Android 9" head unit for 2009 Mercedes GL
My journey to install the Avinusa 9" Android oreo head unit into a 2009 Mercedes GL without Harman Kardon amp. How to over come the following typical problem: Use factory FM antenna, user factory review camera, install Apple Carplay adaptor, set time on instrument cluster clock, use factory microphones

Impressive, great work.
Why don’t you make a picture with original cablels which are green, blue, double white and yellow + two bigger connectors and tell us every one where it comes from
which OBD adapter did you use?

Hello, Thank you for mentioning in your video about the OEM analog clock, I was going to ask about the car clock and how to reset it, as the new Android screen does not control it. I was able to reset my clock with through the steering wheel on my W219
Hi, what is the price of this unit? Thank you for the great video
avinusa.com/9-touchscreen-multimedia-navigation-system-for-mercedes-benz-ml-w164-gl-x164.html
Did you add a sim card to the Avin unit itself to get 3g internet and then add the usb dongle to allow for hotspot or did you put a sim in a usb dongle to get internet and since it is wired directly to the unit, you still get internet while at the same time have hot spot for other devices or family sharing? Thanks in advance.
I added the sim to 3G dongle which then serves the wifi to the Avin and rest of family. The Avin in essence only powers the dongle and can read the memory card on the dongle. The Avin WiFi can not thether only connect to wifi. Caught me also by surprise.
@@reniervanrooyen3156 I have another issue. After installing the unit, it drained my battery down to nothing. I have it wired to the ground and the fat positive wire on the one block. Is there somewhere else that I need to wire it to so that it doesn’t drain my battery. Thanks!
Did you have to use an optical fiber decoder box for sound? And is there an adapter you use for oem backup camera to work?
Did not need a fiber decoder. My car does not have amplifier using fibre optic. I connected the OEM cameraca to the headunit using the the RCA to FAKRA cable shown in the video.
Hi Renier, could you get the audio and nav info to display on the little screen between the speedo and rev counter, my steering wheel buttons work to change the songs, I saw a video of setting this but I can,t find the bliksemse thing now. thanks
No I could not get teh instrument cluster screne to display much.
Auf deutsch wäre klasse
You are my blessing for having done this video much appreciated 🙏🏻
IT doesn’t seat well….
Damn bro… you really know what you’re doing. Thanks.
you cant set your built in clock.. and various other Car related features???
The video does address how to set the clock. You have to change the car configuration as without satellite navigation then you will have the option to set the clock using the buttons on steering wheel.
Where did you get the Pinout? I have been looking all over without much luck.
Renier, this is one of the best install videos I've seen. You've managed to solve one of the gaps with these aftermarket head units, making use of the factory microphone. I see the pinout diagram as: 1 - Mic 1 IN + 2 - Mic 2 IN+ 3 - Mic Shield 9 - Mic Ground This gets pounded into a 2.5mm TS Plug like this? 1,2 -> Audio and 3,9 Go -> Ground What about PIN 7???? Antenna Power (12V Ouput) what do you think that might be for? The double White FAKRA is AM/FM I saw in a forum someone traced it to route to the Sirus Unit. Have you figured any way to make use of the Factory SIRUS unit, or is that a lost cause?
I join mic pin 1 and 2 to 3.5mm audio jack +. Then pin 3 to the audio jack -. The shield has a connection to negative found on the unit quadlock plug. I did not use the antenna power lead. I assumed that the antenna is powered from the cambus. I must say that my FM reception quality is not great. Perhaps the antenna in not powered correctly. The dual antenna fakra with single pole in the head unit is still a bit of a mystery to me.
@@reniervanrooyen3156 Brilliant! I guess the car must have two microphones built in.
Hello, First of all, good review and overview video. Can you confirm that after installing that unit - does it show you the audio info at the instrument cluster?
Very little audio info is displayed on instrument cluster. It show the radio frequency like 98.0 but not the RDS info. If playing music from USB it shows track number but no titles.
@@reniervanrooyen3156 Thanks for the quick reply (Y) ! Another thing - can you turn off the reverse camera function so that it does not switch to reverse camera when reversing?
@@P6tu I don't know. I have not seen such setting on the head unit. Perhpas you can try using STAR system to change car config to "with out" reversing camera.
@@reniervanrooyen3156 Hi. My car does not have the back up camera, so I don't have such a setting unfortunately. One last question about your unit - do you have a "car settings" menu on your unit? You can check my video about a random eBay Android unit that I purchased: ua-cam.com/video/sZGnHDRQULY/v-deo.html . They appare to be quite different, but I'm wondering if one is better than the other or they just have different UI's, but are the same in reality...
Thank you.
Can u tell me where I can buy this, and what mosel # it is?
Hey do I need to download the app zbox before I can use the Apple cAr play ?
Yes.
Hey, I installed the radio, everything works fine, steering wheel control works, canbus also. I recoded command and navi from SD, but I still have problems resetting the clock on dashboard in speedometer. I show problem on movie: ua-cam.com/video/M4jOYPr1-Vg/v-deo.html Kiedy radio jest odłączone od kostek zegar nie resetuje się: ua-cam.com/video/0vy3GeI267Q/v-deo.html The manufacturer says that you need to disconnect the black and green wires from the canbus decoder. But I asked for photos so as not to make a mistake and I am waiting for them
For my car I used STAR disaable the option that the car has a satnav unit. Then you get eh options to set the dashboard clock from teh steering wheel buttons like models with not satnav radio. You can find location where to disable the Command on the net. I found this with quick searc mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w203/245639-w203-star-diagnostic-programming-after-removing-comand.html
@@reniervanrooyen3156 Yes i also use Star Diagnose and clock setting appear on dash. But everytime i put key in ignition position clock resset to 01:07am.
@@reniervanrooyen3156 When i disconect can bus decoder clock works normally without resseting. Manufacuter said me about cutting some wires from can bus decoder. He have to send me photos which wires but i try to solve problem myself.
Is there a certain way the pins go in to block B
Awesome video! What's the model did you buy? I don't get it properly at the beginning of the video.
I had this unit with 8 core processor. avinusa.com/9-touchscreen-multimedia-navigation-system-for-mercedes-benz-ml-w164-gl-x164.html
How can I connect the rear camera? I can't do it thanks
I used an adaptor from the OEM Fakra connector to the head unit yellow RCA.
what model and year is your car?

Hi, are you in NSW Australia?
South Africa
Great, Thank you
Hello I need a fiber decoder, where should I connect it? Ich drive a porsche cayenne Kind regards
I don't have experience in the installation of the fiber decoder. In theory it goes between the front R + L rca cable on the head unit and the fibre cable in the cable that is unplugged from the oem head unit.
Hi Reiner. Did you install the unit with all those connectors connection shown in your video, even the ones you planned not to use?
I did not use the connectors for the video in and outs.
Amazing Job Renier - followed your steps and could get gps and antenna connection, but now I am stuck with the system and can not get any sound of it and tv and dab+ is not working
Great info and well explained. I reckon even I can do it now.
Thank you for the helpful video. I would like to upgrade my 2012 GL-450. I live in USA. Can you please post the 9 inch head unit mode and make, all the parts and the links to buy. Thank you

Hi Renier, I do not have much electronic knowledge. Do you know if anyone in South Africa who knows how to install aftermarket head units? I ordered one from SEICANE and I hope it works. Brendan
Brendan, Most aftermarket car radio installers should be able to do the install. e.g. Rivonia Car Radio, Independent car Radio.
Hey buddy which wire is the OEM radio antenna and the GPS antenna for the ML or GL350 thank you

Hi for some reason I can't play this video on my youtube, I tried on my phone and desktop and even smart tv, same error (An error occured. Please try again later.(Playback ID:-fAYPQKE2QEdtLWH), Is there reason for this? Anyway I am dealing with same issue, I installed 9inch android radio in 2008 ML350 with HK amp, I did installed fiberoptic decoder and all is good, now I need your help for how to connect factory backup camera to android radio, there are three fakra plugs removed from factory radio, yellow, black and blue, yellow and black were used for radio ant adaptor comes with android unit and radio is working good, blue fakra plug is I think GPS ant, is it? there's no green fakra plug in this vehicle, any help would be appreciated, thanks.
In my car the double white fakra is the FM/AM antenna, Blue Fakra is the GPS antenna, Green fakra is the backup camera and the yellow is bluetooth. I would connect the yellow or black to the the backup camera cable and see if any of them works. I doubt that both of them is FM/AM antenna.
@Ilyas I just installed a similar head unit in my 2008 GL450, with factory backup camera. The 2009+ model have backup camera as green fakra connector like this video showed. 2008 uses 2 wires (black/white) in the large connector (either block A or B - i can’t remember which one). I bought a fraka to rca(female) how do i connect to my oem factory back up camera?
In my car the Factory backup camera cable has FAKRA connector. The head unit has a RCA connector for the camera. The adapter connects the two. See 19:56 in the video ua-cam.com/video/VDBhNSLd24g/v-deo.html
Renier Van Rooyen I tried to unplug all 3 of the fakra wires in oem unit to see which is the back up camera but if all of them are unplugged it still works. So I’m not sure which wire is the oem back up camera.

Hello sir did you do anything special for the Backup camera, I'm getting no video on my 08 GL450
@@user-mz4is8mz1k If the fakra wire method does not work, you need to find your oem back up camera wire then splice it to a rca video wire and then connect it to the aftermarket head unit.
Thanks for showing I will replace my head unit also is there a 14-inch screen?
I don’t think 14” will fit in the opening.
Thank You!!! This is a great video, very detailed.I will definitely buy a head unit now
thanks, interesting approach for the microphones. what did you end up doing with the microphone shielding lead that you left outside of the mic 3.5mm plug? did you actually attach it to anything? otherwise could you just connect the shielding lead to ground?
Yes I connected to ground.
Thankyou for the fantastic video. I wanted to use the factory microphones and your video describes exactly what I was looking for. If I can’t find an old harness, I’ll wire directly from the vehicle harness to the new headunit. Your method is much neater though!
I have a Harmon kardon system and I'm having issues I need some help...2010 ml350 with android 10 same unit but upgrade...email me for direction
Sorry, i don't have first hand experience with HK installation. You will need a fibre optic interface avinusa.com/most-fiber-optic-amp-interface-for-mercedes-ml-gl-r-clk-c.html In principle you need to take the Front left and right RCA connectors and plug them in to the fibre optic interface. Then plug the fibre optic cable, that was plugged in the OEM head unit ,in the interface. There is nice instructions in this link avinusa.com/most-fiber-optic-amp-interface-for-mercedes-ml-gl-r-clk-c.html
Great video. I just bought a 2008 GL550 and I'm looking to upgrade the outdated factory head unit. How does your 3G dongle receive wifi? Are you tethering off your phone or pay for some kind of internet subscription through your phone provider?
I am using 4G/LTE USB wifi router that is connected to one of the head unit USB sockets. I am using a pay as you go data SIM. The head unit connect to this WiFI hot spot. Also the children connects to this Wifi when traveling. When at home the head unit connect to the home wifi for downloading google maps or media.
Thank you. Your English is perfect and based on your knowledge of electronics, you are a man of great knowledge. I will attempt to complete the same installation into my wife's vehicle. If it is successful, then I will get yelled at for spending money on useless items. If I am not successful, then I will have to tell her the radio failed and needs to be replaced with a used one ie. Her old one. Thanks again.
Hello Sir, can you tell me what kind of amplifier is in your car, because I have 2009 your and a wound like buy audio from 2011 but somebody told me I have to pay attention to amplifier , If I have older model then it is not going to work

When you wired in the back up camera, did you need a trigger wire ?
No trigger had to be wired. It seem like the head unit display backup camera with signal via Canbus. I only connected the camera video cable using the Fakra/RCA apaptor
Thank you for sharing. I have a 2011 GL450 with HK amp. What is the main difference?
I do not have first hand experience with the HK amp. The installation should be the same except for installing a MOST fiber optic amp interface like: avinusa.com/most-fiber-optic-amp-interface-for-mercedes-ml-gl-r-clk-c.html The interface will plug in between the front L+R audio output from head unit and the fiber optic cables to the amp. I am not sure if the front/rear fader then works. Unless the fader/balance is controlled via the CANBUS. Avin should be able to confirm.
thank you for that detailed explanation of the installation the head unit!
Great job done!
