I've Finished Building.... Dolgoch by destroying a Bachmann Thomas & Friends Rheneas
It's taken a while but I've finally finished destroying the Bachmann Thomas & Friends model of Rheneas and have produced a model of Dolgoch which I'm really happy with.
In this video we have a look at the final weathering stages, and compare it to both the original Rheneas model and the model of Talyllyn I made previously by destroying one of Bachmann's Thomas & Friends models of Skarloey.

Building Dolgoch... by destroying a Bachmann Thomas & Friends Rheneas: Black Paint and Unicorn Poo

In what will probably be the penultimate video in this series, of building Dolgoch... by destroying a Bachmann Thomas & Friends Rehneas model, I've now applied a varnish layer to the model which gives a lovely matt surface finish. Unfortunately this has almost used up my remaining stock of Testors claque which is no longer available. If anyone has any recommendations for an alternative please d...

Building Dolgoch... by destroying a Bachmann Thomas & Friends Rheneas: Adding the Details

Continuing the long running build of Dolgoch... by destroying a Bachmann Thomas & Friends Rehneas model and we are almost done! I've now painted and fitted all the pipework and glued the cab to the body. The only things left ate another weathering wash, varnish, and a final weathering which should hopefully all come together quickly..... when I get the time to do any modelling.

Having recently had a look at a RTR model of the L&YR 0-4-0ST that I ruined with super glue, I've made the decision that I really need to either repair and improve it or just get rid of it. Given it's not worth selling in it's current state and I don't want to just throw it away the only route left is to repair and improve it so..... Building Dolgoch... by destroying a Bachmann Thomas & Friends Rheneas: First Weathering Pass

Continuing the long running build of Dolgoch... by destroying a Bachmann Thomas & Friends Rehneas model, we have moved on to the first weathering pass. This is all a bit messy as there is lots of black paint and water but the result is worthwhile. I've also started to add in and paint some of the details including the stupidly tiny, scratch built, oil can in the cab.

      Doing Smudger is great and a little different, can't imagine there are many people out there who have gone that route! Not sure what I'm doing with the couplers for now. I've kept hold of them and can easily fit them if I want to, but I'm wondering about doing something a bit less obvious if I can. Not that I envisage these doing much in the way of pulling anything given other than the test track I don't currently have anywhere to run them,

    I've owned a High Level kit for the Dapol Pub since 2010 by haven't got around to doing the update yet. The kit isn't suitable for the Hornby version which they bought off Dapol.

    • @encoffeedrinker
      @encoffeedrinker 27 днів тому

      It's interesting that you say it isn't suitable for the Hornby version of the model. I have previously owned both a Hornby and Dapol example and they seem identical. Also the instructions for the chassis kit are explicitly entitled "Chassis kit for Hornby/Dapol L.Y.R. 'Pug'". Any thoughts on why it wouldn't work with a Hornby model? Also if you have the kit did it come with the hornblocks for compensation or would I have to buy those separately? I'll double check with High Level but it would be good to know in advance either way.

    • @andrewdking
      @andrewdking 26 днів тому

      @@encoffeedrinker I had to go rummaging in my loft to find my kit. When I ordered it, I made sure all the additional parts needed (wheels/ motor etc) were included at additional cost. Now the Hornblocks and their corresponding brass front wheel bearings come in their own little bag and have a complete page of instructions to themselves. Luckily I'm a mechanical engineer because the kit looks very complicated for such a tiny little locomotive, but the diagrams look decent enough (for me anyway). Sorry, but it looks like I gave you a bum steer on the Hornby vs Dapol front. It's the original Airfix kit it can't be installed in say the instructions.

      Having looked at their instructions it doesn't seem difficult a build, although I've not yet worked out if the kit includes the horn blocks for the compensation or not. You should never use Gorilla Glue period... These brands are literally the factory floor sweepings. ZAP is my preffered brand supplied in Thick, Medium & Thin variants with a KICKER that either you can spray on to get an instant bond or better still spray KICKER on one part then offer it to the a glued second part, instant bond. If you apply Cyanoacrylates with a pin it's fine, you don't need a lot to make a decent bond, just clean and grease free.

    • @encoffeedrinker
      @encoffeedrinker Місяць тому

      Interesting.I have previously used Zap (I want to say green, but I can't remember how thick that was) but ended up switching to gorilla glue when I couldn't get it for some reason. I've not had any problems specifically with it (I always decant a tiny amount and then use a pin or thin wire to move it to where I need it), but I might try looking for Zap and their kicker next time I restock and giving it another try. I do really like the Gorilla Glue wood glue though, it seems to work really well.

    Looking at prototype pictures the cab sides look shorter and there is only one set of vertical rivets. It almost looks as if the model has a half etch for a 90 degree bend, but I can’t imagine what for. Either way I’d check the dimensions as it may be the roof is ok and it’s the sides that are out. Looking good though!

    • @encoffeedrinker
      @encoffeedrinker 2 місяці тому

      Yes apologies, I didn't make a good job of showing the etched cab sides. They are designed so you can build the cab either as it was originally built or the GWR rebuild. The original cab was shorter (front to back) so you would trim the etch along the half-etched line at which point the roof would probably be the right size. I'm doing the GWR rebuild though so don't need to cut it down and only need to punch out one set of rivets. I'll try and remember to explain that properly when I get to assembling the cab for real.

I've seen it since childhood from the 2005 DVD and I'm hoping to get the 2023 DVD soon so I can have both the 40 colour episodes (I had them before on the 2005 DVD as mentioned above but most of the episodes are turned into omnibus editions of the stories) and the 32 black and white episodes (I've never had these on DVD and it is the first time the 1960s episodes have been put out on home media since the 1959 episodes telling The First Story had already been released on VHS in the 1990).

    I noticed that Kato sells these pocket locomotive that is just the motor. I wonder if these are the same as if you were ripping them out of trams. They sell for about the third the price of a tram, considering a tram you get two.

    • @encoffeedrinker
      @encoffeedrinker 8 місяців тому

      Unfortunately they aren't the same motor bogie. This model uses the 11-104 model which as you can see in the video is approximately the same length as this loco. The trams we pull apart (the PORTRAM or CENTRAM) use much much smaller motor bogies, and while buying a tram is expensive I think given the engineering that goes into the bogies they are worth every penny if you want to model something so small you need one -- there is no way I could build a chassis for something like my G-Series Simplex or Alan Keef K12 models whereas I could potentially build a chassis for a Baguley-Drewry sized loco.

I think it went missing in a house move when I was in my late teens.

    I really want to try my hand at building one of these sometime. Incredible to see a model that tiny.. On the subject of paint, I recall using a Tamyia yellow from a spraycan and it went very well. Yellow seems to be a very difficult color for some reason, but I had no trouble with Tamyia's yellow. Not sure what paint is available near you but if you can get your hands on some, it may be worth your time!

    nicely done. Talyllyn and Dolgoch were never bright and shiny in their working lives. The might get a new coat of paint during an overhaul but with Welsh weather and hard work they would be dull and dirty fast. But they were able to plod along the valley pulling wagons and passengers daily. Speaks a lot about these little engines.

    I love the driver figure, im building a PS diesel box cab but with narrowed chassis rails and outside link rods rather than chain drive, i went for the diesel box cab for the extra room inside for radio gear and possibly a sound system and maybe even smoke generator, i hear hes doing a belt drive chassis soon, there amazing for the price of them really.

    • @encoffeedrinker
      @encoffeedrinker Рік тому

      That sounds like an interesting build. I've not seen a price for his belt drive chassis yet but I assume they'll be cracking value like the other models. My only concern, from looking at a couple of product photos, is that there will be no way to change the belt. So if it snaps or gives over time you'll lose the 4 wheel drive. I guess that's less likely to be a problem in this scale than the smaller scales (belts in OO9 can be a problem over time) but it is one of the reasons I liked the use of a chain as it can be replaced or tweaked if necessary.

    Your expanded metal looks pretty good. I recently tried my hand at making some but for my project I needed the holes to go all the way through. So it was a challenge to do on a FDM printer. Used a .2mm nozzle with a .2 line width. But each wire had to be 2 lines wide so the holes are probably twice as big as yours. Anyhow they look like they will work for my project.
