This bird was too far away for good quality, but any view of this creature is good. This is a female, lacking the red stripe in the facial markings.
Rare Bird Alert: Solitary Sandpiper

This bird is not unheard of in Humboldt, but it's still considered rare and was a new bird for me, a "lifer". This happened in the dark early morning and the camera wouldn't hold focus and then the battery died before finding out the fate of the creature the bird was trying to catch. Aug 30, 2024

steller's jay eating mantis

This Steller's Jay caught what I think might be a mantis on this cool late summer morning. The insect was likely easy pickings in the chilly weather. After deftly tearing off the wings, the rest of the insect was quickly consumed.
Mergansers, Mallard, and Egrets

A huge group of young Common Mergansers, maybe 40 , floated by my spot at the river today. Suddenly a white flash filled my camera lens and a Great Egret landed right between me and the ducks. Then the group floated past and the egrets moved on as well, somewhat alarming a Mallard who had been quietly resting at the edge of the water.

The Wood Ducklings are growing up. On this day a male in eclipse plumage was along for the ride for a short while.

One adult and at least one pup made a brief appearance at the river today. You can hear a bit of vocalization at around the 26th second. One of the pups gives a pretty good look at its face as it briefly swims toward the camera.

This video is not good quality, but what makes it worth sharing is how rare it is to see more than one mink at a time. This looks like a family unit with two larger adults and two smaller juveniles who are about 2/3 grown. There are two darker ones and two lighter in color. Amazing footage! That looks like a huge fish the hungry female Merganser caught and swallowed (do you know what kind?) here! The fish seemed to be resisting and not too happy to stare down the bird’s throat! 😧🐟😅 I wonder, can the fish stand a chance of escaping the elastic neck/stomach if eaten in that condition?? It’s so big, maybe it can still survive.
