I remember when I used to walk between the stoves on No4, during slagging off. I am surprised that I still have lungs left. At some stages you had to stand still because you couldn't see where you were walking because of the fumes and smoke. Does Ray Earl still sell Salmon ?
Did you work on the blast furnaces? When it was LTV? I was a blast furnace supervisor from 1998 to 2001. LTV went bankrupt and closed, I believe in 2002.
Very interesting. I graduated in 72 and went to the Royal Exchange design office of BSC in central Middlesbrough. One of my first jobs was to detail repairs to the top of the skip hoist to No 4 Ferro Manganese furnace. When the office was closed and transferred to the Coatham hotel in Redcar , it was simply too far to travel, so I found another job. Ironically later I did design work for the 14 metre blast furnace at Redcar, which is about to be demolished.
It’s really sad that there’s barely any trace of this industry left on Teesside now
