Really cool video interesting discussion
Thank you! I appreciate the positive feedback.
no far from the best but better than Rises which was garbage
Thanks for commenting. Don’t disagree. Rises did not work and was a big disappointment
@@lowkeyclassicmovies yeah Rises was a real mess, I enjoyed the Batman but it didnt really need that third act which drags it down
I watched a movie and I thought that those cops were dumb the entire time 😂
Lol
Double Impact is supposed to be just a guy film, no logic or rhyme or reason except for action, guns, hot women, awesome soundtrack, booze, drugs and badass Martial Arts.
Thanks for commenting. It was just so absurd it was amusing to me
@@lowkeyclassicmovies I spoke with the actress who played Kara in Double Impact, she told me that she slipped a listening device on her without her knowing and with a tracking device to track their base near the end. (For the record she HATED filming a girl on girl scene.)
Good video, i agree a lot about most movies being in that 5-6 out of 10 range, but when you go to discussion about the movie people jump to extremes way too often. I use scale slightly different: 1 through 4 is different levels of bad; 5-6 is mediocre and decent; 7 through 10 is different levels of good; that way i have 4 stars for each bad and good, and 2 stars for mixed reactions. And my rating system is as follows: 1 - Abysmal. A kind of movie you laugh at and not laugh with. Also just painful to get through (example: Home Alone 4) 2 - Terrible. The movie is functional, but very dull and fails on each level. The biggest compliment i can give to it is that it's watchable (example: Dark Phoenix) 3 - Very bad. Fundamentally broken kind of movie. It provides some entertainment and has some glimmers of hope, but too many bad things about it and it's a head-scratcher. (example: Venom: Let There Be Carnage) 4 - Bad. Has some redeeming qualities and a vision, but falls short and ends up being underwhelming. (example: Alien 3) 5 - Mediocre. A mixed bag. Some good, some bad. Wouldn't say i wasted my time, but didn't left being quite satisfied either. (example: The Strangers) 6 - Decent. Enjoyable, while i'm aware of the issues the movie has, it's still a respectable effort. If i had to rewatch it for some reason, i wouldn't mind. (example: Equilibrium) 7 - Good. That's a solid film, which gets most things right. It's not groundbreaking, but it delivers and i would definitely recommend it. (example: Bronson) 8 - Great. A well-rounded kind of movie. Acting, script, premise, direction it has it all and it's thoroughly enjoyable. (example: Wind River) 9 - Amazing. Remarkably good, it sticks with me, it stands out among other movies, strong piece of filmmaking. (example: Memento) 10 - Masterpiece. Exceptionally well crafted movie, it transcends the genre, it changed the way i look at movies, and i think about it a lot (example: Chinatown)
Thanks for the detailed feedback. I continue to refine my thought process as I see more movies and apply my 1-10 scale.
This is a fantastic video, I have personally come to a very similar view of things. I started out rating things on a bell curve, because as a more stem minded person it just seemed like the appropriate thing to do. But my thoughts shifted over time for the same reason as yours, most people are going to naturally want to watch movies that are good. People know their own taste, generally, and are going to seek out things they think they will like while ignoring film that looks bad. If you were to watch every move that was ever made, the bell curve distribution would probably be moved to the left of center, partially because most of what people recommend and talk about is good stuff in the same way most people only listen to the top couple percentage of artists. But this would also be because you're watching a lot of content that doesn't interest you. I believe this is why when we rate things individually, a 3.5 or 7 should be a pretty good/average movie. 3 or 6 you still enjoy but maybe there's some flaws. 2.5 or 5, I personally use for content I'm apathetic to, and then below that is anything I didn't like or find to be good. I have 2's or 4's that I still found somewhat fun at moments, just didn't think were good. That's why my curve is similarly shifted to the right, where the largest category of ratings I give is a 3.5 or 7 and then less and less down to 5's or 10's. For me this feels like it gives a very natural way to approach the ratings for what I watch, and my ratings curve has remained fairly consistent overall. edit: Wanted to add that I think it's also a good idea overall to look at these ratings relative to other films in their categories, like a tier list, where it becomes easier to get a perspective on what makes that film the rating you gave it. That can often help you to see "oh, these all belong together because they're similar quality". For this reason my own curve isn't super tall, it's a bit shorter and spread out, because there's so much nuance and I'm always trying to find another 5 or 10.
Thanks for the compliment and thoughtful response. Even since I started this channel, my views have shifted a bit. I’m a bit harsher about movies that don’t bring much to the table. I had out more 2s and 3s than I used to
very insightful video
Thank you very much!
How I use the Star rating 5 stars = Perfection in Cinema 4 and a Half stars = Almost Perfection 4 Stars = Amazing 3 and a Half stars = Really Good 3 stars = Average 2 and a Half stars = Schlock Entertainment 2 stars = This is Really Bad 1 and Half stars = Awful 1 Star = Down Right Abysmal Half a Star = The Worst Thing in the Entire World and offers No value Whatsoever
Where is 2.5 stars for average movies? lol
Having 3 as “average” and 3.5 as “really good” seems weird. It doesn’t feel right seeing I gave a really good movie a 3.5.
I’m strict when I rate movies with the star rating. I personally feel that you have to be as objective as you can be. I’ve seen people give so many movies 4 and 5 stars and I feel well what’s the point in it all then?, if you’re going to do that. A 5 star movie to me is perfection, and even though I’ve still yet to see some classic movies I personally have only ever watched two movies that I’ve rated 5 stars, and they are The Shining and Goodfellas, those two movies are perfection. A 4 star movie to me is a fantastic movie but just doesn’t quite reach perfection levels to me. Movies that I’ve rated 4 stars are Jaws, Alien, Terminator 2, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Taxi Driver, Casino, Heat, Psycho, Django Unchained, The Exorcist, etc etc. They are all fucking phenomenal movies but they just don’t quite hit perfection to me. I have rated two movies with 4 and half stars that are just near the tip of perfection in The Exorcist 3 which is better than the original, and Primal Fear. Those two movies hit so close to perfection but not fully perfect. For me The Shining and Goodfellas are perfection in Cinema.
I think movie reviewing is by its nature subjective. They are, at their root, emotion delivery systems. The key to reviewing them is to be true to yourself and hopefully consistent. I think there are objective aspects to movies but there are movies with objective flaws that I love and well made movies I didn’t enjoy very much.
It does irritate me when movie reviewers love or hate everything. I good set of ratings have some sort of bell curve
i agree that a lot of people give away their 4 stars and 4.5 stars too easily. But i disagree that 5 stars should be only reserved for a couple perfect movies, 5/5 stars is something i'd say is a masterpiece of this media and of a genre its within. Terminator 2 is an action masterpiece, The Thing is a horror masterpiece, Goodfellas and Godfather are mob movies masterpieces. It might seem like having 30-40 five stars is too much, but if you consider a person has seen 1000 or 2000 movies, then the ratio makes it look like these 5 star movies are truly one of a kind
They would have gotten away with if they used another witness that doesn't know them or the suspect.
That’s right
FANTASTIC Movie!! A MUST see!!! ❤😊
Thanks for watching my review!Glad u liked the movie
I used to have a 10-1 rating system. Now its this. 5 - my favourite and most flawless: Masterpieces. 4.5 - extraordinary with littlest flaws and misses: Excellences. 4 - wonderful with minimal flaws: Gems. 3.5 - amazing with perceptible flaws: Merits. 3 - good with highly apparent flaws: Solids. 2 - highly flawed/bloated: Fodder. 1 - garbage: Garbage. Unrated - the worst film of all time: Garbage Juice.
I like sticking with whole numbers. The psychological difference between a 5 and 10 pt scale is interesting. I find that is sounds better to me to hear a movie got a 7 out of 10 versus a 3.5 out of 5, even though they are the same!
I think it is difficult to rate a movie without any kind of emotional attachment, but omitting a category for enjoyability must help. This is the difference between favour (subjective); and greatness (objective)
Thanks for commenting! All I was trying to do is give use a shared vocabulary for expressing our subjective opinions about the movies we see. Movies can have objective qualities but whether those qualities are important to us in enjoying a movie is still subjective.
Movies are art. I find that trying to rate a film solely on its objective qualities, which may or may not be important or effective depending on the person and how they are used, a bit tedious and flawed. Nobody cares about your ratings as much as you do, so I think if you aren't factoring your own appreciation and enjoyment into it you're not being true to yourself. But it's up to you how strongly your own personal enjoyment affects your rating.
I agree! Rates are good for quick communication, and you can expand on that with arguments. I also prefer the clean 1 to 10 scale. Pitchfork goes hardcore by adding decimals 😅
Thanks for the feedback. Rather than add decimals, I note what the next closest grade is. So, if a rating is 6, then I will note the range is a 6-7 or a 5-6. That way, I know if it was closer to a 7 or a 5
Good movie
Your review can’t be further off
Ouch!
When I talk about movies, shows, books, games, etc, to my friends. I just put them into tiers: Tier 6: Dogsh*t(don't watch) Tier 5: Forgettable(had decent ideas but failed as a whole) Tier 4: Mixed(might be worth seeing, but wouldn't recommend to others or hype it up) Tier 3: Solid(worth checking out, probably better if you're already into that particular genre) Tier 2: Spectacular(definitely worth seeing, resonates with me) Tier 1: Iconic(hit me deep down, and most likely inspirational to me, whether it comes down to writing fiction or my personal approach to life like specific mindsets, interests, or hobbies)
That’s pretty much covers it. Tiers 3&4 are the ones I expand a bit because they covers a lot of movies. For me, the majority. Do you know about the podcast I have on this channel? Look under Live content. Just did the latest one and it is posted with chapters for each movies.
See you at the party Richter
I very very much love the reboot...only because of Kate as Lori...she is so hot and badass. Just love her, she is such a great character that i very much adore
Understandable. Kate is great. And there are parts I like. even with my criticism, it is still watchable for me.
@@lowkeyclassicmovies Well i am watching that movie 24/7 haha. But to be honest i am only paying attention when Lori is on screen
With TOTAL RECALL and ROBOCOP, it amazes that anyone could think it would be a good idea to remake any Paul Verhoeven film. Not only remake them but to do them straight and humourless. So bizarre.
Man, that Robocop movie was horrible! I was stunned how bad it was. With Total Recall, I saw the vision but it just didn’t work. Filmmakers need to recognize that remaking Robocop and Total Recall is like remaking Citizen. Kane . That’s what you are taking on
The fact that you have last Boy Scout in the background got you a sub I love old movies and this one is underrated af loved it
Thanks. Definitely a low-key classic. Peak Willis and Wayans.
I literally saw this today - it was fine for it’s time The duo worked well - both were great
Thanks for watching my video. The thumbnail title is a bit exaggerated for clicks. The movie wasn't unpleasant to watch but I did think the plot was a silly mess. 2Pac had good chemistry with Belushi, but his overall role was smaller than I expected.
My Rating System: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ = Something that I think is worth a 5 star rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 1/2 = Something that I think is worth a 4 and a half star rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐ = Something that I think is worth a 4 star rating ⭐⭐⭐ 1/2 = Something that I think is worth a 3 and a half star rating ⭐⭐⭐ = Something that I think is worth a 3 star rating ⭐⭐ 1/2 = Something that I think is worth a 2 and a half star rating ⭐⭐ = Something that I think is worth a 2 star rating ⭐ 1/2 = Something that I think is worth a 1 and a half star rating ⭐ = Something that I think is worth a 1 star rating 1/2 = Something that I think is worth a half-star rating
Lol
I liked hearing about how your rating system is done, mine is sorta similar but allows me to categorize a film, on being amazing to terrible in technicality, while leaving space to be specific with how I felt about it. for me 8-10 is classics, 10 beings films with a profound impact on me, while 9 being maybe just as good but didn't reach that personal spark you'd need for a 10. 8 out of 10 is meaning I enjoyed it quite a fair amount and think the work in it is stellar, but there wasn't any peak of major enjoyment for me that stretches it into the higher scores. 5-7 are more run-of-the-mill movies, and the rating of 5 to 7 is purely on enjoyment, and allows a 7 being something I'd still recommend while it's being a newer film. while 2-4 are films are what I'd consider bad. the twist is usally a bad film that I give a 4, I usually enjoy more then the run of the mill films I give a 5. but this all really allows me to to add an extra layer on my rating system, so when looking back at it I cant really know what a number means. and for what 1 means, well... I try not to go there. In short I usually decide to rate a film on the 3 categories of technicality, then choose one of the three rating all based on how I felt.
I see what u are saying. Sometimes movies are very technically sound but not good otherwise. I will make a follow up about what I think goes into whether I like a movie, and how technically sound it is plays a role
@lowkeyclassicmovies Yes, this is an aspect I have thought about. Sometimes the whole is NOT as good as its parts. A movie could be well made in terms of cinema elements, but could still be unexciting, nonmemorable, or considered a bad/boring movie.
Your point "You should grade a lot of movies as 5s" is flawed. In order not to waste my time, I avoid mediocre or terrible movies. Usually, my established rule-of-thumb is, if it has less than 7 stars on IMDb, I'm not gonna watch it, unless it is controversial (i.e., probably a lot of unjustified downvotes) or a cult classic, ...or I'm just in the mood for something trashy to "cleanse my palate". Hence, most of the ratings I give are 6s to 9s, with 7 being most common.
I guess that if you miraculously only watch movies you end up liking, you may not rate many movies a 5. I can only speak from my own experience and even after figuring out what kind of movies I prefer, I see a fair number of average /mediocre/ok films. Sometimes, they just fail to deliver on their promise. Other times I’m trying out new creatives or subjects/genre not in my preference. I would contend that that there may be a lack of discernment if one would recommend every movie they ever see. You do mention rating things 6, which by my scheme is below a “recommend”, but just barely.
Thanks for commenting!
@@lowkeyclassicmovies Hey, thanks for replying as well. I guess I somehow adjusted my own rating scale to be "equivalent" to the IMDb ratings which I consult usually. Therefore, a 6 for me is already in "meh" territory; still enjoyable, but not really convincing. I also only very rarely give a 10; maybe once or twice a year. BTW, the reason I came across your video is that I wanted to harmonize my own rating scheme to be more consistent and fair, and I think it helped.
@@hymen0callis Thanks for the positive feedback! My recollection is that the imdb rankings are very condensed. The very best movies are maybe an 8.9 at most and absolutely terrible movies don't dip below 3.5. Tons of movies are between 6-7. On that scale, 6 or even 6.5 is an "average" movie score.
Used to have this mindset recently, but i started getting bored of movies that have a rating higher than a 5. Tbh, its the way you watch a movie that makes the movie. Whether its watching lawrence of arabia in 4k in a theater or watching g force at 2 am with drunk friends, any movie is enjoyable if you make it so
Great video!
Thanks!
Personally i marathoned 1-7 with an ex of mine abt 10yrs ago. Cant say i remembered much abt the series and i definitely didnt keep up with it. I had never even heard of jigsaw and spiral til after i watched saw x. I dont go to the movies/tv much, and i have lots of ad blockers, so when my partner asked me out on a halloween movie date and asked what was playing that id be interested in watching, i just picked saw because it sounded familiar. Went in basically blind, other than vague recollections of key moments from the early movies, thats it. And for that reason, i feel like i went in with the best circumstances possible. The opening didnt drag for me, i really enjoyed all the time we got to spend with jigsaw the person. Helped build character, motivation and empathy. But on the other hand, because the first half of the movie was so normal, to be honest, by the time he discovered hed been conned, id forgotten i was watching a horror movie, if that makes sense. Id kinda gotten into the mindset of it being a poorly-written drama? So when he starts kidnapping people, it was so jarring to me that i got physical whiplash. The first trap after the kidnapping, i was so unprepared i nearly passed out. And i dont normally have a weak stomach with horror movies. Perhaps some kind of mesh of shortening that long setup and easing viewers into the horror aspects wouldve been better?
That’s a very interesting perspective. The first part doesn’t drag at first but moreso once he started traveling. I found the slow walk through the facility in Mexico overdone. I also thought showing every person being captured was overkill there. It does shift and get intense fast with the forearm and then leg/marrow trap. I’m planning a follow up grading the traps with spoilers.
@@lowkeyclassicmovieslooking forward to it!
When you can watch a movie multiple times and never get bored of it, that's when you know it's a ten. For me that movie is Joker and Gladiator.
I usually say that for a 9 or a 10. There can be a very rewatch able movie that nevertheless has flaws that prevent them from being 10s. As a fan of the Die Hard movies, Die Hard 3 comes to mind as a 9.
Great video! For me it’s: 10 = Masterpiece 9 = Amaziing 8 = Great 7 = Good 6 = Okay 5 = Meh 4 = Bad 3 = Awful 2 = Terrible 1 = Disaster
Thank you for sharing that with me.
Wolf of wall street and John carpenters the thing, they live and Halloween. Are all 10 out of 10s for me and nightmare on elm street 2 , TMNT 3 and on her majesty's secret service will always be 1s for me
TMNT 3 turtles in time was pretty hideous.
@lowkeyclassicmovies yai get no enjoyment out of these 3 movies so I rate them 1s there not even fun bad a I think I was actually offended by TMNT 3 as a kid and notice the quality drop as a kid so that's saying something
@@StonedAge_TV I remember feeling the same way the first time I saw TMNT 3. Like, what happened? Also, did you ever notice that in TMNT 2 the turtles didn't use their weapons at all. The only weapons used were make-shift ones.

Both meg and meg2
I liked the first one. For me, it worked and was a borderline 6/7 out of 10. This one was more like a 3 or 4 out of 10.
the ridiculous aspects of the movie is the reason you go and see it. it is a movie meant to be fun almost like a cartoon.
There are places where the “ridiculous” worked. But, for me, ridiculous can go too far and takes all of the stakes of what is happening away. The movie turns into a corny cgi demo.
It’s a giant shark you’re not there for the story you’re there for the big ass shark killing things
I wouldn’t say I loved it but, all the tech aspects and the acting is very good. It’s not something I’d buy for my collection but, I’d still say a postive score.
Yeah, I don’t feel the need to own it either. But it was an excellent experience. And I could see it again easily

My Latest Movie Review: ua-cam.com/video/6p-LKWESqUs/v-deo.html; Latest How I Rate Movies: ua-cam.com/video/sYjVDQQ_MXU/v-deo.html
Not gonna post any 'spoilers' from the trailer here, but is the spoiler you're referring to in reference to a certain voice we hear asking - of all the men to cheat, you picked John Kramer? I suspect it is that, but if you think about it - it's not really a spoiler considering when Saw X takes place, between Saw and Saw II, and that certain character was present during those films.
What I was referring to was visual, but I think the same character. And the more I thought about it, the less concerned I was about it being a late in the movie spoiler. Apparently the still has been floating around even before the trailer drop. My general concern about visual reveals from the trailer remains though.
I recently started rating movies and I realized my ratings are flawed as I easily gets influenced from imdb ratings and other online reviewers. I was searching for a video on how to rate a movie efficiently and I think this video is the best. I appreciate it so much. I would love if you can make a video on giving examples on movies that are flawed in some ways and explanation on how to find flaws. Like what is missing in Die Hard 2 that you think it's not 10, but 8/9.
I appreciate the feedback. I will definitely work on one or more follow-ups
I really liked the perspective you offered about not being afraid to give movies fives. A lot of the time I end up dismissing movies as bad if they're not great and you make really good points about it being a gradient and it not being great but a 4-6 rating is a really natural place for a lot of movies to end up at.
Thanks for the feedback. It just seems very rare for people to just say a movie is ok/decent. Everything is called ‘good’ or ‘bad’. I see decent movies all the time
I haven’t seen any of these. Eventually I’ll dive into them though. I hear it’s a great franchise.
It’s a good action/espionage series.
I enjoyed it. It’s not an amazing movie but, compared to other stuff this year I didn’t think it was that bad.
There were definitely good pieces there, it just didn’t quite come together for me until the very end.
65 is a pointless movie - pitch black -jurassic w copy
Ouch. But pretty accurate this-crossed-with-that example. Have you seen Riddick? If you liked Pitch Black but maybe hated the 'chronicles' sequel, don't let that keep you from seeing Riddick. Not as good as Pitch Black, a classic, but very solid.
The comedy in this movie I didn’t get every joke but, there were some laughs for me. I wish the horror part was a little less goofy. It was a good one time watch for me. Subbed to your channel. Have a great week!
Thanks! I subscribed to you as well. Looking for fellow movie UA-camrs to learn from and maybe work with.
@@lowkeyclassicmovies sounds good man. I appreciate it as well. It’s all about networking and everyone has a certain style.
Yea this movie was kool pac did his thang tho he was be a touch notch actor...gridloc?¿?
☠️ st least your honest?
Ppl who really liked the first are definitely going to see this one. But some folks that felt like me might be hesitant and miss out. If they see this, maybe they will give it a try anyway
“I didn’t like their first one that much” -No one ever.
Lol
I would only recommend it if you want some good laughs.
Yeah it was pretty funny
Not a fan of the movies Hollywood bleeds them dry as much money as they can get
The fact that the majority of the box office comes from overseas definitely affects how they make these movies now.
