    As i get older, i am enjoying animation more and more than modern live action films. I saw a lovely Japanse anime at BFI festival, "The Colors Within", loved it. May be it's just not your thing? In terms Wes Anderson, i adore Fantastic Fox which is animated Stop motion , however the only other film of his i would rewatch is The Grand Budapest Hotel. I love stop motion, from Wallace and Gromit to Jan savakmajer! Total agree about Goddard, for me his films are intellectual examinations. Re Fellini, i would start with La Strada, not fan of 8 1/2). have you seen da sica’s "The Bicycle Theives."

    • @reel_reflections
      @reel_reflections 4 дні тому

      I need to watch more Ghibli to see if I can get back into some of it perhaps. The two Anderson's you mentioned are perhaps my favourite of his also. Your two stop motion picks are terrific shouts as I really like both! Godard is challenging for sure, don't mind it being intellectual, but for me it's how he engages with his film-as criticism approach that leaves me cold. Fellini I just can't justify why I haven't seen any, major blind spot! Ah well.. Bicycle Thieves is just wonderful, in fact Italian neo-realism is what breaks my indifference to Italian cinema!

      @@reel_reflections if you like Ghibli, definitely watch, Miyazaki's Laputa, Nausicaa, my neighbour totoro, princess mononoke, spirited away and porco rosso (an underrated favourite of mine), his later two films, the wind rises and the boy and the heron are more grown up subjects. Then move onto Isao Takahata's Ghibli films, Graves of the fireflies, Princess Kaguya, only yesterday and also my neighbours the yamadas is delightful too. Pom Poko is okay too. I first watched all of these 20 years ago at cinema or dvd/blu ray, before the Netflix anime explosion, and then watched them multiple times with both my daughters as they grew up, The eldest is 17 and they both still love these films.

  • @TheLittleMJPuppet
    @TheLittleMJPuppet 15 днів тому

    I agree, but the only reason I do is because the marvel movies inherently suck. I'm a DC movie fan instead because I find their movies have much more substance, and yes, even the Zack Snyder movies. Man of Steel and Batman v Superman are the most sophisticated superhero films I've seen. It's to the point where they're sci-fi fantasy films, not comic book films. I mean for god sakes, Chris Terrio (an academy award winning screenwriter) was a co-writer for Batman v Superman.

    Finally watched last Saturday (Megloplas postponed to next week). It's was very good. My wife who has a weak stomach sat through it and enjoyed it, although as a womon she felt it lacked some internal substance with the Demi Moore character, something a bit deeper. I found the film also very loud and visually bombastic, but it is very entertaining and surprisingly pretty funny at some strange moments (i.e when a male character is walking to the appartment bathroom to address some strange nosies). Lots of easter eggs throughout, from Gollum, frankentien, Dr jeykell to Carrie. I love your nod to “bigger than life”. I also agree with you that the film went on a bit long and tried to hammer the message home loud and clear at the end. I generally have a problem with films that set out to give a direct messages, like Barbie did last year. I always look back at that famous Hitchcock quote, “mesages are for western union, not my films”. However, the film is definately an enteraining and an important artwork work that looks to discuss female vanity and image neurosis.

      @@heartofcinema3454 ah yes Megaflopolis as people seem to be calling it already (I really want it to be good). Glad you managed to catch it and enjoy it (wife too!). You're right it is darkly funny at parts, especially when Demi Moore is in full 'witchy/hag' mode. I usually don't have a problem with 'message' movies, and I am charitable to them even if they tend to hammer them home as some audiences really miss stuff unless it is presented right in front them.

    11:56 you mentioned the expectations "via men and also women", but I saw the film last night and there are no women in the film who apply that pressure, it's exclusively the male characters. In fact, there are no women with any dialogue except Elisabeth and Sue (unless you count the waitress who takes Elisabeth's order). You also speak about this being a broad societal expectation, when the film is set specifically in the microcosm of the entertainment industry. I just think it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking of this film as a broad social commentary, when it actually fails to communicate that and instead only presents particularly lecherous men acting as the gatekeepers of the entertainment industry.

    • @reel_reflections
      @reel_reflections Місяць тому

      @@randolphcarter4560 I see your point however I think the film goes at great lengths to also show Sue's supposed empowerment due to internalising these very expectations. So kind of in the same way men are also victims of patriarchal values that they themselves perpetuate, Sue does the same. She sells the dream of idealised body image. This is what makes Sue inherently unlikeable in contrast to Elisabeth who is the (end) result of said perpetuation of ideals. Your point about the entertainment industry being gatekept by men though is definitely depicted in the film! I think the producer character's name is even Harvey! Just to get that point home more.

      @@reel_reflections - I thought it was pretty good but wish I had watched it at a better cinema as there was zero surround sound and the volume didn’t even seem loud enough. Better quality audio would have made a big difference imo. I watched the only breakdown video I could find on UA-cam the following day and must say I appreciated the movie more than my initial reaction after walking out of the auditorium. Sometimes when watching back-to-back movies where there is little to no breaks in between you don’t have time to fully digest the previous movie before starting to watch the next one. I’ve booked to watch five movies this weekend at Cineworld’s flagship Leicester Square multiplex. 4DX, IMAX and Superscreen. 😎

    Having been an avid fan for 43 years, i would really struggle now to sit down and watch any of his films from start to finish due to the simple fact ive seen them too many times. I know what every scene coming up in the films are going to be and almost all the dialogue word for word. The only exceptions are the Mandarin Big Boss due to the new scenes which i havent seen (yet) hundreds of times and i get the urge now and again to watch Final Game of Death. For only that reason, Final Game of Death is my #1.

    I have seen every single one of his theatrically released films, and this is how I’d rank them from worst to best: 19. *Deal of the Century* The director has never spoken of this film anywhere. For good reason. 18. *The Night They Raided Minsky’s* A 1960s musical depicting the back stage interactions at a burlesque repertory? “Yes, please!”, said nobody ever. 17. *Good Times* Everyone starts somewhere. 16. *The Guardian* The late great Roger Ebert in his review humorously pointed out that this is the first horror film in history where a chainsaw is used to attack a tree. 15. *The Brink’s Job* This crime caper comedy drama is a curiously unambitious step back for the director considering the film he did before this one. 14. *Bug* A psychological horror film that should have grabbed me but didn’t. 13. *Blue Chips* I like a great sports movie, but this not one of them. Nick Nolte is however very fun to watch in role of a college basketball coach. 12. *The Birthday Party* A filmed play, basically. I think I liked this better than Friedkin did. And it’s always a joy to watch Robert Shaw’s acting chops. 11. *Jade* More or less a total rehash of Basic Instinct (which Joe Eszterhas also penned), albeit an entertaining one. But the movie is far from Friedkin’s best work (contrary to what he claimed otherwise). 10. *Rules of Engagement* Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson are always a treat to watch in this very competently made courtroom drama. But long gone is the Hurricane Billy era. 9. *The Boys in the Band* Another filmed play. Not very cinematic, but this is an extremely well-acted relationship drama that ushered in the Queer Cinema subgenre. Highly recommended. 8. *The Hunted* If you liked the source novel to First Blood better than the classic Stallone film, you should check this adventure thriller out. 7. *Rampage* This hidden gem was shelved for five years before getting a theater release in 1992. Not without some flaws, it does feature one memorable jump scare-and the movie is a legal drama! 6. *Killer Joe* Though not quite a return to form as far as edge goes, this is the best film he’s done in many years. 5. *Sorcerer* Often cited as one of the last intellectual films that typified the “New Hollywood” of the 1970s. Not quite a masterpiece, but absolutely a must watch. This would be the first in a string of flops that the director never quite recovered from. 4. *To Live and Die in L.A.* The last great film by this legendary director, it feels like The French Connection hopped up on 1980s coke! And whatta car chase! 3. *Cruising* I don’t care what anyone says, this is one fearless, gritty and edgy crime thriller, and it’s all the better for it. Classic Friedkin nastiness with a terrific atmosphere. 2. *The French Connection* Nothing more needs to be said about this film, except to say that if you haven’t seen it, you are not a true cinephile. 1. *The Exorcist* The greatest horror film ever made. Period. Full stop.

    Great video lad and such an interesting topic to bring up. I am definitely in the boat of content creators who don't look to fondly on reactors as it it the laziest form of content. I could never believe the reactors that say first time reaction because when you watch their video they catch a lot of thing that you wouldn't catch on the first watch. They seem to remember everything on the first time watch. Also, i never could comprehend how all these people who saw 5 films in their lives want to react to hundreds of them all of a sudden. Of course the reason is for views and I don't begrudge that. I get it. A lot of these reactors don't make much from UA-cam due to monetisation issues and on top of that they have the looming threats of copyright strikes. They make most of their money from patreon or similar sites where people essentially pay to suggest films and access full length reactions or show up on the end screen or get their name read out. This is how reactors make most of their money. The big ones have thousands of patrons. Also these videos are just reactions and no end thoughts most of the time. That really bugs as they have a chance to add some input from their own brain but don't. It's really just lazy content. Another problem is that surely if you cared about seeing these films for the first time and enjoying them, you'd do so comfortably and not while being recorded, knowing you have to talk and react. I don't know about you but if I'm watching alone i don't say a single word and i don't want to miss things. So I'm expected to believe that a reactor watching for the first time while talking over somehow keeps up with the plot and knows enough about it to comment. That's hard to believe. Who knows what the future of reaction channels are. I don't think UA-cam likes them very much as they're hard to monetize and make their revenue mostly off UA-cam. These are my rambling thoughts. Awesome video reel.

    • @DOUBLEA1
      @DOUBLEA1 Місяць тому

      I forgot to say that I've noticed once these reactions channels have watched the majority of popular films that enough people care to watch reactions to, they move onto tv shows which is good for them as they're longer content that they can stretch more videos out. It's only a matter of time before reaction channels eventually can't maintain their patterns because of reacting to everything that gets views. They may eventually die out.

    • @DOUBLEA1
      @DOUBLEA1 Місяць тому

      Also, the fact that most reaction channels only react to horror in October proves your point on reactors being chained to reacting to trendy and popular films. This is why they do recent releases as soon as they can. Finally, since reactors show the film in the corner of their videos, are we expected to believe they all buy the film and get that footage ethically. I think not.

    Great video champ. Very informative. your a very good speaker and interesting to listen too. Erm .... I must say im not a big fan of reaction channels in all honesty, sure I've seen my fair share of viewing reactions, of films and music, mostly music though, but like you say they just sit there and ... Do nothing 😂😐. Also ive notice the same film thing ...i mean ... Its as if all reaction channels are watching everyone else to pick up what there watching to see if it will get traction, which im boy a fan of.... Ive seen films reactors where say .... The film.... "Taken" which is great, say someone reacts to that today, and they had a lot of views, ill guarantee withing a month there would be numerous channels reactiong the that film. Ive also seen "fake" reactors, where there reacting comes across very forced and just fake, also when they say "first time watch" and let's say .... There watching a comedy thats funny and a funny acene is about to come up, some are almost about to laugh before that funny part and im thinking "i thought you hadnt seen it" "so how did you know there was going to be a funny part?" Even when the funny scene hasnt been built up. And some reactors when there's a funny scene some make a fake laugh, i know everyone finds different things funny which is cool, but .... Theres many who do forced laughter ... Theres a guy in america who reacts to british tv comedies "us british telly comedy is the best though i say so myself 😂" but he laughs like every 5seconds, exrremely loudly and forced, and i cant watch them. But when they say "first time watch" for a film . Or "first time listen" to a song i dont always believe them, which can be easy to spot by there expressions. I dont really watch reaction channels now, and i never watch them a lot but i have seen my fair share, and occasionally i like to see the odd reaction of some music i like as my music taste would be clast as " old fashioned " 😂 i prefer to call it "good taste" 😂 and to see how others react to the "older" music. Great video again though champ.

      Thank you for the compliments mate, means a lot! Yeah exactly, it is hard to determine what is genuine or not at at times. I think that is what bothers a lot of people. And like I say in the vid most reactors seem to like everything through fear of losing their audience I suspect.

    Interesting and very good video. Keep up the good work. I have also watched a few reaction videos before, yet at the same time I found them to be a very lazy content style and at times rather cringe. I did however find myself looking to see if people felt the same emotions as me when watching a certain scene from a movie. Two movies that I've watched reactions are 'Last of the Mohicans' and 'American History X'. Both films with quite highly charged emotional scenes. For example in 'American History X', before Derek (Edward Norton's character) leaves prison, he has a small chat with his friend, who will remain in prison and that to for a far lesser crime and they fist bump each other . Derek's friend also helped him alot. This scene made me feel quite sad. Ultimately, I watched a few reactions and 3 out of 9 had a similar reaction to me. For some reason, made me like the person giving the same reaction as me. Anyway I felt like writing this message. Keep up the good work and I'm intrigued to see which type of films you review later on. Stay healthy!
