Is Job the Oldest Book in the Bible?
Переглядів 4,5 тис.Рік тому
The book of Job is often considered one of the oldest books of the Bible, and many ask whether Job existed at all. The truth is, the authors of Job grew up reading Jeremiah, Deuteronomy, and Psalms. This video offers background on the historical and literary setting of the book of Job. Bibliography: -Edward L. Hebrew? Ugaritic? What's the difference?
Переглядів 1,7 тис.2 роки тому
Ugaritic is a very ancient language that was discovered in Ras Shamra the 1920s. It's become very helpful for understanding the development of Ancient Semitic languages, and its poetic techniques are similar to the Hebrew poetry found in the Bible. Thank you for the question, and please enjoy this brief response! For this video, I made play-doh in my kitchen and carved out some cuneiform with a...

This Biblical Character Appears in Wonderland (Hint: It's YOU!)

The book of Job is a hip hop musical written during the time of the Persian Empire. But it was written about a legendary figure named Job who goes back a thousand years earlier. The authors had a lot of fun with it, tossing in lotsa clever parody and wordplay. In this video, we'll see how Job breaks the fourth wall in chapter 19, referencing YOU, the reader! In Job 19, our hero says, "I want my...

Alice in Wonderland makes fun of overly moralistic, boring teachers left and right. Isaac Watts was a particularly poignant target. The book of Job also makes fun of overly moralistic and strict interpretations of the Bible. Biblical wisdom literature is particularly skeptical of people who are overly sanctimonious. In this video, we'll talk about 17th Century England, the education system, anc...

Follow the White Rabbit: The Matrix, Wonderland, and the Book of Job
Переглядів 7162 роки тому
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland has become a go-to reference for artists and philosophers who want to address epistemology. Its iconic imagery has become intertwined with questioning our presuppositions. 1999 Cinema questioned our basic assumptions about society. Perhaps the most memorable was the Matrix, which made use of Wonderland's imagery to argue that logic does not always make sense. Th...

Currently waiting for Lin-Manuel Miranda's next epic musical, "J-O-B (Yeah, you know me)."
Hahahahaha! Oh wow, that's so good! I want tickets to this! (Great reference to Naughty By Nature, too!)
@@Dr_Armstrong How grateful I am that you got that reference. I am so tired of correcting myself when I say, "Recently, in the 80s...."
@@tsukareppi hahaha I do the same thing!
What a fantastic overview of Job, and props for your "guest," Sean Connery, as the Voice of God. I just found this channel, and I know I'll be watching many more of your videos. Rap battle...and so it is.
Thank you so much, Susan! I truly appreciate it. You might enjoy my new book, too: "The Book of Job in Wonderland: Making (Non)Sense of Job's Mediators (Oxford Press, 2024). I hope to put up more content soon!
@@Dr_Armstrong I looked that up, and it looks fascinating! Never have I ever been down that kind of rabbit hole!
@@tsukareppi hahahah!! It is a rabbit hole indeed!
Way cool. So Job is written as an older story. Will your book show some of the visual patterns it was written too? I've always assumed job was a rap song.
Yes, my book gets pretty deep into some of the poems and wordplay. So cool that you also noticed the hip hop attitude in Job!
Jeremiah is suffering in a wicked culture despite being righteous. Not too hard to figure out but definitely a warning to us in these times.
😅
Ooooh you said it. It never feels fair, does it?
Love your videos but have some questions about this one: Your background image showing an example of "Aramaic" shows a lot of niqqud on the letters. Niqqud were added by the Masorete monks around 700 to 1000AD. Right? So that must just be a random image. I know the use of various texts is a complicated story as it is but that image threw me off for a second so I verified it and left this note. That being said, I realize that you're giving us these as a one-off for free. So, I appreciate your helpful videos despite my nit-picking. Thank you!
Ah, thank you for the clarifying question. Yes, the image is from a Masoretic Text around 1000 CE. I just used it as an example of how the Aramaic alephbet took over scribal culture for Hebrew language, and left an imprint for generations. I didn't think about how the niqquidot might throw people off. This is a helpful nitpick--I need to think through the way these images are received. Thank you!
Su-weet!
Thank you!!
Looking for the next video on vocabulary
Yes, I hope to get to it soon! My book has kept me busy (If you're interested, please see "The Book of Job in Wonderland: Making (Non)Sense of Job's Mediators" (Oxford Press, 2024). Thank you for your patience!

Hi, Ryan!

Congratulations on 1,000 subscribers!
Wow, thank you so much! It happened without me realizing.
I really enjoyed the first 25. I reviewed them today.
I'm so glad these are helpful. I hope to make some more soon.
Have you seen how the KJV Bible is mathematically encoded
I've heard people say things like this. So interesting.
You are an excellent teacher. I bet you knew that as a child. People love to learn from you. I have had so many teachers who just expected you to already know one hundred percent of the days lesson. They only reiterated what we already knew. Thank you for such personal teaching methods. Im trying to learn Paleo Hebrew. You methods will help.
Thank you so much. This means so much to me.
it was very informative thank you
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

Thank you so much!
This is great! I always imagined the Book of Job as rap battle, especially the mic drop of God vs Job. Actually was talking about it with a coworker today and was wondering if anyone felt the same way. Did you ever do a video discussing the "thunder dome". That is the real deal. I always imagined after God finished talking to Job it starts raining mics and the angels come out to say "Oh no He didn't...." Anyway I definitely will be sharing this with others.
Hahahaha! This is fantastic! I love the food of mic drops. I haven't done a video about the Thunderdome, but it would be a fun one. Job battles his way up a pagoda like Return of the Dragon!
תודה רבה
