F150 To The Rescue During High Winds In California
My normal routine is to use the F150 to charge my rack mount batteries to 100% once I arrive home from work. The batteries are usually around 70% when I get home and it takes maybe 2 hours to get to 100% using the EG4 Chargeverter. I was going out to unplug my truck as usual but this time I noticed that the lights were out in my neighborhood.

    Thanks for the video. I have researched this with NEC code, and you are correct. Once this is used for direct connection to your breaker panel via an interlock, it has to be a floating neutral because your panel is already bonded.

    Now your toaster can kill you if there is a fault. NEC code says generators are to bonded. The only time you have to worry about grounding is when using a transfer switch. Then a ground rod is needed for the generator. Your literally playing with fire

      WOW GREG…, WOW!!!! I purposely never show how my generator is directly connected to my house, because this video is pertaining to basic “ground to neutral bonding with a generator connected to a house”. But, I do have a question…, Is a generator interlock kit installed on a breaker panel considered a “transfer switch”????

    • @gregmay2155
      @gregmay2155 9 днів тому

      @GeraldsLyfeProjects No it is not. They are two completely different connections that work two completely different ways. Judging by the size and brand of your generator I assume your using an interlock. It also doesn't matter how you are directly connecting to your house. NEC code says ALL generators are to be bonded. Unless you think you know more than the engineers that determine codes. Which also is unlikely by the way you pronounce "continuity". I can also tell by how new and shiny your meter is that you just bought it and are likely to get yourself, a family member, or a friend electrocuted. Good luck

      Nothing wrong with that but it should be noted that, IF the portable generator is to be used as a standalone, like to power corded tools, devices, appliances such as that dangerous toaster, then the generator needs to be bonded. IF you use the generator as backup power for the house and you a have a service panel / meter and or a sub panel / breaker box in the house and one of those is bonded, then the generator needs to be a floating neutral, not bonded. Any body pulling a NEC code from a google search needs to actually research the full NEC Code pertaining to the different types of generators and the different uses.

    Gerald, I've got this exact same grid tied inverter, except mine is branded Solar City (since absorbed by Tesla....). We bought a house and the grid-tied, and leased, solar system was already here. We inherited the lease and pay Tesla a monthly bill. Sadly nothing we can do about that yet. We want more solar and battery storage, however. Did you have to get a professional installer or permits to get the SolArk installed to "talk" with the grid-tied system? I am hoping to be able to do most of the work DIY. Feels like anything I do that is going to touch the grid-tied system is going to require a permit.

    Can be done, but the math seems faulty. You chose to purchase a $500 chargeverter so you could charge your batteries while selling power back to the grid. And you use the F-150 to run the chargeverter. Thus, basically using one battery to charge another. At some point the F-150 needs to be recharged. I’m going be to surprised that: when the sun is out that the Sol-Ark will power the house load, charge the F-150, charge the batteries, AND still have sufficient excess to sell back to the grid. (I believe) The F-150 can be connected to the Sol-Ark to power a house and recharge the batteries without the chargeverter.

    • @GeraldsLyfeProjects
      @GeraldsLyfeProjects 18 днів тому

      I think that I have made at least 1 or 2 videos addressing all of your statements. But you did not ask any questions…, like “Are you charging the F150 for free?” The answer is “Yes”. I charge for FREE while I’m at work. If you check my latest video, you’ll see why I’m connecting the F150 to the Chargeverter instead of connecting directly to the Sol Ark: ua-cam.com/video/JFNTgoBFv6s/v-deo.htmlsi=27Rgbz8dyv_AyPB_ But I’ll explain it so that everyone that may have read your statements will understand. The F150’s Pro Power Onboard is only rated for 30 amps or 7,200 watts which limits me to 30 amps for my house loads if directly connected to the Sol Ark 15k. However, by connecting the F150 directly to the batteries using the EG4 Chargeverter, I now have: 50 amps/12,000 watts (No Solar) 75 amps/18,000 watts for 5 sec. (No Solar) Up to 62.5 amps/15,000 watts (With Solar) Up to 100 amps/24,000 watts for 10 sec. (With Solar) So, when I get home from work, it’s just like turning on the SUN again…, but at night! Thanks for the video. Do you need to do anything special to keep the Sol Ark and Chargeverter from charging at the same time? I assume the Sol Ark is using closed loop comms and the Chargeverter charges by voltage?

    • @GeraldsLyfeProjects
      @GeraldsLyfeProjects 27 днів тому

      Yes, the closed loop communication is maintained between the Sol Ark and the eFlex batteries. The voltage is used to either maintain or charge the batteries. The Chargeverter is connected to the Victron box and then to the bus bars of the battery rack. I usually only hook up the Chargeverter at night when there’s no solar and the batteries are around 60-70% charge. So, I don’t have to make any adjustments on the Sol Ark. Even with Solar during the daylight hours, the capacities are: Sol Ark 15k- 275 amps Batteries 105 amps/each (discharge & charge) Rack bus bars 500 amps/each Victron dist. Bus bar 1.000 amps The EG4 Chargeverter’s capacity is only 100 amps but I’ve only seen it get to maybe 97 amps. Thanks For The Comment!

    Just inherited the same one. Thank you. Doing the same to my house. What all can you run off yours? I have a carrier 3 ton heat pump. Any issues with the total harmonic distortion? I hear its high on this particular model.

    • @GeraldsLyfeProjects
      @GeraldsLyfeProjects Місяць тому

      Yes, the total harmonic distortion for this generator is rated as high as 23% which is not good for sensitive electronics. The WGEN9500 was able to start and run my 3.5 ton air conditioner but not on the 1st initial try. The 2nd try didn't require as much starting amperage which allowed the air conditioner to run. However, you might say that I am cheating, because I am really just routing the generator's power through a Sol Ark 15k Inverter to mostly charge the rack mounted batteries in my solar system.

    I found your other video where you show how to set up the two wire relay. That’s cool. I’m still interested in your feedback on the THD % though. I have heard that some folks with EG4 inverters have had issues when running non-inverter generators a.k.a. “dirty power “ generators.

    • @GeraldsLyfeProjects
      @GeraldsLyfeProjects Місяць тому

      WOW…, 23% “Total Harmonic Distortion”…, I did not know that! I guess that is testament to the “Quality, Workmanship & Consistency” of the Sol Ark 15K in comparison to the other “Hybrid Inverters”. The Westinghouse wgen9500 starts at around 64hz with NO LOAD and as I start to put loads on the generator the frequency lowers, I can monitor the “Total Harmonic Distortion” of the wgen9500 generator n the Sol Ark 15k’s battery screen (located in the lower, middle part of the screen). Right around 50% of the wgen9500’s normal running capacity, it remains close to 60hz. In addition, The Sol Ark 15k’s “TIME OF USE” further allows for a more consistent “Total Harmonic Distortion” by allowing me to send most the wgen9500’s load to charging the batteries (which is a consistent and easily maintained load) while I lower load requirements to the house using the Leviton LWHEM-2 to shut off non essential circuits. For example 4,000 watts to charging the batteries and maintain less than or equal to 1,000 watts to the house loads until the sun comes out or the clouds dissipate. HOWEVER, THE EG4 CHARGEVERTER HAS MADE ALL OF THAT…, “A THING OF THE PAST!!” I’ll be putting out a video on the EG4 Chargeverter soon. Thanks For The Comment And Keep’em Comin!!

    I found your other video where you show how to set up the two wire relay. That’s cool. It’s probably cheaper to just have a battery tender to keep everything charged and ready to go versus burning 20 minutes of gas each week. The real benefit is having the ability for the generator to self start when the batteries reach a certain level. I know you briefly mentioned what it might look like if it were running at night. That would be a cool video add-on to actually see that demo when you exceed the output of the generator. Keep the videos coming you’re showing content that no one else is.👍

      I’m using a Westinghouse wgen9500 but you can use any “Transfer Switch Ready” portable generator which means the generator has a connector with 7 to 9 pins. You’ll have to figure out which pins start and stop the generator. The Westinghouse generators are NOT “true 2 wire start/stop” generators. I had to purchase a GSCM Mini to make it work. But, I think the Duromax and Genmax generators only require one wire each for 2 pins for their 2 wire start/stop to work. Thanks so much for making this! I have a Sol-Ark 15K too (it's how I found your video!) and I'm hoping to find a way to disconnect neutral from the grid when flipping over to the truck, like you mention around the 9 minute mark. I'm not an electrician either and I'm not sure about disconnecting the ground from the truck. From what I understand, the purpose of the bond is to force the fault current to flow back through the truck, which might not happen if the truck is not grounded? The issue is the 4 wire double throw transfer switches I've found are sbout 3x the cost. Maybe worth it I'm not sure. Anyways thanks again for making this and explaining how the truck snd house are wired together I really appreciate it.

    Thanks For The Comment!! I did not modify the 30 amp cord coming from the Lightning to the 30 amp inlet box. Most of the inlet boxes come with a 2 wire grounding bus bar and a green wire already attached to one of the bus bar connections. I connected the ground wire coming from the Sol-Ark to the other bus bar connection. I did NOT connect the ground from inlet socket to the bus bar connections because the Lightning has GFCI protection to shut off it’s power in case of a ground fault. I connected the Lightning to a transfer switch that switches from grid power to the Lightning and then feeds the grid connection of the Sol-Ark. I AM NOT AN ELECTRICIAN! So, please consult with an electrician and always safety first!

    Nice setup. How much battery storage do you have and what batteries did you go with?

    Excellent setup. On the cable between lightning to house, did you make this? Did you use the ground wire or left it on connected on this cable? Also do you have the sol-ark configured not to backfeed the grid or are you connecting the ford input as a generator connection on the sol-ark?

      I did not make the cord. The ground is not connected to the receptacle or the house’s ground. I have a separate video on how to connect the Pro Power Onboard to a house. I setup the Sol Ark 15k with the generator connected to the grid. So, the Sol Ark 15k will not sell back to the grid. Check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/Nrnforx1uFI/v-deo.htmlsi=zx7taexwX2Rxychx
