Sail For Epilepsy
United States
Приєднався 19 сер 2020
Philip Haydon is a neuroscientist with medically controlled post-traumatic epilepsy. He and the Sail For Epilepsy team are on a mission to sail the ocean's of the world to raise awareness of epilepsy. Sail For Epilepsy's goals are to:
• inspire people with epilepsy
• promote awareness of epilepsy and educate the public
• raise funds to support research for a cure
The voyages are about more than sailing. We will make landfall during the project to engage with local epilepsy communities and interact live with our Virtual Shipmates while we sail. Our hope is that this voyage will inspire people with epilepsy, their families, and their caregivers to ask themselves, are you able to do something to improve your quality of life? Can you take one extra step to do something you haven’t done before, with the necessary guardrails in place?

Yesterday Phil was sailing for Virtual Shipmate Heather Crane, who has accepted the One More Step Challenge (www.sailforepilepsy.org/join-one-more-step-challenge/shipmates/), choosing to do something to live a fuller life. She loves to cook but has been nervous about it since developing myoclonus (a sudden involuntary muscle jerk, shake, or spasm). However, she has signed up for a cooking class...

Winter Project: Mast Track Upgrade
Переглядів 923 місяці тому
After experiencing an equipment failure that hampered performance during the 2023 Bermuda 1-2, we decided to implement an upgrade to the mast track aboard Fearless. This winter we installed a @harken track and sliders that removes the need for a mast gate (which had covered the slot that our old sliders fed into on the mast). We're about two months away from the start of the @bermudarace and we...
Repacking & Re-arming My Life Vest

A key piece of safety equipment aboard any boat is a life vest. Those we use at Sail For Epilepsy auto-inflate when submerged in water - here's how I recently re-armed it after testing it out. ➥ Visit www.sailforepilepsy.org for more information 🔔 Click to subscribe to our channel: bit.ly/3OGkb3F 🙌 Support our mission: bit.ly/3H37bn7

50 Years of Epilepsy
Переглядів 34Рік тому
On July 6, 1973 I was riding my bike home from school when someone threw a house brick that accidentally hit me the head. I started having seizures soon after and lost a piece of skull. After surgery to fit a plate and several years of trying different medication, I gained control of my seizures and have been seizure free for over 40 years. On this 50th Anniversary I take a moment to thank the ...

Phil - Nice to meet you and your team at RBYC and big thanks to Joe Cooper for his excellent summary of your program. Congrats on the win and continued good luck. I’ll be following! Andy from SKADI
We'll pass along your well wishes to the guys as they race home!
How did you and followed the dancing bear in the race
It’s my current battle with epilepsy, I get panic attacks all the time just because I’m alone somewhere. Learning to combat it but it’s hard.
Your page means more than you would know.
Thanks for these videos. What life jackets do you guys use?
We like the Spinlock Deckvest Vito, with tether.
very nice!
Very cool. Nice to see that the journey and mission are going well.
Your project is going great! We will be in Seattle in August for a couple of days. Would love to see you guys! Phil
Such an inspirational and heartwarming interview!
And Greg?
Thank you for this. I actually always wanted to know how they do this…especially for long journeys. :) All the best.
A Message from Phil: I am glad that you found it helpful. I have been really surprised how simple the process.
I’m planning a shore party here, 1300, 6 July. Happy sailing until then.
Hi Phil, Thank you for the message from the middle of the Atlantic. I was due to do my Level 2 training later this week but it has been cancelled last minute and reoganised for the end of August. The main training I am doing is more fitness approached. Thank you for thinking I am 31 which I wish I was but I am actually 51. Keep up the good work and may you have fair winds and following Seas. Sean
God Bless all of you and safe travels for epilepsy awareness. 🙏💕🥰🏝
really good to see content like this i just recently got diagnosed with epilepsy as i had a tonic clonic seizure just over a month ago and am on anti seizure meds as of now so, so far so good but my dream job was to be a pilot but it is kind of off the table now with my recent diagnosis but sailing or working on a boat has always been a another dream of mine really hoping i can do something like this in the future.
There are so many similarities.Though I didnt want to be a pilot a a profession I did want to learn to pilot a plane. But, clearly that was out. Then I slowly looked for other dreams. When I was young I used to do white water kayaking. After my head injury I felt that was too dangerous. But I love being on the water. So eventually I decided to learn to sail and got hooked. Keep being positive and you will find something that fits.
@@Fearless-sailing thanks! Looking forward to it
