You say you intend in the near future to ship your car and camper to Asia to continue your travels.... This will be difficult for you. Both Vietnam and Cambodia do not allow visiting foreigners to obtain a drivers licence, and foreign drivers licences are not recognised. (to obtain a local drivers licence, foreigners must be resident of the country. In Cambodia, resident foreigners have a wait of up to 2 months to obtain a Cambodia drivers licence. In Vietnam, the mandatory written test exam to obtain a licence is in Vietnamese only, requiring far more than basic comprehension of vietnamese language, not withstanding the limitation on obtaining 'residency" being restricted to employees, employers, or foreign govt staff). There are no campgrounds and roadside camping is prohibited. You will also be hindered by the mandatory import tax in both countries (approx 40% of the value of the vehicle, and 30% on the camper), which you will need to pay both in Cambodia and Vietnam. The govt does not care if the vehicle entry is only temporary. Tax rate is same as imported vehicles regardless. In both countries, even minor traffic offences can result in seizure of the vehicle. This always occurs on higher priced vehicles. The impound fees are crippling, to the extent, most people do not retrieve their vehicles after impound period has ended, being unable to afford the impound fees. As a non-resident of these countries, you are prohibited from registering the vehicle. Bottom line is that in these two countries, it will cost you an arm and a leg to get the vehicle and camper into the country, you will not be able to register it to legally drive on the roads, and you will be unable to obtain a drivers licence and therefore can not legally drive... If you were to drive and get stopped by police (which is a certainty), they will seize your vehicle and camper and impound for minimum of 30 days with impound fees that will cripple you to get them out of impound. I believe that Thailand and Laos have same standards. (I presently live in cambodia, and previously lived in Vietnam)

This is a great video giving travellers an idea of what to expect at free camps. Great idea to camp near other people for safety and to share knowledge and experiences. Well done guys!

Might not have helped in this exact situation. But maybe worth a try next time: We sometimes just use our drone to inspect the area to find the track (which is supposed to be there). Start pushing it really high to get a good overview and to spot contours. Use the digital zoom to inspect specific aspiring areas. And finally, potentially fly towards promising spots to inspect them more closely. Helped us a few times in the wild. 🤷

Out past silvertown near broken hill. We camped in the desert. Best & scariest lighting, thunder storm I had ever seen. It was all electrical & thunder, no rain where we were but out further it flooded. It was like the world was coming to end. It was amazing to watch the flashes, lighting up the desert floor, like monsters were in the lightening. The bolts were that big. It was scary yet hard to take your eyes off it happening. I would have hate to been directly in it. I think it would have exploded the caravan to pieces

Ridiculous.... camping with others. Most go camping to be isolated, not packed into areas where you are told you can go....there is nothing lucky about that. It's our country and the government work for us. Camp where you want and put a stop to being closed off to our beautiful country.
