James was great for a long time and helped build huge success. That's the difference. If something had happened before getting really popular all of a sudden he'd have been let go too. But he was a powerhouse while building success. So he earned his spot among the rest of them, and wasn't just a hired gun. The loyalty and support from the rest of the group was well earned.

Shut up hating on him. Man the vocals in the 2000 on as i am etc were amazing. Just because he stopped being able to sing this means nothing. He still had an amazing voice. And still has a good one now. Listen to the music he is currently making. It's called getting older

Dream Theater did Master of Puppets live and completely sucked the life force out of it. Now, Black Hole Sun and did the same. Despite Rush having some heavier material than Dream Theater (and never being called metal) Dream Theater is called metal. The piano ballads are real metal! 😅

James Labrie made Dream Theater the Dream Theater, the band gained fame with him, you can't fire the vocalist you gained fame with. It will hit sales and everything MASSIVELY. It's not like changing another band members.

Watching this video again you can tell his voice died in 1999. Something weird must happened to him to have his voice already broken before touring... and then an entire year of SFAM world tour just overkilled it.

They’re old. That’s what it is. They can’t keep up with the studio recordings. I remember when systematic chaos came out I thought no way he can play constant motion live without mistakes, and then I saw chaos in motion, most of it was butchered. They’re trying too fast for themselves and are overestimated themselves. Call it a day and leave on a high note while you still can.

Their live performance always looked like a boring 9 to 5 job. They have zero energy and the most boring fans just standing there like they’re on a silent cattle auction.

As of 2024...i can't justify spending the money to hear James croak and strain the vocals while the band plays flawlessly. Sadly he just ruins the performance. He absolutely butchers almost everything.

Ravenskill, I just wanted to ask you on why did you say (not in this video) that Labrie vocal problems on studio albums started on The Astonishing? It was evident that Labrie used Autotune or other form of pitch correction since Octavarium (you can hear artefacts of bad production on e.g. Repentance 1:41, The Ministry of Lost Souls 4:00, A Nightmare to Remember 4:32, Wither 0:50 <I'm not 100% sure about that one>, Beneath the Surface 4:47 <this one sounds the same like that from Gift of Music). Yes I also know that Beyond This Life has autotune in "are deeds have travelled far" part but I think those were for artistic reasons, because this is not presented in other parts of the song or other songs from that album. I also can't listen to the first part of Octavarium, because of how much autotune it has. This shows that problem with quality was even present in albums with Portnoy. Once when I was with friend, I wanted to play To Tame a Land and I saw that DT had made a cover of it (BC&SL). It was great to the moment when Labrie attempted to sing "the time will come" part and my friend started bursting into laugh, because Labrie sounded like drunk Scooby Doo. I was wondering how this crap even appeared on studio album. Have them listened to this before putting it on album? And for vocal problems It didn't started on 1999 or 2002, but I even have seen shows from pre food poisoning time and Labrie was already on the edge of the breakage in some parts of songs. He also has never sung one of my favorite DT songs good "Voices". I don't know why I actually wrote this, but It seems to me that we have the same problem with Dream Theater. I was hooked to them, because of wonderful compositions and technical abilities of instrumentalists (in fact the first two songs that I heard from Dream Theater were Stream of Consciousness and Ytse Jam and after that I was wondering if this is instrumental only band <sadly I was wrong>) and later just discovered that You can't go on DT live, because It is so painful to listening to. If DT had an great vocalist who would have been technically skilled like other members of the band, it would be now the greatest band in the universe.
