, at the last minute we decided to walk to the train station. This was a mistake as it added too many miles to the overall trip. So, as a last minute decision at Bowstones, we missed L...

Cycle Touring & Wild Camping with a Dog - Scottish Borders and Northumbria - Surly Troll & Big Dummy
Переглядів 5 тис.4 роки тому
A Cycle touring trip to the Scottish Borders and Northumbria in the UK of just over a week with our dog, Lucy. The initial plan was a figure of eight. Start/finish at Berwick-Upon-Tweed, up to North Berwick inland and then follow the coast south to Alnwick (if not further) and then inland again back to Berwick. In reality, the Northumbrian coast, beautiful as it was, was just too busy. So we he...
King Alfred's Way - 7 Days on a MTB. Solo and Wild Camping

A whistle stop view of my trip around my complete circuit of the King Alfred’s Way 220 mile route. I did this in September 2020, about 3 weeks after the trail was opened. I had a week, so took 7 days - a more relaxed pace than the norm. Half day rest at Reading. The only route alteration is the spur to include Stonehenge. This route really is excellent, especially if you have never been to the ...
Cycle touring and wild camping with a dog in Dumfries - Scotland, on a Surly Big Dummy & Surly Troll
Переглядів 3 тис.4 роки тому
A cycle route over 5 days. Start/finish in Carlisle, passing Gretna, following the Solway Firth then turning up the River Nith to Dumfries. Then inland and looping round to Lockerbie to Longtown and back to Carlisle. We tend to take tracks and bridleways where possible so Lucy can get off the bike and walk. Wild camping all the way.
Cycle Touring With a Dog & Wild Camping - Lincolnshire UK - On A Surly Big Dummy & Surly Troll

For years we have wanted to take our dog cycle touring with us. This is our solution. The bikes were built for a long trip around Scotland, but this was cancelled due to Covid, So this is our first proper trip out on them. I modified the Big Dummy to carry the quick release dog carrier and 4 small rear cycle panniers. Lucy the dog still needs plenty of exercise, so the route takes in plenty of ...

Somewhere we have never explored before although we had been meaning to for years. Start from Highgate Road in Hayfield. From Brown Knoll it is an easy hop to Edale Cross. Don't expect to see many people up Roych Clough. Noodle the dog it quite chilled until she see the drone. She hates it!

Gran Canaria - Backpacking and camping the GR131 Hiking Trail (Until the Calima Sandstorm Descended)
Great video and set up. I’m doing it and wild camping along the way also. Hope not left it too late as doing this week ( last week of October 24) and not a mud fest
Good luck. It was quite late when I did it - maybe a few weeks earlier. But it was bone dry and I was one of the first to do it, so little wear on thd track. Regardless, you should have a great time. It is one if my favourite rides. Would do it again.
Really good. How did you pack bikes for flying please?
Nice video BUT the music was very annoying and i think this partly will effect your potential subscriber list ! So more narrating live and less music IMO
Hi, You are not alone in preferring dialogue to music. The only answer I can give is that I make the videos primarily how I like them as a momento. I do not monetise them or chase a huge subscriber count, i simply enjoy making them. I really only share them because the subject is a bit 'niche' and to help others looking for ideas or to do similar. Glad you enjoyed the video, if in only in part.
@@krull57 Ok mate i understand...... Yes that makes sense. ! all the best and safe trip
Loved that. Would love to know what you were packing in those huge rear bags.
Thanks. Glad you liked it. Camping gear, cooking gear, tools spares, kitchen sink etc. Too much really. Have since got a smaller bag and trimmed it down.
Shame the music is so loud.
👍
Looking to do this by myself and will be first touring I’ve done. No map just road signs and natural navigation. Shouldn’t get too lost as I’ve lived in Kent for 30 yrs. Never lost, just exploring. Thinking of just a bivvy and no pressure on myself. Thanks for the video.
Thanks. You should be fine with a bivvy. Loads of out the way wild camping spots. Hope it goes well for you.
@@krull57 Thank you.
Muy bueno❤

Dear @krull57, can I assume you had your Cyclone Chubby shipped to the UK? If so, could you tell me if you had to pay any customs duty with the standard 15 € shipping from Radical Design? Best wishes, Oliver
Hi. We bought it before brexit. Since, Radical design refund you the 21% Dutch vat on large orders and UK customs charge you uk vat (not sure about import duty) Quite frankly it is all a right mess. I recently made a £130 order and got a customs surcharge of £54. Should be better for a larger order. They have the procedure on their website. A wonderful brexit benefit. It was do easy before. Good luck
Hello, nice video and cool set-up.. wonder if you would share your set-up .e.g. panniers, racks, mounts, bike bags used etc..etc.. I am about to drop some cash on a second-hand one and would like to kit it up like you have (+ drop bars)
Hi . Thanks. Racks are all from Airnimal, specific to the bike. Panniers and bar bag are all Ortleib. Small rear panniers and small bar bag. TBH, I have now swapped the forks to suspension type and use Vaude bike packing kit so that it can used as a transportable gravel bike.
Que feliz va el perrito❤❤ Yo también tengo brompton y llevo a mi perra delante! Podéis decirme que modelo de remolque usáis? Un saludo desde Barcelona
are your pedals quick release? if so, which ones?
Hi. They are Wellgo pedals. I have both spd and rat trap type with a common mount, so I can easily swap them about.
Lovely video. Great soundtrack. Thank you. I am doing this first week of May 2024. Possibly solo.
Hiya, What was the red bag on the rack, looks like a rucksack? What did you do with the suitcase for the brompton when you travelled? Thanks
Hi, the red bag is a 60L Decathlon rucksack. The bromptons travel in soft bags that are padded with clothes and cardboard. The bags roll up to about 1L and the cardboard is thrown away.
Good watch.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
How do you put it on a bicycle
Aural Nights-musicby ADEN !
Nice video, thank you. What camera did you use and how to make selfie stick invisible? Cycling Finn
Hi thanks for watching. It is actually a 360 camera (Insta 360 x1). It films everything and you select the view/zoom etc. post edit. It also deletes automatically the selfie stick.
Hi John. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your kind comments. We lost Lucy quite suddenly, but fortunately, young Gheorghe loves a long walk and has taken well to backpacking. 🐕.
I enjoyed your little ranble with your new lovely Dawgie, and enjoyed the music too. Sorry to hear of Lucy but she will always be with you I’m sure.
Which month did you go?
Hi, Mid September to early October.
@@krull57 I will be doing a long cycle starting the beginning of October, north to south. How was the weather like in October for you?
@user-bz6nt2ez5q It was hot but we were quite south by then.
@@krull57 thank you 😊🙏
I use to ride my cats with me on my bike. I would transport them in my single wheel bike trailer. They really enjoyed getting out and riding with me and they were great company to have come along.
Truly is Brompton holds no boundaries..... Amen?
Indeed, 👍

I have a 2009 Joey, with Shimano Nexus 8 speed enclosed hub gear, front disc brake, rear rack and Ortlieb quick detach panniers, sks mudguards, shimano spd pedals, Brookes Flyer (sprung saddle). It works well as an alternative to my Brompton, and the Brookes sprung saddle has made the bike much more comfortable, with less jarring ride. Tyres are Schwalbe Kojak 1.50x24, pumped up to max 85psi, which roll well, are much lighter than standard, and add to the ride comfort and speed. Another option is the Moulton,(my 11 speed Alfine hub gear SST) which breaks in two, and goes in its sleeves (or dedicated transport backpack) .... its the Jag xj6 of bikes, in its various forms, and the Joey is the old Volvo 244; Brompton is old Fiat 500. Horses for courses, but all can be made to work to various levels, over various distances I think. Much more useful these days than my bespoke older racing cycles.
I have a 11 speed Joey(mountain bike gearing 20 gear inch low), a Jones H bar, Topeak MDX rear rack, dyno hub front wheel. I have loaded 25 kg total weight with 4 panniers, handle bar bag/harness system. Not really fast but it is a sturdy bike and climbs well. Have even used Traveller bike/trailer case on a tour though prefer not to due to width of road I use.
How did you hook the trailer to your Brompton? Did you have to get a longer rear axle (skewer)? What type of attachment or gadget did you have to install first before connecting the trailer to the Brompton?
Trains ok with dog on your lap or at feet?
Good on yous, enjoyed that.
👍Thanks
What tyre and how many punctures
Which wheel size did you get please?
Hi- 24"
Which tyres?
Great vid, ive just dipped my toe into the bikepack thing by doing the ridgeway, really loved it, especially the hammock stop in some quiet copse. Your gear "looks" ace, beats my cable tie set up😂. How where the panier things on the rutted parts?. Nice film
Thanks. The bikepacking luggage is by Vaude. It helps to use eleastic at the bottom of the panniers to reduce them rattling.
@@krull57 cheers
Nice one, some good shots there.
Great video. Want to do this trip. What did u use to navigate the route? Cheers 👍
Thanks- I downloaded the gpx file from the cycling uk website and used a Garmin Touring cycling computer.

Lucy is perfect. 👌❤ Best regards
what was your max load, kg including yourself on the bike. I'm thinking of buying Brompton and would like to get some feedback on the max weight you carried on the bike.
I really don't have a clue. It was certainly above the recommended maximum 100kg
someone made a nice video👍
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
Hello, I'm wondering how easy it was finding places to camp. I'm heading over to Portugal with my Brompton and camping gear but don't like booking places in advance. How did you do it?
My neice and i are thinking of flying to Faro with bromptons and cycling north. Some warm showers hosts implied that the track was just too rough for small wheels. You two are 0bviously much tougher than 60 year old obese me. We are thinking of setting off in ten days for a 3or 4 night trip as Amy can only get that much holiday, if i got along OK I might stay two weeks and try for Lisbon. Really would like to correspond re this. Would be so grateful for advice.
Hi. We took 1 week for Lisbon-Faro. The tracks can be a bit rough in places but not excessively so. We did walk in a few places. More of a problem was soft sand or washboard tracks. We did detour onto the tarmac if it was too much. There weren't many places where there wasn't that option. I would give it a go. If your progress really is too slow, you can keep to the roads or as a last resort, hop a section on bus or train. That is what we did on the Porto- Lisbon section.
@@krull57 Sería interesante saber qué tramos evitar para tomar un tren o un blablacar y sufrir lo imprescindible
Thinking of taking my Brompton to Portugal and trying something similar.
Rob Gilbert. Have you actaully set off?
@@cheesemakerswighton I'm booked to arrive the third week of May on a scouting trip.
That’s was very helpful as I’m in planning stage for a train/bike tour. I don’t think my train service would except a “bag” bike though but I will inquire. I would add bubble wrap as additional protection just in case. 3:29
I would do more if flying, but on a train you can keep a better eye on it whilst in transit.
Hi, could you make a video about the bench and the dog..? I can't really find out how you dit this.
many thanks for sharing your wonderful tour. It is very inspirational . Would you let me know the size and the brand name of the red back pack you are are carring on your rear rack?
Hi, it was a 60L pack from Decathlon. If you look at my Portugal video, you can see we use another more recent version of the same pack.
@@krull57 I appreciate your favor …..
Exactly what I want to do as I have a friend in faro.
No hotels thought camping all the wauy
It looked very relaxing tour. Like how well your Bromptons handled the load.
It felt like hard work at the time! The bikes were excellent- couldn't have asked for more from them
Hi, what is the folded size of the bicycle at 2:50 of the video? Is it easy to roll the bike on the rear rack? It seems to be excellent for touring and bikepacking instead of just short commutes to the train, supermarket etc cause of the hassle of folding/packing.
Brilliant. Just essentials, enough said. Thank you.
