Casting a Cannon from Brass | Part 2
Переглядів 113 тис.5 років тому
A day late and a dollar short but here is the update to our original cannon casting video. Maybe not the masterpiece we'd hoped for but at least the debilitating suspense you all must be under to see how things turn out can finally come to an end. Easiest Way to Cast Aluminum | PERFECT CASTING IN 5 MINUTES W/ NEW LOST SHELL METHOD
Переглядів 21 тис.6 років тому
I 3D-printed this hollow shell of Groot because I wanted to find an easier way to cast 3D prints in aluminum. I've seen a lot of videos on the lost PLA method of casting but that is complicated and expensive and I am lazy and cheap. This method (lost shell I guess it would be called) is exceptionally simple and can be done in a few minutes. I have been meaning to try this for a long time but I ...
Casting a Cannon from Brass | Part 1
Переглядів 234 тис.6 років тому
We made a freakin' CANNON. Again! This time we cast it from bullet casings and other scrap brass that we have been collecting for quite a while. The cannon is based on the 12-Pounder Napoleon and the carriage was a garage sale find. As always we figured it out as we went along. We bought the furnace for $60 and we added on the temperature controller electronics ourselves. The crucible was about...

    Stand the casting on end. So the muzzles up straight up. That way if u run out or material or u get shrinkage wen it cools, it can get cut off wen u clean it up

    What brass alloy did you use? Not all brass is of sufficient strength for cannons.

    When melting brass, ALWAYS do it outside. Brass is copper and zinc. Zinc will boil off, and zinc oxide is quite poisonous. (It is also that yellow stuff in your dross.) Bronze is copper and tin, and is much less poisonous. steve

    That is fairly alarming by how much bubbling you got out of that mold i would be worried that it might pop up a bit of metal and burn you real bad had that happen once before had the metal pop up to eye level i was wearing a mask but it still not good to see

    Should be able to use lost pla so that yiu don't need to use the pipe anymore. And it would all be solid brass. However the pipe is probably easier. Would be interesting to see you guys try lost pla for a cannon

    Ya'll need a little CO2 fire extinguisher! 😁 Thay are just right for situations like this, i.e. well ventilated area, partially dischargeable without leaking, works well on wood fires, and no mess to clean up because it's an inert gas. Much safer, and cleaner than spraying water on super hot metal. What I use is actually just a small CO2 bottle with a pistol type valve, all it takes is just a quick puff and fires out, no mess.

    Was the final size the external or internal size of the printed mold?

    • @Kentertained
      @Kentertained 3 роки тому

      That is a good questions. It would be the external of the mold since the pla is instantly vaporized but you also have to account for the shrinkage of the aluminum as it cools so I am not sure exactly how it mached up to the size of the mold.
