Swifts of Hope and the St John Eye Hospital
St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group is the oldest and only charitable provider of expert eye care in the Middle East. It transforms lives by saving sight and treating patients regardless of ethnicity, religion or the ability to pay.
In 2016 the Eye Hospital Group embarked on a creative venture with renowned sculptor Mark Coreth. The result was a beautiful and thought-provoking work of art in bronze. Described as a ‘beacon of hope’, a gnarled and ancient olive tree bustling with majestic swifts stands proudly in the Muristan Clinic Garden.
This film is a recording of an online talk that was given on 24 March 2021 and has two parts. In the first part, Dr Ahmad Ma’ali, CEO Eye Hospital Group, talks about the historic foundations of the Eye Hospital and the achievements and challenges faced by its expert team today. In the second part artist Mark Coreth speaks with Dr Matthew Glozier, about the inspiration for the Swifts, and his reflections on this moving project that now has a global reach.
Mark Coreth is an internationally acclaimed artist (the lifesize sculpture of Frankel at Royal Ascot, unveiled by HM the Queen is among his work). He can count many of the Royal Family, as well as the Natural History Museum in London, amongst his collectors.
Dr Matthew Glozier is the Honorary Archivist for St John Ambulance Australia (NSW), and one of three expert authors of an upcoming book on the history of the St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group.

What would the past have been like in the Middle Ages if the future had happened before? Inspired by this statement, TECHNO MEDIOEVO: Age of Future Reloaded presents the work of a contemporary art collective. Many of the works have been created specifically for this exhibition - as a conceptual riposte to this question, and as a physical response to the environment of the medieval St John's Gat...

The Broken Bed, conservation talk at the Museum of the Order of St John

On loan to the Museum of the Order of St John is an intriguing oil sketch after William Hogarth, depicting “The Broken Bed” from his “Industry and Idleness” series. The painting forms an interesting link to the narrative of St John’s Gate, home to the Museum and also the childhood home of William Hogarth. On 25th November 2015, Claire Shepherd, a painting conservator, discussed the conservation...

THROUGH THE EYES OF A RED CROSS STATESMAN
How could you not like this video. Sweet and informative. St John Badgers . . . about the cutest thing I've seen.
Thanks, for a great video!!
I'm part of newark st john's and i'm impreased by the history!
I saw a templar knight in 2009 he had tattoos under his eyes and on his arms he had long hair and a long beard big burly sob he told me years ago when he was in the trenches Satan came to him and told him if he wanted to live forever come with him and he said he put his mark right here he pointed at his right hand and he said he's been around ever since that was over a thousand years ago I could tell you the rest of the story but it's rather long my friend Mike saw him as well he showed up at my friends security guard job he was sitting there when we got there in the middle of the night and no this guy didn't work for the company either so my question is what were the tattoos under his eyes and on his arms they were religious tattoos markings looked Celtic style that would be the "battle of the trenches 11th century" I still have a image of what that guy looked like in my mind the tattoos he had were green they were religious or battle tattoos never seen anything like them they were nothing like tattoos today I believe he was a Celtic crusader
someone feed her
im Italian and recently i discovered the traditional tatoos made for the pilgrims who were visiting the holy house at Loreto (around the XVI century). The so called "tatuaggi lauretani" are another dimostration of the strong spiritual bondage made by the tatoos
I was a cadet as a teenager. I bet the uniform I wore is innehat museum.
It is nice to hear about English nurses who played their part, during the great war, otherwise knowing as WW1. Bless them.
My grandmother was a VAD nurse. The suggestion that nurses were not on the front line was not true, they were shelled, gassed and bombed. The German idea of Total War meant that even hospitals were targets. The women ambulance drivers had to drive into even more danger. Women medical staff came from ALL OVER THE EMPIRE not only England.
@@0ldb1ll Hi. That's really cool! You must be very proud of your Grandma. Did she care for many wounded soldiers?
Thank you for these video.
The emblem looks like the knights hospitalliar
This is the knights hospitalliar... just in modern times they don’t need knights for crusades anymore

I don't expect some wealthy families.. volunteered their wealth.
Be prepared the audio doesn't start until :29 and then stops abruptly at 2:59. Very interesting but not very well presented, sorry. : (
Shame the uniform is so terrible now, and the restructuring ruined the tradition of the uk SJA
Out of interest, what is it you don’t like about the uniform?
You could always show up in full medieval robes and Crosses lol.
Demographic replacement on full display
Proud to be a member of the St John Ambulance
Wow
Boring
Lest we forget.
Exactly, Gregory. May we never forget. Unfortunately, the worthless generation we have today will not care about what these wonderful people did for us all. We owe a great debt to the Greatest Generation. May they never be forgotten.
