Fort McAllister is most well known for being the site of the final battle of William T. Sherman's famous "March to the Sea" in December of 1864. We are also the testbed for the Passaic Class Union warships, which were first tested against a land fortification in 1863. Industrialist Henry Ford started the restoration of the fort in the 1940s. The State of Georgia acquired the property in the 1960s and continued to improve on Mr. Ford's work. In addition to the historic site, today the fort also boasts a 64 site campground, 7 up-scale marsh-view cottages, picnic shelters, boat ramps, boat storage, and a museum. The park is one of the best locations on the Georgia coast to view wildlife. Deer, racoons, rabbits, and eagles can be seen daily. The park is a prime location on Georgia's Colonial Coast Birding Trail.
