Making of the Indian Constitution: Procedure
The making of the Indian Constitution was a historic process that laid the foundation of modern India. The drafting of the Constitution began after India gained independence on August 15, 1947. A Constituent Assembly, consisting of 299 members, was established to frame the Constitution. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, known as the "Father of the Indian Constitution," chaired the Drafting Committee.
The Assembly conducted extensive debates, spanning 165 days over nearly three years (from December 9, 1946, to November 26, 1949). The Constitution incorporated ideas from various global frameworks, including the British parliamentary system, American federal structure, and Irish directive principles.
On November 26, 1949, the Constitution was adopted, and it came into effect on January 26, 1950, marking India’s transition into a sovereign, democratic republic. The document, with 395 articles and 8 schedules at the time, became the longest written constitution in the world.
