    Ah yes, summer of 1973, painting the hallway of my parents house. My uncle lent me an old table top radio with a large speaker and every time WABC 77 (on your radio dial) played the intro to Bad Bad Leroy Brown, the hallway rocked!

    Around 2009 I wore a Jim Croce T-shirt to my former workplace (Pennington, NJ Post Office). One of my former co-workers...a mail carrier...said "Did you know that Maury's family lives right here in Pennington?". I was stunned and caught completely off guard. He told me the address and I decided to visit whomever resided there. I brought along with me one of the Jim Croce Gold Records that was in my collection presented to the legendary BILL DRAKE of KHJ Fame. (Biggest TOP 40 radio station in California). I also brought along a Radio Show on Vinyl that had a photo of Jim and Maury playing at the final concert before the crash on the album cover. I was greeted by Maury's Mom who I think was at least 90 years old at the time. She welcomed me into her home and took me into the family room. All of Maury's Gold Records were hanging on one of the walls....Surprisingly the particular one I had brought with me (Called a DISC AWARD) was not present. I gave her the Radio Show LP as a gift. She hadnt seen any photos from the last concert so she was quite moved. We sat there talking for about 2 hours. She told me she heard about Maury's death from a Neighbor who had seen it on the news the next morning. I thought to myself how screwed up is that to find out that way that your son had died. She sang me one of Maury's songs. I couldnt believe how SHARP this woman was to be that old and to have such an amazing memory. The story sadly doesnt end so well. One of her daughters came home from shopping I think and was "disturbed" that her Mother was sitting with some Dude nobody knows on the couch. So basically I didnt feel "welcome" anymore and I left. Fast forward a year or two later and I got into a conversation with one of Maury's other sisters....whichever one runs his website. She told that my visit caused quite an uproar within the family and a whole bunch of drama followed. Certainly not my intention. I'll always be grateful I had those hours to spend with Maury's Mom. Im sure she has long since passed on. Just thought I would share my story with other Jim/Maury fans

    I've said this before and I'll say it again, Maury helped make the "Croce" sound. His lead work was always enjoyable to hear. He knew just how to enhance the composition and putting the right lead in the right places. I truly enjoyed his work. Be proud of him!

I again met him at Jim's tribute concert some 12 years ago at Upper Darby H.S. where he performed... memorable night...also had the pleasure of meeting Maury's brother and sister, that was the highlight for me.

    Consistently superb sound on every record he's ever produced. All the Jim Croce albums had such beautiful sound. I was reading an article on the Universal fire today, the disaster that destroyed millions of master recordings, and just about everyone who had been on ABC/Dunhill had their masters wiped out. But I looked and happily did not see ABC's Jim Croce on the list. My guess is that Cashman and West purchased the masters for their Lifesong label and took them elsewhere. Good guess?

    Geez, how cool is that!!! This tune got me my first run-in with trouble with a capital "T". I was in Mrs. Copeland's kindergarten class in fall of '73 and this song is playing everywhere, all the time! So naturally I am a 4 year old kid belting it at the top of his lungs in class... Except of course the lyric contains a very edgy (for 1973!) naughty word... And Mrs. C is Reverend Copelin's wife and... Yeah that didn't go over too well. But who can forget what a firestorm this tune was on AM back in the day. And Tommy's intro set it all off. Thanks for sharing this. John

      You're not the only person to think that about Ovation guitars. I've never understood why anyone would play one. To me, they all sound horrible. no matter who's playing and they always have. Even Glen Campbell couldn't get them to sound even half way decent. I really just don't get it.

    • @jfq722
      @jfq722 6 років тому

      Jim and Maury decided to use the Ovations for their touring just to save the wear and tear on the Martins. It was NOT because Ovations sounded or stayed in tune better. The only things Ovations did better than other guitars was withstand beatings.

    • @robertbrucefan2673

      That was Jim's and Maury's style. Lover's Cross shows that very well. Very intricate playing. Beautiful. We lost the chance to hear some beautiful songs. Croce music isn't dated. It could be from any era, and Jim's voice is great. He seems sometimes to have 2 voices. One he sings Rapid Roy and Five Short Minutes and the other he sings Time in A Bottle and These Dreams etc. Absolutely great. I've been listening to Jim and Maury since I was 15. I'm 60 now. Gingerbreadd was an excellent album by Maury. His sister Mary sent it to me. Sad how young he was.

    I few years back I was in contact with Maury's sister Mary on her website. Very nice person and informative. I asked her the question if Maury and Jim recorded with the Ovation guitars that they were often photographed with. She said that the recordings were never done with Ovations and that the Ovations were used on the road because they took a better beating. I found that interesting. My only problem is Photograph & Memories and New York's Not My Home still sound like Ovations. Any input?
