      @escyou1 There are a lot of places to buy from and it is worth shopping around. I like clayking.com, and I have a few suppliers within 50 miles of me. If you google pottery supplies and the materials you are looking for, it should pop up. The cost from site to site can be crazy different, so check as many as you can or willing.

    I am thinking about getting one of these inexpensive wheels to learn on. I just am wondering if I make something is there a time limit on getting it into a kiln? Like can I wait till I make a few things and then bring them to a place to get them fired? I have zero knowledge so I would like to know if they will go bad or dry out too much? Should I wrap them or put them in a Tupperware container? Sorry so many questions. Im thinking it might be better to spend my money on a wheel and some online classes and learn by doing but then I dont really have someone to ask these questions. Im thinking of learning by doing and taking online classes. Also can you recommend a book for beginners? Thanks. Best of luck to you on your journey with pottery.

      @Danielleb723 feel free to email me at zebulonpottery@gmail.com if you want to set up an online class or have more questions. I'll try to answer all your questions and a few I think you didn't. 1. Clay needs to be dry before going into the kiln. The long it dries, the better. 2. You need to know what kiln you are renting, how much it costs, and what cone they fire to. This is super important. The cone the kiln fires to will decide what kind of clay you will need to buy. My studio rents a kiln space based on how much room you pottery takes up. $15 min, and you can rent the whole kiln for $150. We fire to cone 06 and cone 6 depending on what's in the kiln. If you don't know what kind of clay you used, I won't fire your pottery. Clay can damage the kiln by melting, costing the studio thousands. Most studios are picky about what they fire for this reason. 3. Clay is usually fired twice. First is called a bisque fire, and pots can be stacked, saving money. The second is a glaze firing, and pots can not touch or they will fuse together. Usually, this firing costs more. 4. Bagging your pottery slows the drying down. It can be helpful if your pots are cracking in the drying process. Starting out, don't worry about it. This is over simplify, but you will figure out when and why to bag through this failing. 5. Pottery is all about managing time. If you miss your window to do something, it is better to start over. For example, if I wanted to make a mug, I would throw a vessel, then bag it for a day. The next day, I would unbag, make a handle, and then attach the handle to the vessel. You can do it all in the same day, but it's hard not to warp or off center your pottery if it's not leather hard. If the clay is too dry, you can not attach the handle successfully. You will be able to get it to stick, but it will crack and fall off. 6. Have fun, and there is always More to learn. 7. I wouldn't buy any books until you know what kind of pottery you want to make. The basics are all over youtube.

    Is the wheel steel pr aluminum? I want to have a go. I could ise clay to fix bat to wheel. Like make a basic plate shape. Cut slices into clay, to allow a suction to grip bat when placed on it, couldn't I? I'd appreciate your thoughts as a complete beginner.

    • @ZebulonPottery
      @ZebulonPottery 19 днів тому

      @mournerambler93 is an aluminum top. You could use clay to attach a bat. My only worry is that the wheel just doesn't have a lot of power. I assume it would work, but I gave this wheel away to a young student, so I can't test it.

      As much time as you can. It's a lot of fun, and the more pots you make, the better you will get. I teach a four week course, and I tell people to expect centering to take you about 20 hours of solid practice to get proficient. Pulling walls has no skill ceiling, so the more you do it, the better you will get.

      @amandaschaefer6982 This one you could slow down to a crawl. The torque/power was the only real problem I had with this wheel. For less than $200, it's worth seeing if you like the hobby before you drop $1100 on a wheel that you won't out grow.

    So looking forward to seeing your journey with this! I had construction done that tore up my whole backyard and ended up getting a TON of wild clay out of it (It has to be at least 8 5-gallon buckets worth, I haven't stored it all away yet). I've been scouring the internet on how to process and fire it ever since. The composition of this clay looks super similar to mine (I'm in NJ), really elastic and soft. It works so well with hand-building, but it collapsed when I worked with it on the wheel. Did you put any sand/temper in it? From what I understand, it could possibly help prevent cracking when drying/firing and also help provide structure so it isn't so floppy when throwing

    • @ZebulonPottery
      @ZebulonPottery 4 місяці тому

      I didn't add anything. I just dug it up and used it. I don't do a lot with wild clay, but there is a lot you can add to your clay depending on where your clay comes up short. As far as know, temper adds strength to the clay and helps with the firing. I assume it would help with throwing too, but I don't know.

    Your die seems to be a simple piece of ply wood and well used enough to a wear mark where it meets the extruded. Have you tried putting a thin piece of rubber in the wear marks? The rubber should act as a seal and prevent the bleed out. You can probably take some liquid gasket maker like permatex and paint it on if you don’t want to cut a piece of rubber.

It's so hard to justify spending money on a wheel to see if I want to pursue pottery, so its good to know that this wheel would be a great way to introduce myself to the craft at home.
