The BEST View (It’s Not What You Think) Plus Dog Friendly Hike at Zion National Park
We discover hidden gems here at Zion National Park.
Wild, Wild West Adventures of Mom, Dad, Girl, and a Little White Dog Daily Journal
Day 60:
We make our way into Zion National Park and are impressed again with how nice everything is. It almost has that amusement park feel with brand new signs and shuttle stops everywhere.
Summer isn’t the ideal time to go as daytime temperatures average in the high 90s and even into the 100s, but Zion is a place I have wanted to visit and it happens to be on the way back home. 😁 Poor Jason. He really does not tolerate the heat well. The things you do for the love of a sun-loving wife. ☀️ Jason cools off in the air conditioned camper while Alexis and I take Polly for a little walk along the Virgin River. We love searching for new wildflowers to decipher! We end our evening with a Ranger program about Bats. Did you know there are 17 different kinds of bats here at Zion?
Day 61:
We’ve traded in banana slugs for lizards and hummingbirds!
As I sit outside enjoying the morning warmth, I am greeted by a couple adorable little lizards 🦎 😍🦎 and several sweet hummingbirds flying around the trees. There aren’t any flowers on the tree so I’m not sure what they are looking for. Maybe just a little place to rest in between flower nectar sipping.
I just love embracing the new flora and fauna at each new destination! These Moon Flowers (AKA Datura) are really the show stoppers here at Zion National Park! They are all closed up in the heat of the day, but in the evening after the sun goes down, they open up into these white glorious blooms! They’ll stay open in the early morning until the sun gets too hot again.
After the rest of the family awakes, we drive the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway and through the over 1 mile long historic Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel. Construction began in the late 1920's and was completed in 1930. At the time, it was the longest tunnel of its type in the United States. It’s amazing the intricate construction exploding through one mile of a giant Mesa - it’s almost 100 years old!
There are a few windows throughout the tunnel that give you a little peek out into the landscape. They are also visible on the outside of the Mesa.
We hang out on a few different pull offs, exploring the Mesas and their unusual and beautiful design and coloring.
It’s getting pretty hot 🥵 so we head back to the air conditioned camper for dinner and a little evening chill time.
We end our evening with a Ranger Program about Raptors. Alexis is totally loving the Ranger Programs. She always likes to go up and ask questions at the end. 🤓
Day 62:
I decide to beat the heat and head out early to hike the Zion Canyon overlook trail. Alexis rolls out of bed to join me. “I wanted to still sleep, but I wanted to hike with you more.” 😜🥰
The overlook trail was really quite exciting with little bridges, caves, and several railed sections with drop offs! By the time we started heading back to the truck the heat was really getting intense. Alexis didn’t fair well and melted down both physically and emotionally.
After we got some food in her belly and a little rest in the air conditioning during that peak heat in the afternoon, Alexis was ready for our next adventure! Jason still wasn’t ready to brave the heat. So Alexis and I take Polly on the dog friendly Pa’rus Trail along the Virgin River. We didn’t get a chance to hike the whole trail because we were getting hungry for dinner.
After dinner we planned to do a family hike on the Zion Canyon overlook trail, but a storm ⛈ came and it rained the rest of the evening.
I attempt to take Polly out for her last potty before bed , but she is not having it! The Little Princess doesn’t like her paws 🐾 wet! 🤣
She’ll go potty in the rain in the wet grass at home, but all the red mud is a different story. And it’s slippery too! I end up slipping in the mud and getting it all over my legs. 😳
Thankfully there’s enough fresh water in our tank for a good shower - for both Polly and me - just not at the same time!! 🤪🤣🚿 🐶🚿

We actually were planning to stop at the Airstream factory to buy one of their eclipse T-shirts, and hopefully view from their parking lot, but everything was closed off and closed down! Bummer for us, but glad that they all had the day off to enjoy the eclipse. ☺️ We ended up at the Wally Byam Memorial Park there in Jackson Center. We did pass the air and space museum thinking that would’ve been a great location for viewing, but ended up continuing on to Jackson Center since we were more familiar with that area and knew there were a lot of wide open spaces.

Nice video, the coast is so stunning. We had an Airstream and also did the OR and CA coast. Ugh, it was such a pain the @ss to tow, un-hitch, etc..While its awesome once we got to a campground, it was horrible finding an impromptu camp spot as we didn't fit in most of them. Driving in any city was a no go as we were too big. While the coast was stunning, the hair pin turns south of Monterey Bay was horrible to drive. WE traded in for a 24' campervan and even though is so much smaller, we are much happier. Easier to pack, go, and maneuver. Plus we fit into any camp spot.

@sasstewart1222 Thank you! 😊 I definitely agree with all of that! It was nice having our bathroom and food with us the whole drive, but it was truly horrible finding campsites along the coast. And it was such a shame because we saw so many empty campsites, but there was no way to reserve them unless you did it two days in advance. We do feel like we will end up with a camper van one day when it’s just the two of us. 🥰🥰 Happy Travels!
