    The rearmost bunk room on the starboard side was my bunkroom. I rode one hitch on the Lydia with mate Ronny, and the Captain whose name escapes me, but he'd stand above the stern on the second deck after his pm watch had ended, and howl at the moon. My next hitch was aboard the Elly Lane, and each hitch after that was spent decking aboard the Lainey Jones. Mitchell Shropshire, a green hand rode deck on the Lydia the same 30 days I did. He also went to a different vessel for his next hitch. It would be his last! He was on deck locking through one of the Huger boats when his lockline broke due to that Captain not verifying Mitchell had him "all gone" at the stern of their tow. Mitchell being new at this trade had forgotten that if a line is getting tighter, to get away from it. As the Capt continued easing forward, Mitchell's lock-line got tighter and tighter while he frantically tried to unfoul it. The line snapped in two, striking Mitchell in the head, killing him at the ripe old age of 26 years old. He had a wife and one child. Mitchell was a good guy. I met him at Belle Chase, and we both boarded the Lydia together. He's on my mind often, as I've named one of my guitars Mitchell in his honor. During my only trip aboard the Lydia, we came out from "The Ditch" with a full set to turn the Lainey Jones on Sept 11th, 2001. We were meeting her above Starved Rock at LaSalle/Peru about the time the news began live coverage of the Twin Towers in NYC. I'm not a superstitious man. But nobody on this planet has enough wealth to get me back aboard the m/v Lydia E Campbell. My last hitch aboard the Lainey Jones with Capt Barry makes me feel as though it was supposed to be my "Final Destination." Once after my 30 off, Dispatch pulled me from the Lainey which was my assigned boat to run one hitch aboard the William J Grayson, the former flagship of Reco Transportation where I ran 1st Mate on the mighty Joe McAlister. While seeing Capt Johnny Newson and cook Lou Hall once again was great, sadly this was about when the Lainey caught fire. The spooky thing about that is in the photos of the her all ablaze, my bunk room at the end of the corridor on the 2nd deck portside was engulffed in black smoke and bright orange flames which apparently originated directly below my quarters in the engine room. That hitch aboard the William J Grayson was my final ride on deck at CBC, or anywhere. If you ask anyone that's been at Canal since the late '90s about a deckhand named MacGyver, that would be me. m/v Karen Renee Hamm (1991-1995) m/v Elaine Jones (1995-1996) m/v Walter Hagestad (1996) m/v Joe McAlister (1996-1997) m/v Lydia E Campbell (2001) m/v Elly Lane (2001) m/v Lainey Jones (2001-2003) m/v William J Grayson (2003) Be safe out there! maKenny (MacGyver)

    I've been going down to Starve Rock Lock and Dam for at least 20 years, I stay for at least 5-6 hours , the lock is located in Ottawa, Illinios not far from Utica, Illinois: I usually visit during the summer about 7 times in the fall about 3 times. I would of liked to known since I have military time I might of had a chance to work at the locks but I did not know it at the time: or worked on the boats it self, it is 54 miles away from where I live, its been my hobby for a long time and I used to have a book that had all towboats in it, which I believe might not be used any more since I don't buy them anymore. I usually had a scanner when I go but I believe I might of left it , since I cannot locate it, new scanners costs about $400,00 and right now its to much to spend. Andrew 7:55am 7/7/16.

    Lol yea she's a jack up boat so unfortunately that is the only way in or out of the crew quarters other than through the mates room or my reliefs room and they were both asleep

    Good job first of all, note: always try to enter crew quarter alley from anywhere other than engine room.

    • @fioredecor222
      @fioredecor222 10 років тому

      They look like EMD 645-12-e7b's that make about 2,100 hp at about 900 rpm. EMD's are 2-stroke med. speed diesels and the railroads use them a lot. Great engines; worked on many boats with 12, 16, & 20 cylinder 645 turbos in ship assist and barge work. No diesel sounds as good as an EMD!
