'Black 5' 45212 coasts through the East Midlands on 'The Peaks Express' & bonus footage - 27/10/24
'Black 5' 45212 coasts through the East Midlands on 'The Peaks Express' - 27/10/24. All footage filmed on Wednesday 23rd & Sunday 27th October 2024.
The Railway Touring Company ran 'The Peaks Express' railtour on Sunday 27th October with 'Black 5' No. 45212 at the helm. The tour originated at Preston before heading down to Manchester in order to join the scenic Hope Valley Line towards Sheffield. Here the tour looped south to Chesterfield so that it could take the Erewash Valley Line through Alfreton & Toton towards Derby. After a relatively short break in Derby the tour immediately headed north back to Chesterfield and bypassed Sheffield to rejoin the Hope Valley Line and retrace it's route back to Preston. The 'Black 5' is first captured coasting up the 1-in-90 gradient at Chinley in glorious lighting. Unfortunately, the 'Black 5' was following closely behind a late running Northern unit, typical! A quick chase was then made to Staveley to see 45212 through the rolling countryside. Finally, in the fading light, the final shot of 45212 sees it speeding out of Milford Tunnel on the return working towards Chesterfield, albeit with the diesel providing most of the power. Not one of the best days I've had on the mainline but still an interesting concept to add variety from the stock railtours of recent years.
In addition, some bonus clips of 'S160' No. 6046 on the Churnet Valley Railway are included from earlier on in the week which were not quite long enough to make it into their own video.

@@SimonTog Thank you!
Great video as always Thomas. Kind regards, Jake.
Thanks Jake. Hopefully, it's a better quality video now that I've invested in some better editing equipment! Kind regards, Thomas
Nice Footage there Thomas off 45212 in action
@lnerrules-iw6ry Thanks. I had hoped for some better performances from 45212, but you don't always get what you want! Kind regards, Thomas

Great job! It was a pleasure meeting you there. Greetings from southern germany 😊👍
Thanks, it was brilliant to meet you too. I hope you had a good day at the Worth Valley on Sunday. Kind regards, Thomas
Nicely filmed mate!! Have to catch up soon The GCR is always a good one
Thanks, it's been a while hasn't it? Although I probably should've gone up to the Worth Valley, the videos I've seen of the Terrier are superb. Kind regards, Thomas
Nice Footage there Thomas. Like the Hall and Manor double heading though
@lnerrules-iw6ry Thanks, that double-header was the highlight of the day. Although, I probably would've been better off going up to the Worth Valley, its getting so hard to create a good video at the GCR with all the noise and lack of shots - I had to bin a fair few of them! Kind regards, Thomas
@@MaximumPressureSteam That's true. I got some good footage at the KWVR and the Terrier sounded superb especially with the Southern Stock and Demo freight
@@lnerrules-iw6ry I've seen some videos... the Terrier sounded brilliant!

@AndreiTupolev That's not even mentioning the mineral wagon rake they have either! Kind regards, Thomas
Great Video Thomas it looks like you were lucky with the Sun Unlike me today 😂😂😂. Regards, James.
Thanks James. Yeah, the sun was a definite benefit yesterday, but I've had a look at your video and you've got some really good shots. It looks like there were some better performances today, especially from the Manor. Kind regards, Thomas

Thanks James, It was nice to finally meet you too. Hopefully, we will see each other around more often 👍. Kind regards, Thomas
Quality stuff again Thomas. Thank you as always.
Nice Footage there Thomas off the Gala. Really like the footage of Bahamas though
Thanks, I agree with you there. Especially that run at Rifle Range, it really showed off the power of the loco. Kind regards, Thomas
Get Bahamas on the Moors on the 1 in 49 grade to Goathland, that will be even better:)
It definitely would, but we've got a Bulleid and a Hall to look forward to for next weekend!
Oh definitely looking forward to that
Great video as always -kind regards Ewan
Thanks Ewan, I think I did quite well considering the weather conditions yesterday! Kind regards, Thomas

Excelente.Muchas gracias.
Thank you.
Hi, I have a question, how do you get to the location for the class 31 shots and also the P3 shots, I know where the steps are for going under the bridge near the river but would like to know how to get to the other location shots mentioned. Thanks in advance.
For the Class 31 shot, as you come down the path from Beck Hole Road there should be a fence you can climb just to the left of the gate. Follow along the fencing until you reach the shot, it is very overgrown with ferns though. For the P3 shot, go through the gate and there should be an informal path along the fencing to your right. Follow this until you reach a stone wall and then carefully descend to the shot. I hope this helps, feel free to ask any more questions. Kind regards, Thomas
@@MaximumPressureSteam Is this the path that leads to the steps to go under the bridge with the footbridge and the river?? If it's the path I think it is?
@Daniel-4498 Yes that's right.
Great video. Shame I missed this event, looked like a lot of fun x
Thanks, I can't wait to see what they come up with for next year! Kind regards, Thomas
Great Video as always Thomas I was tempted to go to this Gala but I decided to do the Great Central instead last weekend. Regards,James

Great video as always Thomas. Kind regards, Jake
Thanks Jake. I hope your final shot of Bahamas' non-stop run went alright after I had left. Kind regards, Thomas.

Thanks Dylan, I probably would've missed the second shot of Bahamas if it wasn't for you! Kind regards, Thomas.
great video (the shot of Kent No2 on the goods is brilliant in my opinion) great speaking with you -kind regards Ewan
Thanks Ewan, you and your brother were great company yesterday. Me and Jake were really pleased with that shot of Kent No. 2, we both thought it was going to shut off at any minute, but thankfully it didn't! Kind regards, Thomas
Nice Footage there Thomas. Like the footage of Bahamas on the freight
Thanks. That shot of Bahamas was certainly the highlight of the day. Kind regards, Thomas
@@MaximumPressureSteam Oh definitely
Excellent footage there Thomas off the Moors.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Kind regards, Thomas
I would never want to be in the end of a more than 8 coaches long train , you can't hear the steam engine 😢
Wonderful coverage on show, I love the variety of scenic locations this line has to offer. Lovely to see 5239 & 7827 at work, the 'Manor' certainly gave some great displays up the banks! I'm headed down south in a couple of weeks, so hopefully I can get a shot from the DSR on my travels; fingers crossed! I was at the SVR yesterday for a spot of filming, the highlight was 4930 giving it some welly up the 1 in 100 past Hay Bridge; a great soundtrack accompanied by a ton of claggy exhaust! Fantastic to see the 'Hall' paired up with a matching GWR rake too, I'd been waiting some time to see that! If you could check out my footage, that'd be most appreciated; please don't feel obligated though. Kind regards, Adam 🙂
Thanks Adam. I hope you enjoy your upcoming visit to the English Riviera, I certainly enjoyed mine! I'll make sure to take a look at your video later. Kind regards, Thomas
Used to love catching this train from Paignton to Churston and then the bus to Greenway. Often did it up to 5 times a year with many others. But since 2020 it is no more. Only way to visit Greenway is by car if your lucky with the pre booking parking. What a wasted opportunity by both the steam train company and the national trust to get people out of their cars and not clog the very narrow roads. It worked before why not reinstate it.
It's such a shame isn't it. Nowadays, it's just seen a steam train ride rather than a heritage experience. It's turned into more of a business than a heritage railway now. Kind regards, Thomas
