I'm 36 years old and have listened to a hell of a lot of music in my life. On that note, I have listened to a hell of a lot of dark music in my life, including some very disturbing and rough underground Black Metal and experimental metal albums. Nothing has ever creeped into my core like this album did, and I applaud Ethel for that. She perfectly matched the darkness of the content of her music with enough non dark elements to make everything far more impactful and painful than anything I have ever heard before. There's an eerie liminal nostalgia to it all that is almost like a dream from childhood (I grew up in Missouri and I can't quite explain it, but she captured the dark underbelly feeling of small town midwestern life). Hayden is a master artist, there is no doubt. I look forward to seeing what she does next, but it'll be hard to beat Preachers Daughter. As of now, this is her magnum opus, and that's one hell of a way to start a career!

lilies symbolize the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. They also symbolize purity and rebirth; I don't know if she planned this as a foreshadowing to the events of Preacher's Daughter, but that definitely could explain the hopeless undertones. Like she is predicting her own death or is already a spirit reflecting on it? Or the death of her father? No clue, I've only recently started listening to her

You forgot to mention that the song "crush" is also about her lover who WAS a bad boy, and for whatever reason passed away. The video shows her getting ready to go visit him at his grave.....leaves him a smoke while wearing a super feminine white dress, complete with little white gloves and heels. The lyrics "couldnt fight to save your life, but you look so cool. Camo jacket robbing liquor stores. Hard odds to beat while youre on all fours. Good men die too. Oh I'd rather be with you." Whether that means she would rather not be here anymore to be wherever her crush is, idk. I have a feeling this song is about Logan tho. But ??? Great song tho. Its the first ethel cain song I heard. I was instantly hooked!

36:12 poll type of comment - I have to tell parents or love ones either their loved one is dead or sometimes I was the last person that talked to their loved one. Is it better to lie and say the poetic version of what happened or should I tell them the truth? You don’t know how much I think about this. How many times I would tell people “he said ‘tell my wife and kids I love her..’ “when his actual last words were unintelligible and screaming for his friend who also is dead.

‼️Ptolemaea is my FAVORITE song! It's how I discovered her music and I still think it is the best song she's ever put out. It's so unique and haunting and how the sounds of flies buzzing actually plays into the beats and tones and lyrics. Its a reference to Beelzebub one of the seven demon princes who's other name is Lord of the flies. He's the demon of gluttony and envy. She's just so creative this song is so unique. There's so much symbolism in it. Her voice is haunting and perfect and the atonal instrumentals behind it just creates sucha fantastic listening experience. Atonal instrumentals are commonly used in horror movies especially demon possession movies as the backing soundtrack. I can literally go on and on about this song all day. Imo its her best work and it will always be my favorite.

I personally like to think that during the last chorus of Strangers (repetition of "am i making you feel sick?") is ethel's final cry of frustrations, with each question repeated over and over again, she changes courses from asking if she's no good to making sure that she's no good (in his stomach lol) her first and final victory against him (giving him food poisoning), and she milks it by reiterating the question over and over again, as if mocking him, before finally moving on and changing her audience towards her parents

I always interpreted the “long cold war with your kids at the front” to be about the “holy war” a lot of Christians believe in where they’re fighting “the enemy” (the devil). I feel like it could be interpreted many different ways though, like all Ethel’s music. Also not me never realizing the Logan and Ethel got MARRIED

i have some beliefs to add/share abt inbred! - "mommas comatose, she can't leave the bed. something smells rotten and it's starting to spread" this line actually enforces for me that it is ethel's dad. i believe that the first part of this line might be genuine. i've heard so many stories of mens wives getting sick and they take that out by sa'ing their child/ren. and by "somethings rotten and it's starting to spread", i think that is the build up to the first sa encounter. - "if he wakes up he'll show you what i'm talking about" for some reason i really think this is literal, like the brother is living in the house and the sa is happening at night and she's just hoping that he will wake up. it makes it more scary for me. with that being said i think inbred is also an au to ethels actual story, still breaks my heart though. i loveeee that song.

When you mention Ethel being an unreliable narrator, I just keep thinking about how she's telling her c-ptsd story from an almost out-of-body perspective. A lot of channels dedicated to cptsd and mental health will talk about being stuck in trauma cycles because our brains have been hardwired to be addicted to the pain and chaos, and I feel like that's part of why she talks about negatives like they're positive. For example, Ethel says she wanted to get in the truck, but witnesses say she was kidnapped. Was she forced in by Isaiah while her brain forced her not to fight? Because she's used to men forcing themselves on her? And so, did a traumatized part of her love the cycle repeating how it did? (I am not trying to victim blame with this comment; I am trying to convey my theory on the narration style. If you've experienced anything like the events in this story line, please seek the appropriate help and resources. You deserved to be loved in ways that do not hurt you, and no hurt should be made out of "love" 💜)

I personally think that Sunday Mornings is about her excusing an abusive man’s behavior. She knows that what he does is wrong, she knows that she needs to get out and get away from him, but she loves him so much and seems to have developed Stockholm syndrome to the point where she loves the pain he causes and she recognizes the humanity and the twisted fantasies that they share. Sunday mornings are seen as holy and fresh, where sometimes horrible things are excused in the name of religion or God. Towards the end of the song I think she is pleading and almost praying that despite how evil this man is, that he would not only change, but that he will be okay (and therefore end up in heaven, forgiven and made clean). It’s quite beautiful and gut wrenching and as someone with some intense religious trauma, it resonates with me deeply.

Also thanks for the video I👏 how you explained the albums so I could easily understand even when I had no understanding of the story at all.
