Freeing a locked up motor for $5
How I do this on engines that are often deemed scrap. Use this method at your own risk and wear safety gear. I ass-ume no liability on anything even if your head explodes or the world ends.

Brian that is pretty neat I never would have thought about that before but it looks awesome I'm about to say vinegar doesn't hurt nothing hurt nothing
Bet a dollar to a dog nut hole plain water will also work. Think about it. That's what caused it to stick/rust in the first place. That's how farmers freed up rusted disks. Back them into the creek over night,.....next day free and turning. Mechanic friend was having a fit disassembling corroded AC fittings. Told him, get some towels, soak them in water, wrap the fittings. Next day, loosened with no problem.
good idea james caan i mean michael.
great ideas. I have a 351 Ford boat motor that the previous owner would not say if it was under water for a time, so I am going to say it was. I will definitely give it a shot. I may take it all the way down and finish with a boil of the block and start over. We'll see, time and money you know. Thanks
He is using store bought vinegar which is 6% vinegar. You can buy 75% vinegar which is about 14 times as powerful. It is not for human consumption. Read the warnings on the label. I bought mine from amazon. It is more expensive but i think worth. It works much faster.
Wow! That's amazin'!
Cool ass shit 😮
ive seen my brother use kerosene it freed it up !
Diesel fuel works ww
Nice 👍
So our grandfather's knew what they were talking about. 👍
I use half CLR and half diesel fuel
Worst thing you can do to a seized engine is force it to turn . Why make more unnecessary damage ?. Do it the right way and tear the damn thing down .. Then fix it right .
You've obviously never torn down a rust locked engine before. Try it and get back to me.
I never trust anyone who brings a chair to work.
I'll sleep better knowing that 😎
Got one to try this on. I'll let you know!
So that is a 4 bolt main V8 that could now be rebuilt ? Awesome 👌
Pretty awesome man. Thanks
The 4 bolts ARE getting harder to find.. especially if you live in a town with a short track.. Most of these boys in Indiana know what they are and wont run anything less.. We got one out back on the engine stand right now. She aint locked up yet, but, I wont forget this. Thank you.
Awesome post!!!! I have a 77 Olds 350 that is stuck! I'm going to employ your method asap. Thanks for sharing it with us all. Bert
Try using hydraulic fluid, called sky-drawl It’s an aircraft hydraulics lewd fluid that has 20% chromic acid in it give that a whirl. We’ll see what happens.
Amazing someone comes up with a very good way and right away someone knows better and does something else. Use the environmental clean vinegar not some expensive oil crap, this is worth doing with vinegar because of just being able to dump it on the floor afterward and rinse it with water. Oil sucks, it's not worth the cleanup afterward. I have seen other engines unlocked with vinegar because it actually attacks and softens the rust. Hell, plain water would be better and much easier than oil crap.
Who hurt you? 😭
Michael, Thanks! I will use this on my 1972 Pontiac 350. I will make that tool, but the Pontiac harmonic balancer is dished deep and only has the center bolt hole. How can I attach the square tube bar to the balancer? Any ideas from you are greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
Thank you Mr Jamison for that trick I will certainly pass it on to other gear heads I know. That's pretty slick thank you.
Good stuff Michael, men like us that take the time to do this are few and far in-between and I think we should be preserved somehow. My father did this same thing back in the day, way before all the Happy horse shit we now have on the market. I must say how disappointed I was to find out the fact that, all the many so- called "tricks" I've seen on UA-cam, well, it's rather humbling to find out you aren't the first to figure shit out. But none the less, it's great to see people who still use their heads for more than a hat rack. Looking forward to more from your site, it's right up my alley. That's ALLEY, not ASS ... Just for the record.😂
Live and learn.
Using this on my balanced 350 truck motor. Thanks for posting. Gotta save the old girl. We go way back.
👍🫡✌️
Good to know, Thanks !
Thanks for the idea. I like your laid back presentation style and evil sense of humor. I got a complete 350 on stand in garage now that sat outside for a year. I'm thinking that I could just pour vinegar down the intake and crank down the rocker arm nuts now. No exhaust manifolds handy, but I can make something to block off ports. A lot cheaper than PB blaster. 👍🤔 Not sure how it would work on 'roids though.
The ingenuity of some people amazes me.
Thanks for sharing a great tip!
Exactly I’ve used it for knives before and it works really thank you for sharing this info with the community big shout out from Toronto Canada 🇨🇦 soon to be free of el Turdoh!!!permanently much love
Never seen this, looks like it works like a charm. I reached 76 so I won't be doing much engine work any longer. There was a time when you could actually buy a gallon of marvel mystery oil pretty cheap but those days have long since passed. Today the cost of a rebuilt engine to me is shocking, Thousands of dollars and climbing. In 1970 you could buy a complete long block rebuilt for 300 bucks. Thanks for the great tip
Is this for fun unlocking it without dissassembling it ?
No. But nobody needs to watch another video on how to take a SBC engine apart. About like making a vid on how to fart.
Thanks,I would have never though that.
I rebuilt TWO 454 BIG BLOCKS....locked solid.... pounded them pistons out...rebore .40 over... long story short....they RUMBLED
Very useful info , I have a couple to try this on for sure !
Thank you so much!!!
The vinegar seems to work a treat getting these old engines to free up, the only thing I've found that comes close has been a mix of 2/3 acetone to 1/3 ATF but the vinegar trick has never let me down. Great Video!
THANKS marine engines get stuck .
It's great to have a three-part video all in one. Thanks, Mike! Save that vinegar to herbicide weeds.
Try citric acid its even better
Definitely good to know. If I ever find a locked up SBC, I have a new plan of attack for unlocking it. Makes me wonder if something like orange juice would work too. It's more expensive, but it also has an acid content to it. And who wouldn't want to smell oranges? What state are you in? If that engine is up for sale, I might be able to figure out an actual use for it, without any liquids going down the exhaust manifolds.
And I just learned something new today :)
😮 just like pudding God bless
What about CLR or WD-40
Thanks have a good one
Wow, it's amazing how white vinegar will teat into rust!
I've been wondering how I was gonna free up that frozen V6 boat engine. Thanks!!!
lol omg thats funny ,,not a hater lol
