    This is the most clever carrot germination tip I've seen! I can't wait to give it a try. It took me 3 years to finally get carrot seeds to germinate, and then when I did, the squirrels immediately ate them 😭. But I think I've got my squirrel protection figured out now, so hopefully soon I will have actual carrots!

      Squirrels have wreaked HAVOC on my garden this year. Fortunately, they are easy to exclude if you really set your mind to it. I have created several planters that are now squirrel-proof, and my Fall garden is thriving. Rats are still a menace tho, and they are so much harder to control. I am sure this trick will work for you. Make sure to plant the seedlings as soon as you see the tiniest little tails emerging! Good luck! And btw, you can skip the freezer step, may take a day longer just on your kitchen counter. They should germinate in 4 days flat!

    saffron is a bit tasteless ... a bit vinegary ... if you want to have that reddish color in your biriyani, add beets to rice. you'll get that similar color.

      Hmm, the taste of saffron is subtle but obvious and to me absolutely delicious. I use it not just in rice dishes but also in sweet dishes. It is a delicate but unmistakable, and very flavorful! But different people would feel differently, I understand!

    Hi Tara 👋 I'm just checking in with some Saffron news of my own! I'm also trying to figure out how to grow it, and how to get it to flower too! I'm in The Central Texas Hill Country, zone 8B, so I like to think we have similar weather just like where Saffron grows best in the world ! And I've got good news! Just 5 days ago, one of my Saffron patches sprouted quite a few Saffron leaves!! I've got 4 different places where I planted Saffron, way back in 2019. I wasn't sure which spot it would like the best, so I just tried them all. And just like you, I had no idea there wouldn't be flowers every year! Two of the places I planted are in-ground, and 2 others are in pots. All 4 Saffron patches DID give me flowers the first 2 years, however, the 2nd year's harvest was definitely much smaller. However, the leaves have grown like gangbusters every year! But the last 2 years I've not had any flowers at all. Plus, in both of the in-ground Saffron beds, I'm pretty sure the "night animals" have dug them up and eaten them bcuz last year there weren't even any leaves in those spots. I have a family of skunks who pass through my yard pretty regularly, but it also could've been racoons, or even opposums who ate them too! Luckily, I still have 2 pots with Saffron corms in them! At least I HOPE the corms are still in both pots! Only one pot is now showing the leaves, who have only just sprouted 5 days ago. We've been in a drought for 3 years, so when it does rain, it's a big deal around here! I think it was our last rain that woke up those Saffron who are growing this time. Since it is November, the temperature of the water from that last rain was quite cold, even though our air temperatures have been unseasonably warm. So now, here it is toward the end of November, and my Saffron is finally getting started ! I was starting to think it wasn't even going to try this year! I don't dig my corns up, and then replant it each year. But I don't think it has ever started growing so late in the year before. I'm sure it has to do with how hot it's been. We're expecting a very light frost tonight, but then by Sunday it's going to be 90°f again. I do have a question about the flowering. As I recall, the flowers come very soon in the growing process. But I don't remember exactly HOW soon ! Since I'm not sure if this is "the year" for flowers, I am wondering if you can tell me when will I know the flowers are not going to happen? I feel like the flowers happen within the first 3-5 days of the leaves coming up. But maybe I'm not remembering correctly? The leaves have already been up for 5 days now. And I'm not yet seeing any signs of any flower buds. How many more days would you guess there to be until it's time to give up hope for flowers? I really like all the info in this video about the Saffron! You're right, it IS hard to find information on it!! ❤

      Thanks so much for your detailed account of your saffron growing experience. It was pretty fascinating, and good to know that you had many of the similar experiences that I did. So it does take between 4 to 6 weeks from the time you see the first green, for the flowers to actually appear. I am very surprised that you are seeing saffron corms sprout so late in the year. I would normally not expect that you would get any blooms with the weather having cooled off so much. I usually trigger saffron's growth by manually watering round about the September time frame. But would love to know more about your experience as it develops. Thanks again for checking in!

    I learn that using plumber patty and gorilla glue was less measy. Can i put a barbeque stick with a cork below just to see the water level with out opening the cover of the olla . Did you use a water moisture meter to compare how much and the distance or area the moisture can go. I have a four feet fruiting papaya tree can i use olla to water them.

      @GreenLove1 3 дні тому

      @@Ambroise1268 Yes you can certainly do that to see the water level in the area. Have not experimented too much with water meters for distance. I would imagine that a papaya is super thirsty and ollas might not be enough, But they could supplement additional needs.

      @@lilycardoso4679 yeh, sorry, it's been so busy! But yes it's a great time to start lettuce if you live in a milder climate. You can actually start outdoors, or you can start it in your greenhouse they'll grow faster and then move it outdoors. It's a bit early for tomatoes, but if you've got a heated greenhouse, you can definitely grow them!

If you are concerned about the dirt and grime that might flow from the rooftop, the advice is usually to empty out the first barrel that fills up after a long dry spell. • @Donkringel
      @Donkringel 11 днів тому

      @@forgotmypassword125 depends on how complex you want to make it, but you can do a lot of things to keep the water cleanish. Here are the ones I'm familiar with. 1) A dirt diverter. Basically a Y junction with a long length of pipe. Since the roof is feeding the barrel, anything on the roof at the beginning of the rain will be swept into the barrel. The diverter collects this dirty water with muck in it through gravity. Once it fills up, less debris strewn water goes into barrel. You uncap the diverter to flush the water out and reset. 2) Specific coating on the barrel. To keep out UV light (stops algae from reproducing) to a black exterior that helps heat up the water and helps reduce microbe reproduction. 3) In barrel filters. Usually a mixture of sand and carbon. 4) Filter barrels. You use multiple barrels with filters in them that gravity feeds them down the line to get increasingly clean water. 5) Chemicals. Just dump in some chlorine or bleach. Of course for plant watering you'll want to make sure you don't overdue it and kill the plants. You can actually reverse some of this once the water has been purified (chlorine I think) where you leave out the water and either let it off-gas or get hit with UV light, one of the two breaks it down. Overall for just watering the garden, you don't necessarily need to go overboard, just enough to keep bacteria and algae blooms from poisoning the water. Definitely add mechanical debris separators though, this will help your equipment from getting gummed up and increasing its lifespan.

But to be perfectly honest, I am saving up to replace them with actual GreenStalk spinner / movers, because those are just so much better! A bit pricey though!

    so after the flower wilts, just leave the bulb in the soil for it to multiply. And what kind of fertilizer is good for saffron

    • @GreenLove1
      @GreenLove1 17 днів тому

      Yep,.just leave it. Saffron does not need any fertilizer if it's in-ground, in pots just give it a well balanced liquid fertilizer during the active growth period.

    Wonderful! Got my bulbs from Renee's as well. My first year growing them and I started w/ 40 bulbs. Was a little late in the season, so in only a matter of days I had blooms. Came to your video for help w how to manage the bulbs post bloom and was happy to see the number of divisions. Although waiting 2-3 years for size is a small bummer. Thank you for the video, Tara.

    Thank you for the advice. I wanted to primarily dedicate one of my GreenStalks to a few pepper plant varieties. I will be leaving the GreenStalk outside year round (zone 8b/9a) and using the Frost cover when necessary. This spring will be my first time using my GreenStalk. In the fall will I need to treat the pepper plants like I am overwintering them and simply place them back into the GreenStalk?

    • @GreenLove1
      @GreenLove1 18 днів тому

      My experience with pepper plants has been that it's best to leave them in place, don't disturb the roots. Those overwintering steps are needed only if you are bringing them indoors.

I do have an entire playlist called "Growing Saffron" which includes harvesting videos, but really, all you need to do is regularly pinch off the orange stigma and let it dry in a plate for a week, and then store in the fridge in a small airtight jar!
