You would have been better pressure turning it. use a steel or ali plate up against your copper face with a dimple in the center then push a live revolving center in your tailstock up against it nice and tight, copper is a bugger to machine it is very grabby.

Hi Harold,Thanks for watching the video and your welcome moment BoilerMaking appears tobea Subject to be steered well clear of with many aspects of "Fit" unsure of with regard to making a successful boiler I am following two books One claims the tubeplate should be a tight fit in the barrel and the second advises a 3to 5 thousands of an inch gap between the components to allow for silver solder to penetrate along the full length of the joint I am also following the advice of a fellow member at my local club ( who now has two successful boilers to his credit) I hope I can stay the course and complete this boiler which would (I hope) give some idea of the ( FIT) and what they should look like. Have you experience at boiler building and the "Fit" of parts required and conducive to a successful boiler build Many thanks for commenting Andy G

Hi. I made all the parts for a Holmside boiler so it was complete ready to silver solder together, i did do some of the silver soldering but chickened out as I was using propane and reconned I was going to need a serious amount of BTU's especially when it came to the foundation ring. In the end I sold the engine, I'd got to many projects on the go as it was. I do wish you success with your Holmside especially the boiler, thank you for sharing your buld warts and all. Please don't take this as a negative, I think I probably gave up to easily.

Hi Martyn Thanks for watching and even more, thanks for commenting on the video as thecomments are very useful to myself and others Later in the project we will see my first attempt at a singer solder joint on what would appear to be the easiest joint to be made and how I struggle to perform it, so I do appreciate your concerns of many BTU's being required for the build especially as the build becomes a sizeable mass of copper A terrible shame you did not complete your build and end up with a running loco I take it you are still involved in the hobby and maybe even building another loco? Cheers Best wishes Andy G

Hi Andy. As far as the Holmside went I soldered the barrel to the firebox wrapper and soldered in the throat plate, using a higher temperature range silver solder so when I came to do other joints there would'nt be any risk of melting any previous joints. I had also soldered the firebox tube plate in and soldered the tubes in place. Then I got cold feet and chickened out. Yes I'm Model Engineering I'm just one of those who purchased castings while I was working for projects I'd liked to build during retirement, then realising I'd simply got to many. As far as other boilers go I did part build a 3" Atkinson steam lorry boiler but again chickened out when it came to putting the inner and outer assemblies together again the thought of how much heat I would need for the foundation ring worried me. However I had some help and that boiler has been finished and tested okay. I have a Speedy on going and a Tich which I am confident I can complete that boiler myself just need some good weather as I have to do my soldering outside. I'll follow you progess with interest good luck. Martyn. @@masterpiecesinminiature8299

Interesting but a little too detailed or slow...2 videos and still haven't touch the actual boiler..but hes doing a very detailed how to which is awesome

Hi Kenneth, Thanks for the comment, yes I appreciate it is slow, and hopefully detailed enough for "Novices" (like myself) to understand fully, what I am doing and hopefully why and how. I suspect there are a lot of models out there that have not been completed due to lack of a boiler being bought or built for it. Best Wishes. Andy G.

Fascinating series of videos highlighting what a labour of love building live steam is. Not to mention having a well tooled workshop 😊

Thanks John, Yes there is a lot involved but hopefully the series will save other hobbiests making the same mistakes I will probably make, thereby working safely, saving time and very importantly money. The formers I am currently describing will in some cases be available to purchase from Model Engineering Suppliers. The series will hopefully expose the "Art" of boiler making as being a great possibility of achieving. The "Fit" and tolerances will I hope be made clear, as this is probably one of the great fears, (for me at least).

Hi, Thanks Glen. Yes, again the Loco ran very well and really does look good with the "17 D Miniatures" coaches that she was hauling. And the weather again 'Made the Day'. Cheers.

Congratulations and well done on a great build... I did something (Slightly) similar when I converted the Bachmann body to the Hornby chassis, etc. I have many memoriies of the prototype(s) (45736) on the London-Holyhead runs along the North Wales Coast.

Thanks for the comment, I bet they were great days by the lineside but I bet the locos were not as clean back then. I will pass on your comments. Cheers

Lovely loco , bit Jerky , did it require some slider adjustments

Hi Harry, Thanks for commenting, "Sorry", not sure what you mean by Jerky. Do you mean slide valve when you say sliders. This Loco has piston valves on it, and we thought ran very well for it's out of the "shop" first steaming. Cheers.

Hi Kev, Fred is a nice Guy. He dropped the copper off personally while on delivery trips. Had a cuppa and a good chat. I would certainly recommend "Track Metals" to other Model Engineers Cheers. Andy G.

Looking forward to the construction videos but have to say I love the idea of the card mock up's (CAD I love it 😆), it really aids understanding the drawings for us non engineering types. Fortunately I did Tech Drawing at school hundreds of years ago 😂 so I have a very basic grasp of what you are explaining.

Hi thanks, Yes the cardboard mock up certainly make a drawing come to life if you are a bit vauge on things. Cheers.
