Sailboat & Shellessea Sailing
Приєднався 27 тра 2020
On March 30th, 2021, I bought my second sailboat - my first "big boat", a 30ft Beneteau from 1998.
I've been dreaming about this moment for years, I've been saving towards this moment, and running around every bend in the road to see if this lay ahead.
I'm 26 years old. At 10 years old I stepped onto a little 420 dinghy at a sailing summer camp and so started this lifelong affair with sailing. After passing my SEA (secondary school assessment) exams my parents bought me my first sailboat, a 420. From 2007 to 2018 I loved this boat, raced her and often single handed her in the bay. I dreamed of the day when I'd have a bigger boat and could go further and stay out longer.
There were many, times when I doubted that this dream wouldn't be fulfilled, yet here we are.

Preparing my sailboat for a storm | Tropical Storm Elsa
Hi folks!
In this video, I spent time tidying up the lines and preparing my boat for her first storm. Luckily down here in the Southern most part of the Caribbean we don't get bothered by more serious storms too often. This was during the passing of Tropical Storm Elsa which later became Hurricane Elsa.
Thanks to everyone who supports this channel and my sailing.

The progress is so satisfying to watch. IT was anyone's guess what the plastic water tank inside of the blue Plastimo cover looks like. I couldn't imagine that it would be this gross. No wonder the water on board smells so foul! FOLLOW: sailboat.shellessea This is part 1 one of this project, in part 2 I'll change out the hoses to complete the project. It was relatively easy to do ...

WELCOME TO THE ADVENTURE! sailboat.shellessea I’m Rushell, a travelling island girl and sailor. Today, the 30th March, 2021, I purchased my first “big boat”, a 30ft 1998 Beneteau. She was well loved by her last owner who lived aboard for 12 years and sailed her across the Atlantic at least twice. Since 2013 she's been resting up in preparation for her new adventure. Where are you what happened I miss you LOL
Nice job, been looking for flexible water tank for my boat project :)
I had a 50L plastimo one in my boat for 12 years. Three or four times in that period I ended up with mould in it. To clean, I used twine to tightly tie a piece of yellow dishwashing sponge onto the end of a broom stick. I then put about a litre of vinegar and a litre of water in it the bladder, and scub the inside with the sponge on the stick and then rinse it a few times. Cleans up easy. Generally I throw a few good swigs of vinegar in when I fill it as that helps keep mould away, and I don't use it for drinking anyway, just washing up, teeth cleaning, hand washing etc.
😘 Soooooo Cool Girl, well done , onward and upward
These tanks are just shit.Nothing semi permanent or even anything redeeming about them.I have tried everything to make them work, and I know....owned my yacht for 25+ years, had rubber bladders that finally burst....tried the plastimo....worse than junk.Donotfuckinbuy!
How come we haven't heard from you is everything okay?
Wow not bad quality from Plastimo for a 15yr old bladder. I just bought one. Will defiantly use a tank clean solution every so often. Good on you and your dad :)
What happened to ya?
Good video.
Great job! Storms may come but we all know you'll see them through.
Thanks for the encouragement BB
I would put some non skid on those steps and inspect the chain plates where you can't see them, and check the leaky areas for rot and delamination. If that was a gas can, I would not store it there. You can clean the exterior when the boat is in the water. That attachment on the bow might be storing a gin pole.
Someone clicked thumbs down? I would love to set up a Soprano's account for them...
That bladder would probably be ok to shower from, but don't think I would drink from it.
Mix a strong solution into a big garbage can and dip and soak them. Bleach kills everything...
You should binge watch UA-cam channel, "Sail Life" I have watched every one of his videos. Its like attending boat repair college.
Agreed! I do watch it a lot, definitely in my top 4!
It came with a water bed lol
Hahahaha perspective is everything haha
Everything seems to be coming along beautifully. Thanks for sharing, it’s exciting to watch all the progress you’re making!
Hi, greetings from Michigan. Is that a Tides Marine sail track on your mast? I just purchased one and am going to install tomorrow.
Hey I'll check, I'm not sure. Good luck with your install!
Hmmm, there is no link here to your wish list, and the one in your bio area doesn't work!
Hey Diana, I took them down, I'll explain tomorrow! Thanks for the support!
I love unboxings! Glad to see you came thru the storm ok. Even tho it skirted right by my front door, mostly lots of rain and a few wind gusts is all I got. Looking forward to your next video.
Glad to know that you weren't tramendously affected, storms are wild and a bit scary for sure!
Good work sweetie....keep on being safe....! Love what your doing!
Thanks Las! Bit by bit.
I was wondering where are you and how your doing. I know that you got hit by the storm and I was worried about you and your boat. Glad you survived the storm and nothing happened to you or your boat. Can't wait to see more videos.
Hope to see your videos, like windhippie, out on the big blue someday, stick at it, you have the passion youll get there one day, cheers 👍👍⛵⛵
How could we not like seeing that big pretty smile! Keep up the good work, one thing at a time and you'll be in the water soon enough.
Awww! Thanks for the encouragement!!
Amazing young lady I wish you fair winds and seas and I am looking forward to your next video.
Hooray! Thanks for the well wishes and for stopping by my channel! I'll be uploading one come Thursday :D See you!
you need to get some better tools, that multi tool getting to much work lol. great video tho :)
Hahaha I have, I haveeeeee ! I just left them in the truck because I didn't think I'd need them but then I decided to start on the propane system Thanks for watching and for your advice on the logo
Please keep up the vids (we love to watch them). The best YT videos in our opinion are just people doing their things they love. The excitement you show with your boat is much like we have about ours (purchased in 2019). Hope the restrictions end there soon.
Thanks so much for the encouragement!! I'm glad to know that they're enjoyed and by people who have boats themselves. I've found that now with a boat to manage I have less time to enjoy my fave UA-camrs. So an extra thanks to you for keeping up, it's appreciated. Hooray to sailing!!
It's good to have an update, way better then nothing at all. I can sympathize projects on hold. Hang in there.
Thanks Sam, I'm glad to know that. Doing what I can in the meanwhile.
Fascinating to see how much water collected in the DampRid containers. You're turning into a tech-mech-eng-tool-fixer-upper by force!
Haha that's certainly one way to look at it. I'm reading the manual for my engine and thinking, "gosh my brother learnt all about engines from toying about with them, here I am trying to learn about them by reading" I certainly hope it works! Hahaha I should get DampRid to sponsor me because I sing their praises! It is great! Good for cupboards as well (although I suspect somewhat toxic - but we won't go there)!
Yes, it must be a bit frustrating with the constant rain, as well as the curfew due to Corona 19. However, safety is the priority! Stay SAFE!
That's for sure! Soon enough, this will be a thing of the past. Thanks for watching!
Where are your tools? I hope you know that used boats are a work in progress. They need alot of attention. I wish my life was going better because I would be able to send you a care package. There are videos on youtube that explain which tools a vital for owning a used sailboat. They are basic tools to start out with, than you get more specialty tools as you progress. I advise you to go on youtube and watch these videos. Plus there is this book that I can't remember the name of it but it explains everything you need to know about working on a sailboat. I think its called the encyclopedia of maintenance on a sailboat. Almost every sailboat owner has this book. I used to own it but it got lost in the airport shipping. But I will get it again. It explains everything that you need to know to be able to fix anything on a sailboat. Plus alot of this information can be transferred to things on land. I highly recommend this book. Well good luck on your adventure and I can't wait till the day you set sail.
Hi John! The toolboc was in the truck, 8 didn't plan to have use for them on board this day but then found myself doing a job that would have been better serviced with a flatblade. Thanks for your kind thoughts and comments. I'll look for this book. I need as much helpful information as possible at this point. A-ha I would love to be able to go sailing some time soonish. At this rate though, it might be a good while!
@@sailboatshellesseasailing4567 well I wish you luck and that book I told you about is very informative. I used it to help my sister in Hawaii to help her set up and trouble shoot her problems with her solar panels. I doubled her solar output and made it quicker to charge up her batteries just by using the information I read in the book. Plus I set up a outside shower system for her. That book has so much information in it, plus it had diagrams and everything. I was totally impressed with that book.
Wow John! That sounds like quite the book, I'll search hard for it and I'll let you know if I come across it. Thanks again :)
Could it be the Practical Encyclopedia of Boating?
@@sailboatshellesseasailing4567 yes I think so.
New subscriber.
Aww! Thank you!
How does your father feel about you buying a boat and sailing away.
Haha good question! He knew that it was coming. I've been talking and dreaming about having a bigger sailboat (than the 420 I owned) for years and years. I wanted to do this during university but it only come to pass at the very last moment. Dad's a mariner so I reckon he's quite proud actually!
Good idea to go after the propane system next. Definitely not something you want to take a chance with.
Thanks Ron! Yes, I like both my boat and my life so I don't want to take chances there. THANKS for watching!
Wow that cleanup made a huge difference! 👏👏 and loved seeing your father on this episode! 😂😂 at his tripod comment
Thanks Briege! Yes, it turned out better than I thought. Hahaha dad had lots of fun.
double check the O-ring on the both, fill in and fill out adaptor, if slightly cracked or not soft anymore, changed them, cost 2-3 euro and you don’t want to end with 150L in the bilge (was lucky in my case only ~50L were remaining when the O-ring decided to leak)
Oh dear! Yea that would be a mess! Thanks for the idea.
Those plastimo tanks are not meant to be used for more than 2 years They are disposable
Hey, from what I've read and seen on line they don't have such a short timeline for their planned obsolescence. They last several times 2 years.
Good luck with your refit👍🙂
Thanks for the well wishes Ciaran!
@@sailboatshellesseasailing4567 I was considering these bladders for my 21ft sail boat. But the current mooring on a tidal river would make it hard to fill. 🙂👍
Congrats....looking good. I'm looking forward in following your adventures.
Thanks Las! I appreciate it :D More videos are coming soon.
Wow living the dream ❤👍🏽
Yes!!! I'm so happy to be doing this. Thanks for the comment and I hope that your dreams come through too!
Nice one! Good job with the channel. You should use PromoSM!!! I used it to promote my Instagram and it helped my posts start to trend. It could really help you promote your videos too!!!
Any help you need in boat work or maintenance of the boat, I don’t mind helping you in those areas
My wife and I think you are adorable…keep up the videos and the content young lady!
Awwww!! Thank you, this comment is just to sweet, thanks you two!
I believe if you did steam it it would have done the trick
Hey John, that's a good idea too! I'll write it down in my maintenance log so I can keep it handy. Cheers!
Love your vids and your spirit young lady…
In UK I think we just call them hose clamps too 🤔
Ohh! Thanks, hmm, I wonder if it is a small subculture thing. The more you know! Thanks for the info.
Big difference, I'll have to check mine also. The tank on my sailboat is built in, I may have to change to get a liver instead. It looks a lot easier to clean than having to try to snake you arm all the way in the tank to clean. I also just use it to clean the boat and wash my hands. Good luck.
I know right! I was very happy to see that. I read online that I should use some Milton water treatment tablets when I reinstall it and fill it up. As for the tanks, I feel you. I have to clean out my diesel tanks which are solid built in tanks and it's definitely going to be a challenge. Good luck with your tanks Jose. Thanks for the support!
Nice to see your dad starring in the video. When will your mom make a guest appearance?
Thanks aunty! Mom is coming up in a future video, her part is filmed already :)
Although, mom said she'll come aboard when it's for her to sail and drink wine hahaha
@@sailboatshellesseasailing4567 a long press on your comments & you can easily edit existing posts 👍
never the best option using bleach for plastics... most bleaches are oxidisers & will break down plastics quicker than normal especially If soaked... use caustic soda... it's much much cheaper too... excellent for bottom cleaning too... the boat that is. Be extra careful using caustic it turns the oil & fats in your skin... to soap... it dissolved organics including you... always gloves & glasses...
Wow! Thanks Errol, I didn't know that
As a seaman who has been adrift for days; all fresh water stowed onboard should be drinkable in an emergency. So even though I won't drink water out of that tank as a habit; I'd make sure that it is always in a safe drink condition. I probably won't put a filtration system on such a small water source but I'd make sure to change the total volume out on a regular basis, have water treatment tablets on hand and keep the contents treated. I'd try to keep planned short term drinking and cooking in clear bottles and major supplies in the blue water kegs. Seaman's tip: Never fill your water bottles or kegs to the brim, always fill to 75 - 80%. In an emergency ditching any container that gets away or that you jettison would stay afloat so you can gather them and either have water available or empty some and turn them into floating aids and help make your visual signature much larger for potential rescue. Also, keep a free flying short tag cord attache to each container, not long enough for tangles but just a enough that would allow you to tie any flotsam together. Another plus is that if ship recked or grounded and forced to swim ashore; those containers with fresh water may wash up on the shoreline.
WOW! All of this is GOLDEN! Thanks for the advice and my goodness, what an experience. Glad you lived to 'tell the tale'. I see what you mean with making sure that all fresh water on board is drinkable, makes sense. I'm so funny about drinking water that tastes weird so I'd possibly buy those big gallon bottles of filtered water too for drinking with easily. Maybe even attach a spigot too. Thanks for the comment and your support, it's very much appreciated! Maybe you can share more about your experience adrift some time (of you want to)
