Sucks the most: Meshtastic Antenna Lilygo Stock VS The Alien

I compare the Lilygo Stock antenna to The Alien antenna. For the test I used Bandit Nanos as the meshtastic nodes and mounted the antennas on Diamond K400s mounts on my car. Then I drove to Auburn and Sacramento to see which antenna would pick up the most nodes along the way. To keep the test fair, and to make sure the Bandit nodes are truly equal, on the way home we changed shoes and ran Alfa ...

Meshtastic Long Distance Yagi Bridge
Переглядів 8562 місяці тому
Comment and let me know what area of California I should target for this long distance bridge. The idea is simple, my two yagis will talk to each-other through their rear signal lobes since they are so close to eachother, they will pass traffic. I want to put them in repeater only mode so they don’t take up hop counts and limit the nodes from reaching far places as in router mode it would subtr...

Nice
Would you feel ok sharing the node ID (hex)? I think it would be fascinating to go through mqtt and the node map to see how far away in all directions a node like that is reaching as reported by other nodes that are seeing it.
Man! That tower is crowded as f! 😂 Crazy how many dishes up there.
I don't understand why this works? I thought antenna length should be 1/4 wavelength, but a yagi is far longer.
@@KateHikes1933 A Yagi antenna, also known as a Yagi-Uda antenna, works by using wave amplification to direct radio waves in a specific direction. This allows the antenna to receive and transmit signals over longer distances and with greater clarity than an omnidirectional antenna. Here's how a Yagi antenna works: Elements A Yagi antenna is made up of a long boom, a dipole, directors, and a reflector: Boom: The long pole that points in the desired direction Dipole: The active feed line that absorbs and radiates the signal Directors: Branch off from the boom at right angles, helping to direct the signal and provide power and gain Reflector: Sits behind the dipole, reflecting the signal in the opposite direction Wave amplification The directors and reflector work together to amplify the signal in one direction and reduce it in other directions. This is achieved by using phase cancellation, where the radio waves are carefully sized and spaced to reinforce each other in a specific direction. Directionality The Yagi antenna's directionality comes from the reflector blocking waves coming from the rear of the antenna. Yagi antennas are often used for rooftop television antennas, amateur radio, CB radio, and cell phone reception. They are directional, so they must be pointed directly at a signal source for optimal performance.
Great job on the wiring. Really looking forward to your video on this.
Link for yagi?
Made me smile... but i can't share because not a single person i know will get it lol..
I love my G2. I'm running an 8dBi antenna on mine. The ultra low noise Rx pre-amp gives it about 4bD better Rx than most radios. It's not a crocodile.
Is that a server? A priner? Or maybe even a router??? Idk

It would be interesting if SoCalMesh could somehow push out eastward to Palm Springs and from there to Las Vegas. I think a node somewhere up near the top of the Palm Springs aerial tramway might have a shot to Vegas. I also think somewhere around Big Bear might be able to see both that aerial tramway location and Los Angeles if the tramway couldn't see LA directly. Obviously a lot of research would have to go into it.
How many farrs does it talks
how did it go? Im working on setting up a repeater for my local town myself.
Same here. Solar node with 15 dB antenna up 40 feet. What are you putting up?
Yeah. One antenna outside. One inside a metal car.
How dare you say that! My car is made entirely out of paper mache. Really though, same test with antennas mounted outside on my TWO external vehicle mounts yielded the same exact results. 😊😂
@ke6vdw lol. I believe ya. I have an alfa 915 but it didn't fair any better than the included pcb antenna on the RAK wizblock. But I think I got something else going on
Nice! Gotta link for that particular mount?

Where did you get the mag mount for the Alfa 915?
It’s a trunk-lip mount not a mag mount. Made by Diamond Antenna, model K400s. I have another video on my channel showing complete installation of it as well.

It tried hard the first pass, it was the backstroke that did it in. Good to know 👍 de KN6JHC
It does seem the first direction handled better.. no noticeable movement. You are right, the backstroke did it in. I wonder why.. perhaps the Alfa cover was glued a bit better from the one side so it was able to physically handle it better from there. Thanks for watching and supporting my crazy hobby videos. @@ke6vdw Good to hear. Well if it is cellular and 5G from dishes, there must be a quiet spots on that mast.
Do you guys use medium fast settings?
We do not. We know Andy Kirby made a video about how people In the UK are all moving to that however that is not the right move in our opinion. For now stay in LongFast until newer methods are proven. We’re working on custom repeaters that can tie MediumFast to LongFast and more. Stay tuned.
@ke6vdw I experimented with LoRa years ago using a lora capable hamshield and lorachat on 440 mhz. Since you're likely familar with San Diego, I was able to TX/RX from my home in La Mesa (roughly university ave and 70th st at 500' above sea level), all the way down to the west corner of downtown (roughly C st and broadway 4th level of a parking garage). Done at only 1 watt, likely a bit less, but with maximum spread factor and bandwidth settings. Blew my mind. That's 9 miles direct through multiple freeway interchanges and ground elevation changes. It did require a good antenna and hardline at the house side, and band pass filters on both sides to knock the noise floor down. Both antennas were mono band folded dipoles. No yagi/directional was used.
Ahi ya es parte de San Diego verdad? Linda vista de todo esos Cerros! Deberia de reunir un grupo de Amigos para limpiar y pintar un poco, para aguardar la historia de ese lugar. Bendiciones
This is how you hide your hamshack from the missus
Good luck brother. I’d love to see someone break the record with yagi antennas. I think I read the current record is held by people with relatively normal antenna and that two yagis could destroy the current record. I’ll be following you to see how it goes.
Thank you! I had already set a record from Santa Barbara to Tijuana Mexico but for some reason they ignored it. I am excited to see how far this performs. Thanks for your support.
Put your hand outside the window and try again.
Did this, forgot to film will update with another video. SAME results.
I have a log periodic antenna i use with my T beam and i am able to reach palomar from point loma. That yagi on any mountain top is gonna go FAR.
Great idea! What are the power requirements for those Station G2 radios and are you powering with solar or another source?
I’m building a larger solar setup for it with a much larger battery, I’ll share the details as I build it.
Yeah, makes sense. You thinking of using solar panels as some of the walls for the radio enclosure?
@@GregCoreyTech No, just a large 100w panel.
15V USB PD or 9-19V DC. 20 or 30 watt on the power supply (by memory).
Awesome KN6JHC
Great idea and video. I saw someone do this idea on a video and should work well
I’m consulting with the community and the Meshtastic team to see how best to setup the device. I want to make sure if possible that Im not sucking two hop counts out of peoples traces. It would penalize everyone by two hops or at least one hop (if they hit one Yagi only), but of course we don’t want it to do that if at all possible.
I’m very happy with my install except for the mounting tape that holds the lido mount in place with my control head on it. I’m making a video trying different tapes etc.
