    Loved your video, I got rid of my machine after moving to a smaller place but have since wanted to do small projects like making pads. I considered hand sewing but was hesitant. After watching your tutorial I am going to recycle my Fleece PJ's and a flannel pillowcase just for the heck of it. I have some from Amazon but keep thinking I could make them. Thanks for the incentive. It's interesting how for many yrs I used disposable pads and am going back to cloth, now trying hand sewing again. lol it's a good choice and skill to have. 🌺

      sometimes i’ll add them to a mesh bag. but usually i don’t. i just wash them on hot with my kitchen towels the first wash, then add it into whatever washes i have after that until it’s been washed about 4 times.

    My question is regarding how do I *KNOW* that they are clean? I soak and rinse and soak and wash and now after a year of use I'm noticing a hard section on some of my pads. Is this buildup? It leads me to think they are not clean so I was them again yet I'm still left aware and wondering??

    • @OnTheRagYT
      @OnTheRagYT 3 роки тому

      thank you so much for your question! i have some follow up questions to help you troubleshoot your issue. you’re more than welcome to reach out on instagram or an email (both linked in the description) if you’d like to answer these privately! what are you soaking your pads in? are you applying stain treaters to any stains? what kind of detergent are you using? are you washing multiple pads at one time? do you wash your pads with any other laundry? do you experience these hard spots on certain pads (like flannel or minky) or does it seem to appear on random pads? i look forward to hearing from you and helping you!

    • @lulahbelle970
      @lulahbelle970 3 роки тому

      @@OnTheRagYT Appreciate your response. Soaking pads in oxi cleaner recommended by various others, the ecover stain remover, detergent is basic, yes i wash mutiple pads at once, yes with other laundry, all pads are bamboo charcoal it says...

    • @OnTheRagYT
      @OnTheRagYT 3 роки тому

      i also use an oxi soak with my pads! i find that if i use too much, a film can form on the pads and i have to do a second rinse. in my experience, i would say that your issue might come from your stain treatment. sometimes they don’t wash out, especially if a lot of product is used. i would personally wash the affected (unsoiled) pads in warm to hot water if that’s available, once with no detergent and maybe a little vinegar. air dry them and wash a second time with half the recommended dose of detergent and something heavy, like a couple of towels or a throw blanket. in the future, i would suggest that you try washing your pads and checking them for stains before applying any stain treatment. the oxi might take care of your stains and an additional treatment might not be needed! if you continue to have a build up on your pads, reach back out and i’ll do some research and see what might help! thanks so much for reaching out. 🖤🖤🖤

    • @OnTheRagYT
      @OnTheRagYT 3 роки тому

      this is a really great question! you can actually hear PUL in a pad if you rub the back of it. it sounds kind of scratchy. if you can’t hear it, you can feel that it’s different than the other side. the outer fabric slips against the PUL whereas it doesn’t slip when it’s just against the core. i hope this helps!

    Thank you! That's very helpful and I can follow as a complete beginner. I have a question; I want to sew some small panty liners for daily use or leak control with a menstrual cup, so I'm not really concerned about it absorbing a full flow. Will it be more breathable if I use a soft 100% cotton fabric, like one from a tshirt, instead of the fleece? And does that do the job?

    • @OnTheRagYT
      @OnTheRagYT 3 роки тому

      i’m so glad it was helpful! you can certainly use cotton for something that’s just a liner. it won’t be water resistant, but you could always bulk it up a little if it needs to absorb a little more. i have some that are flat cotton front and back with three layers of flannel inside that are more than absorbent for a small leak. please reach back out if you need anything! 🖤

    Depending on fabric, it could be thinner I'm guessing. Or bi-fold it instead 🤷🏿I'm excited to sew this. Also the tip about this pad being good for people who don't have access to washer and dryer was very helpful. That's one of the reasons I use flat cloth diapers it's easy to wash,dry, and is versatile. So I asked for this video so I could have flat style pad.

    • @OnTheRagYT
      @OnTheRagYT 4 роки тому

      absolutely! there’s always pros and cons to different fabrics. but considering you’d be folding it over twice or even three times, you would have at least six layers of absorbency. it’s more than worth giving a shot! these pads are so easy to customize before and after they’re sewn. cloth diapers are an amazing option because they’re thin to begin with!

    Does the diaper prefold and Muslin Hold up as well as the other pads?

    • @OnTheRagYT
      @OnTheRagYT 4 роки тому

      yeah! muslin is my favorite way to float a core right now. it doesn’t cause any bulk in the wings and i tend to make my pads with it currently. the diaper prefold holds up well. my only issue is that it can stain pretty bad. so i would make sure you have a layer on top of it that doesn’t stain as easily, like flannel.

    This is a great idea! Have you ever accidentally touched the inside of your soiled pad while removing it? How can you avoid that?

    • @OnTheRagYT
      @OnTheRagYT 4 роки тому

      i’m not too fussed about blood so if i accidentally touch it, it doesn’t bother me. but if it’s something that would bother you, an H shaped pad is pretty easy to just shake out of your underwear without having to touch it! if the ends aren’t soiled, you could fold them down and use the ends to remove your pad as well.

    How long does it take you to hand sew one pad?

    • @OnTheRagYT

      it really depends on the size of the pad. i can finish a pad less than 10 inches in about two hours.

      Thank you. I was given a sewing machine that I've had to trouble shoot so much that I'm tempted to just sew by hand because I really want to make these and not be constantly frustrated with an older machine that has been well loved.

      we just got my wife a new sewing machine last weekend! the lady we got it from didnt know how to sew so it needed a LOT of troubleshooting. i finally figured it out but sewing machines scare me. i have to work up the courage to use it. 😂

    Do you think a polyester shower curtain would work in place of PUL? (I don't have access to PUL but still want a water-resistant fabric)

    • @OnTheRagYT
      @OnTheRagYT 4 роки тому

      thank you for your question! might i suggest a fleece instead? using any sort of shower curtain or baby crib liner would result in a worse pad than if you’d made it with fleece. things such as shower curtains aren’t meant to be washed once a month and are full of chemicals you don’t want near your intimate parts. a fleece will work just fine! if you have a thrift store near you, i’d suggest upcycling fleece jackets. (north face is always a great bet!) please let me know if you need any further help

    I’ve seen people cut the PUL with wings, like the topper and the backer. Do I need to cut it like that or can I cut it the same shape as the core and sew it to the core?

    • @OnTheRagYT
      @OnTheRagYT 4 роки тому

      thanks so much for your question! you can certainly omit the wings if your core is hidden. but a note: i don’t personally suggest cutting it to the same size as the core. i would suggest cutting it as the same size as your topper, just minus the wings. that will offer you the most protection. if you need a visual, check out my newest video about the H shape pad; there, i have a layer of pul just under one side. hope this helped!
