My parents grew up in Southern California in the 1920s and 1930s. While serving in the United States Navy during World War II, they occasionally rode the Southern Pacific Daylight and Starlight to return home and visit family.

You probably noticed that the train arrived "backwards." One of these decades, Los Angeles Union Station may re-build its tracks so that trains can both enter and exit the station with the locomotive(s) first. Don't hold your breath.

Late afternoon in September. All blessings on your wedding and your marriage !
Hello! This is a beautiful view! Do you know what time of day this was? I’m Considering getting married here.
Hello I'm 5'7 and I'm finding that they run on the bigger side so i should size down? I think i need a 52. Unfortunately i can't test one
I must admit that I'm pretty clueless about sizing a frame. You might want to check with one of your local bike experts. All Best Bike Vibes.
Wowww, definitivamente me convenció. Gracias 🙏🏼
Por nada. Gracias para mirar.
Excellent shot. Like ! ! !
Many thanks.

Hello the frame size of your bike is 56 cm right ??? How tall are you in cm please thank you
I think the frame is a 58. I'm 175 cm tall.

This is a great place to visit. Sequoia National Park. Great visitor areas throughout.
Love that place, what’s up from Yosemite
Sacred to be sure.
Beautiful video. Thank you for sharing.
You are most welcome.
Thats a shrub compared to the Great Trees that was cut down and history conveniently forgot to mention it. Way to go Nat Geo.

You are right its a awesome bike. Just bought the kona sutra se, touring version, with trippel chainring 3x10 and friction shifters. Super comfy to ride, and built like a tank. Love the look of the bike with the mix of retro and modern components on it also. Will use it for commuting to work, mixed surface riding and bike touring. Did bikepacking with my full suspension bike last summer, it was a nice trip, but to slow to ride on asphalt. Did not get all my camping gear with me on that bike either, with the kona sutra I have more room to bring stuff with me. Almost as fast to ride as my road bike, and way stronger to carry weight on without the fear of anything breaking on it. Can't wait to ride the norwegian fjords with it this summer, will be awesome. Enjoy your bike, cheers from norway!
Ride On !
Hi. I am having some trouble with brakes. It semms that they are not working properly. After a while yhe brake is very poor. Anyone with the same problem?
Brakes working fine for me. Not as luxurious as hydraulic, but stopping power is very good. Ask your bike technician if she/he recommends new pads or a switch to hydraulic.
are the wheels 700C or 28" ? it looks gorgeous and im willing to get myself one here in europe.and whats the wheel clearance if its 28" is there enough space for a bigger wheels ? thank you sir for the video
700 C. Without the fenders, there is bit of room for a larger size. Happy riding !
$$ ?
$1,750 US at time of purchase. Probably more today.
@@gratefultube Hi Bob and jhonda, I just bought a 2023 Sutra and love it, list price is $2099 and that's what I paid. I found dealers not too pleased with the Kona ownership shakeup and new policies, and not willing to move on price. Still, compared to the Surly Trucker I was also considering (at a lower price) I feel the Sutra is the value choice!
@@daveclark8788 Hi Dave, You're not a drummer, are you? (Sixties joke). Kona is not garnering much good karma these days. Hope they repent of their sins and work on getting better karma in the future. Happy Riding.
@@gratefultubeMy standard responses: gone solo, the Beatles wrecked it for us, and no, we have four kids so... ;-) Yes def true no good karma there, a really great line of bikes though, hopefully that smooths out and dealers can make some $$ again. I don't like the direction so many mfgrs, like Kona, have taken.
Thanks! Very informative video.
Thank you for watching.
I just bought a Union 1 to start commuting to work ,11 Miles round trip. It should arrive late this week. How have you liked the bike? Do you still have it?
Still have it. Still really like it. I've added RedShift "shock absorbers" for the handlebar stem and the seatpost. Really improve the ride. Absolutely flawless performance from the battery, the motor, and the drivetrain.
I have a second vidio out and a third planned. I have the original 1963 ConocoPhillips U.S map. That's the one behind me.
Road Maps ! No GPS !
Wish I had your equipment in 1965. Bike across america 1965. On utube. Great pictures, you guys had fun. Norm😊
What a trip you had !
Great video! I just bought a 2022 Sutra. I was on the fence between a 54cm and 52cm. I’m 5’9” also. 32+” inseam. I went with the 54. I was surprised to see you went with the 56 at 5’ 9”. What is your inseam? I have about an inch of strand over height on the 54. I felt cramped on the 52. Thanks.
My inseam is 32. I like the 56 because it gives me more of an upright riding position.
@@gratefultube Thank You. I was too upright on the 52 and 54. I changed the stem to a 90mm.
@@richardfuhrman5322 I bought a new shorter stem, 60 I think. Big improvement for me. I have very short arms. Makes a world of difference.
@@gratefultube Thank You for your input. I’m glad I went with the 54. Looking forward to some long rides.
Bob, Great video. I’m considering this bike, but concerned about sizing. You said you are 5’9” and comfortable on this 56 cm frame. The standover height on it is 32.9 Inches. I’m 5’10” with 32” inseam (measured to floor) . My local dealer doesn’t have a Sutra for me to try , so he suggested I try a 56cm Kona Rove model, which he said has similar geometry. I found it possible….but just. I wish I could get my hand on a Sutra, just to try. It will be a 54 or 56 in the end…Any suggestions ? Thanks, Jeff
Sounds like the 56 is the right size. Hope you get to ride a 56 Sutra before buying. If you can find somebody in your area who understands bicycle kinesiology, it might be worth a few shekels to help fine tune the seat height, handlebar height, and handlebar stem length.
Im 6’1 and got the 54. Fits perfectly
I actually live in Yorktown, Virginia, which is the home of the finishing point of the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail.
John -- All good vibes to you and everyone in Yorktown. Bob
@@gratefultube Thank you.
Thanks so much for the review! It has been extremely helpful. Was this the small or large version? Looks like there are two sizes on the website. Have you traveled on a plane with it as a Carry-on? Thanks again!
My pack is the smaller one. I have not traveled on a plane with it yet. To be honest, if I never go by air again, I'll be a happy camper.
@@gratefultube Thanks a ton for the response! Enjoy the adventures!
I’m looking at that bike in a size 58 to do touring on. Currently ride a recumbent trike and tow a burley trailer. My trike has 13 gear inches for climbing…22-32-44 and a 11-42 8 speed cassette and a 26” rear wheel with Tannus airless tires.
Happy Trails !
Thanks for making the vid! Looks like a nice pack. How's the carry? Are the straps and belt comfortable enough to wear for a couple hours while you bum around a city before you have to head to the airport/train station? Any idea on the dimensions?
I've worn it fully-loaded (clothes, computer, etc.) and it's very comfortable. Size is approx 10" x 12" x 22".
@@gratefultube Thanks for the answers! Looks pretty much right at the max for carry on. Kinda surprising mountain hardware doesn't have more info about it and yours was the only video or review I could find. Thanks again!
Very helpful couldn't find much online about this pack and wanted to know for sure before purchasing if it would fit as a carry on for flying. Much appreciated!
You are most welcome.
Did you end up buying it?
Thank you for the excellent review Bob! I'm 5' & 8.5" with a 32" inseam but have a short torso. I'm trying to decide between a 52 or 54cm frame on a Kona Sutra. I see where the Kona Sutra SE model comes with the triple chainring and the bar end shifters.
I'm 5' 9", 32" inseam. Check with an expert near you for the correct frame size. Triple chainring definitely the way to go. At age 70, bar end shifters seem like too much, um, shifting of upper body for me.
I was on my first overseas trip, (aged 24) I had come from Australia to do this event. We started four days behind the 'Sprocket Rockets, and we named our group 'Blazing Saddles'. To this day I still remember all the wonderful times our multi national team had, thanks for the memories.
Hello Russell, Blazing Saddles! That is so fantastic! Any chance you can be at the 50th anniversary party in Missoula, Montana in 2026? G'day, Mate.
Thanks, I really appreciate these images. Important history!
You are most welcome.
Like the video. Thank you
You are most welcome.
The Sutra SE has a triple chainring. May I ask why you didn't get that one? I'm trying to decide between the two.
Tripe chainring was my preference, but I settled for the plan ol' Sutra because of supply, um, chain issues.
I try to be careful about not pinching a portion of the tube that isn't seated properly inside the rim. I use 85 lbs per square inch. Not sure what that converts to in European measurement. Normally the bike weighs about 30 pounds. This past summer I rode 175 miles in three days with about 60 pounds weight. No flats!
Hi, nice video!, I had a problem with my front tire which blew out a few days ago, I wonder what pressure you set on your tires and approximately what weight it carries?
Have you tried riding without the battery?
Yes. No fun. The bike is very heavy.
@@gratefultube But you do take out the battery to charge it right?
@@anupamsingh9774 I leave the battery in the bike to charge it. It's a Royal Pain in the Keister to take out the battery.
Miss my Kona! Great bikes
May the emptiness your Kona left be filled with new goodness.
