The Improvyssey
Canada
Приєднався 1 сер 2019
I play a lot of musical instruments, and my default mode is improvisation. This is an improv-a-day-type channel, albeit on the understanding that some days I may just deke out of the improv and go climb trees or something. Who knows? Tree-climbing emergencies happen. Otherwise, I'll try to post relatively frequently. There will probably be a lot of piano here, but other instruments will make appearances too, including but not limited to the accordion, the ukulele, the harp, the pennywhistle, the mandolin, and the toy piano. It is entirely possible that I am enamoured of weird instruments and instruments many treat as toys. My first video features a pink toy piano, just to demonstrate my general level of deadly seriousness.
My only rule for the improvs is that there will be no words in the videos. There WILL be a blurb accompanying each video. What will be in it? Who knows? Uncertainty is exciting.

Unresolved: Improv 1,888 (Dixon D whistle and shruti box)
Today I finally dared to set the shruti box to anything but 1-5-1. It's on 7-4-7. The drone's notes are C-G-C; the whistle is tuned in D. I expect this means I'm playing in a specific mode, but I've never really learned the modes.

Midnight Conversation: Improv 1,887 (Anglo concertina and shruti box)

In this case, the conversation is between the instruments. The concertina is quite chatty, while the shruti box is just going, "Drooooooooooooooooooooooooooooone."

I've asked the gnomes what they're doing there, but they just make rude gestures and run away. I'm enjoying how natural concertina playing is feeling now.

Summer's End: Improv 1,882 (Vardes piano accordion)
Переглядів 7614 годин тому
Even though it's still ridiculously hot and humid, the plants and animals know summer is ending. The fall colours are slowly taking over, and the tiny songbirds are stopping by on their way south. My accordion is sad about this.
Falling Leaves Are a Dance of Sorts: Improv 1,881 (Impempe Bb whistle)
Переглядів 6016 годин тому
I continue to lament the fact that Impempe doesn't make whistles any more. In 2022, they claimed they would get back to it in 2024, but they haven't. Ah well. At least I have my two Impempe whistles.
Gnomes on the Run: Improv 1,880 (Artisan Instruments tongue drum)

Fall Migration: Improv 1,877 (Hugh Tracey treble D kalimba)

Spring migration is an exciting time when all the fun birds turn up briefly and then fly away to breed. Fall migration is also an exciting time, but now all the fun birds are various shades of yellow and grey, and winter is on its way. Melancholy is great.

Very mystical sound. Some sort of wooden flute would go well with the Shruti box too. 👍
I do have a nice wooden flute, but I need to work on my embouchure. I don't practice the flute enough.
@@TheImprovyssey You are good at improvs, how are you with playing written tunes?
@@TanzMitMir43 Not bad. I'm classically trained on the flute, so I can sight-read in the treble clef. I've also taken harp lessons for almost a decade, so I'm a lot better at the bass clef than I used to be. I can't really sight-read on the piano (or not very quickly, anyway) but can read the melody and improvise the accompaniment.
@@TheImprovyssey I have been binge watching a lot of old Soviet movies lately (many are incredibly good) and if ever there was a tune made for the kalimba or accordion it's "Polyushke Polye" or "The Song of the Plains" - would you have a go at it on your other channel perhaps. The Kalimba Tabs YT channel has the tabs if you need them. Thanks
@@TanzMitMir43 I'll think about it...though probably not immediately. I'm drowning in marking right now and don't have much time. But we'll see!
I'm curious about your process, do you play music for a while before recording a video or is recording the video the first music you play each day? How much time do you spend playing music each day? Part of me sort of wants to post more frequently or even daily, but I'm on the fence about it.
It depends. In this case, I fiddled around briefly with various whistles before deciding on the D whistle, but I didn't play much before I made the video. However, I played the concertina a few times earlier in the day. I'll often just sit down, turn on the camera, and play. Occasionally, I screw up badly enough that I have to start again. Daily practice can range from just the video to substantially more time spent with various instruments. But at the very least, I get those three minutes in there. It may not seem like much, but I've improved on most of my instruments since I started. Everybody's process is different, but I find it useful that I'll always have that short time every day when I have to play music. It's become a sort of musical diary, which is fun too.
🥰🎶🥰
Very nice! 🙂What model concertina is it?
It's a no-name Italian concertina that cost me $65 on Facebook Marketplace. It was likely sold to a tourist at some point in the second half of the twentieth century. Understandably, it's not the most professional ever instrument, and I do hope to find a nicer Anglo at some point, but all the notes sound, the buttons don't stick, the bellows don't leak, the instrument is mostly in tune with itself, and the buttons hardly ever fall into the body. It's been great to learn the basics on.
It could be worse. The teeny-tiny women from your other channel could have taken up residence in your teeny- tiny teapot in your teeny-tiny apartment. 🙂 I do hope you will tell another scary story for Halloween this year.
Very nice and I love the title.. Is this a pre-existing tune? Or at least were you going off a particular chord progression?
No, this was pure improvisation. I just sat down at the piano and played.
This is very good!
Very nice 👍
That sounds so nice! I must get one of these for my left-handed self. Are they hard to string if one snaps?
I haven't broken a string yet, but I expect it's not too bad. I've never actually broken a zither string, possibly because I'm used to these kinds of tuners and know you have to turn the pegs by TINY increments, not crank away at them, as people used to guitars might do. Each string has a little ball on one end, so the main difficulty would be winding the string around the tuning peg, which is always the most fiddly part of stringing anything resembling a harp.
@@TheImprovyssey thanks so much for the info and tips on tuning. It does sound nice. I'm going to order one today!
@@nightheme365 Hurrah!

Oh, how beautiful! 💗
Wow, that's really nice! 🍁🍂
Good to see you getting back to your other instruments.
Ow ow migraine ow GO AWAY YE LITTLE MAN
Impempe is the Zulu word for whistle, so an apt name for a South African-made product. How long before you are able to return to your piano and harp?
Soon. But my harp really needs to be tuned (a lot), and I may have been avoiding that.
Is the drone from Shruti box? Am I hearing more than one pitch?
@@geneveiveharper Yes, it is, and yes, you are. I've unstopped low F, low Bb, middle F, and middle Bb (it's a three-octave box).
They are indeed a dance. I enjoyed this, it's lovely. Best season of the year imo. PS: A shame about those Impempe whistles. They were nice. Things come and go, unfortunately.
Cute!
The Hugh Tracey has a nice tone. I'm in NYC, and we have lots of Canadian geese. I dont know why, and they never leave.
A lot of them stay here all year as well.
Hopefully, that got rid of the little guy with the pick axe. The Hugh Tracey sounds good! 👍
The little guy with the pickaxe is eternal.
@@TheImprovyssey 😆 sorry to laugh, but I know the feeling!
What’s he digging for?
Pain.
I hope you can get back to a regular sleeping pattern soon Kari. You've had a rough time lately and need to do everything you can to feel at your best again. Fight those night owl temptations and maybe get a blood check etc with your doctor to rule out anaemia etc. Best wishes.
Parts of it remind me of the tune to one of my favorite hymns. Last time I visited the local library I saw a new book by Daniel Levitin: _I Heard There Was a Secret Chord: Music As Medicine._
That was very nice and relaxing. I love that shruti, it goes so well with the whistles. I recognized the whistles without reading the description. I always thought Susato whistles sounded really smooth and unique. Hope your migraine is better now.
All whistles were very nice as was the tune. Poor you and those awful migraines. Have a big virtual hug for keeping on with the improvs despite the headaches. It can't be easy.
This was really pretty. Thank you!
Very gentle and soothing. Thank you for sharing. 🙏
Both cats are putting their ears far back at this one. :D
If you want weird sounds, I see there is a Moog Etherwave Theremin on marketplace. Seller has some nice gear for sale.
Thank you for beautiful music 🎶 ❤
So beautiful!!! Keep up the great work!!
That sound is strangely disturbing even though it shouldn't be. 🙂
That was gorgeous. I love the background drone accompaniment. Is that an MK whistle?
Yep...an MK Pro low D. It's a great whistle.
Nice breath control. I don't get on well with wind instruments. Felt like I was sitting by the banks of the Ganges, on a summer evening. Thank you!
Love it
I love this. It is very soothing
Very nice 👍
That was really nice. There's a touch of urgency...
Beautiful piece here.❤ Enjoy your last day of Summer.
Nice, good to be able to remember everyone to thumb!
You're probably right, especially if talking about the ones with their eyes covered.
love that little bit of melancholia. Lovely.
i also like how you made it sound like something unfolding or opening, like a flower. I might feel that because of your title too...
So beautiful. So uplifting yet soothing at the same time.
What a coincidence! I was just looking at Hugh Tracey chromatics from kalimba magic, went out on a walk, and came back and found your video in my feed. How do you like the instrument? Is it reasonably easy for a reasonably musical person to learn to play the chromatic tines blind? Thanks!
This particular instrument isn't chromatic, but I do have chromatic treble and alto Hugh Tracey kalimbas. I like them a lot, though I find I tend to forget about the chromatic tines on the back. That's just me, though. There are markers (little dots) on the alto kalimba to show you the approximate position of the tines on the back, which is helpful. It's very possible to play chromatically once you get used to the position of the back tines. Caveat: the alto is a pretty chunky instrument, so if you have small hands, reaching the back tines and the front tines simultaneously may be a bit of a stretch.
@@TheImprovyssey Thanks so much! Now I understand why there was so much made in the product descriptions at Kalimba Magic about hand size. (Where did you buy yours, if I may ask? Your HT Kalimba, I mean, not your hands.) And they have the solid-body chromatic Celeste alto model, which is easier for those with smaller hands to play. My hands are pretty large, with long fingers, so I don't really need the help, but like the solid bodies more than the hollow bodies. Having found your channel, I see that we both have a tendency to collect lots of instruments. Making your improvisations seems like a good way to excuse the mountain of musical stuff that results. I've been exploring the kantele, viola, classical kemence (Turkish), salterio cromatico (an in-line, Italian-made, chromatic hognose psaltery, concertina, cross-strung harp, and harmonica. Bravo to you for what you're doing!
@@joanandbrandon I got mine from Kalimba Magic. And yeah, it's hard NOT to collect instruments. My apartment may be a wee bit cluttered.
Relentless glowering is what I'd have if a string broke. Or would that be unrelentless? In any event, I enjoyed this, and must bring out my Taishogoto tomorrow. Today.
do you take requests
It depends. I'm happy to improvise on pre-existing music, but only if it's in the public domain, as I don't want the Licensing Gremlins to descend on me. I've noodled away on public-domain material before (and still have this one guy who always tries to get my videos taken down when I improvise on "Silent Night").
@@TheImprovyssey Yikes, I didn't know they cracked down on copyright infrigements so hard. Seems a little radical for just a cover. Well, if you have time of course could you try to play Lullaby for Outis by Zihvya its by a small creator here on yt so rest assured you won't have to worry about those licensing gremlins😂(presumably) and of course give credits. I really like what you're doing here on youtube and I especially like your kalimba covers and improvisation but is it ok if I offer a suggestion? Feel free to disregard it but maybe tell stories with it or have an animated picture of some sort, some kind of experimentation will bring another element of allure to your videos I feel like.... idk! I'm just some internet person. Cheers! (Sorry for length😭🙏)
@@user-ji1ow4gq8z That's a really neat piece. Unfortunately, it really requires a chromatic instrument; the kalimba is diatonic. I have a couple of chromatic kalimbas, but the way they work wouldn't be conducive to the playing of a piece like that (or, at least, it would be beyond my skill level). But I love the sounds achieved in "Lullaby for Outis." Re. your suggestion: I would definitely do that if I had more time. I'm working on some more involved pieces that come with accompanying images. I've also done some musical storytelling; you can find it on my channel in the "Musical Stories" playlist.
I think a concertina produces creepy carnival music just fine. There's a very creepy movie called Carnival of Souls.
Any excuse to play your Treble D Kalimba is good in my book. It has a very nicely-rounded melodic ringing tone.

Happy to hear of your progress! Fingers crossed that it continues.
What a cool little instrument!
It's definitely one of the cutest instruments I own.
I'm guessing you got that ukulele in Borneo
@@geneveiveharper It's a baglamas: a tiny bouzouki (a Greek instrument). Alas, I didn't get it in Borneo.
Let me guess m, it’s a Bugari?!? 😂😭😒 Lovely playing, you have an amazing sense for structure whilst improvising!!!! Congratulations 🥳
Heh...thanks. I don't know if the terrible toy accordion has a brand name. It is simply the worst.
How about a video of the accordion terrible???! Pretty please?!?
@@ThePianoMan-li5dr I've got one somewhere (I assume it's Improv 386). I'm not sure where the terrible accordion is at the moment. I prefer to play the non-terrible accordion, though I can't right now because I'm recovering from broken ribs and can't lift it.
