Dead Mascots Episode 26 'Cheesasaurus Rex'
I remember being a little disappointed as a kid when i noticed they changed it to just ask. Sick video 🤘
When i was young I'd watch these commercials and beg my parents for a pet cat. After we got one I used to tell my school's assistant librarian about how he'd tap dance and sing and all this crazy stuff after eating the treats like scooby snacks. I wonder if she knew it was made up.
If my cat starts tap dancing, he can have the house!
If he's that talented he can get on broadway and start paying bills, quite frankly.
the part about the news anchors joking about torture made me angry because they shouldn't have done that
Would it be ok if I could make a new intro for Dead Mascots? I feel like the one you use currently needs a bit more pizazz! (Just know if you allow me, I won’t be removing the intro music, just new visuals!)
Do you mean the intro for this miniseries or the actual intro with the regular show? Because I'm kinda emotionally attached to the actual one lol But you can always make something just to let me see what it would be like! I'm always curious in other peoples creativity :)
@@workhorsefilms The regular intro, mostly because the song that goes with it is an absolute banger.
@@larryjpumpernickel It really is, isn't it? lmao Well if you wanna make something and share it with me, please do! I'm not guaranteeing anything, but I am curious!
How does one improve on perfection
@@mattm9090 My sentiments exactly! But I always wanna also push people to use their creativity :)
I noticed the "Go Pacers" button in one of the ads and a reference to referees. Rax was big here in the Indianapolis region and now completely gone from here. This was just before the Pacers heated up in the '90s.
While i agree that the campaign for AJ has "quite" the history . But it's nothing compared to the discrimination and violence behind the scenes. So the mascot on the box or bottle could've been changed to a classy yet modern African American woman.
I'm loving it... with these videos
Dave Thomas is reason the family and I went to Wendy's every so often. But since the mid 2000s, we hardly went. The next mascot should've been the cartoon Wendy, in her 20s with a youthful face and a catchphrase like McDonalds Im Loving It.
Glad Clara got a happy ending. Shame on Wendy's for letting her go just because of a Prego commercial about where the beef was. Why not be mad at Prego for having Clara say those lines.
I had a talking plushie of Gidget when I was a kid :) my grandpa put beer goggles on it.
A very grandpa thing to do, I approve.
I honestly do think that ads lost something when they got rid of mascots. The charm is gone, and now we mostly have boring medicine ads and annoying insurance ads. As for spokespeople, Tom Carvel seems to be the first founder to actually appear in ads. His voice added to the weird charm the Carvel commercials had. However, unlike Dave Thomas or Colonel Sanders, his death may not have been natural, which I find both disturbing and heartbreaking, as nobody even wanted to investigate. A Father's Day commercial from three years ago promoting the Fudgie The Whale cake had someone narrating trying to imitate Tom Carvel's voice, which giving the circumstances, feels incredibly disrespectful.
I've wanted to do an episode on Carvel and Fudgie in general for ages but it just feels like there's nothing to use, production wise. I'll keep trying though.
I laughed way harder than I should have seeing "dead mascots: Dave Thomas" Poor choice of words.
Or the perfect choice of words 😂
Watching this at my shift at Wendy's lol
Now THAT'S stickin' it to the man!
So well done, makes me miss the old school commercials
I absolutely love this series!!! Thank you Cody and Maggie for all of your hard work ❤❤❤
Just checked back to this series, still loving the mascots that are probably decomposing by now.
My dad was a district manager of Wendy's during this ad campaign. At the age of about six, I had a "Where's The Beef" nightshirt, which I believe currently resides in my sister's basement. Not sure how this phrasing was deemed appropriate for kids wear, but before that Wendy's was also "Hot and Juicy", which we also had on shirts.
This is the kind of stuff I love learning from viewers lmao Thank you for your input!
Prego did her dirty with that commercial
This was a fantastic episode, though I both feel bad for Clara Peller but also relieved that in a way, she got the last laugh. Especially given Wendy's MANY troubles over the years, including an inexcusable E. Coli outbreak. Although I wasn't affected by it, hearing about the outbreak ENRAGED me given that Jack In The Box's VERY public outbreak was supposed to change food safety. Sadly, it seems like absolutely nobody, even Jack In The Box themselves [I've seen Yelp reviews and a picture on reddit of fungus growing in a restaurant], seemed to have learned from the outbreak. Since you are covering real spokespeople, will you do Tom Carvel, founder of Carvel Ice Cream one day? His death may have not been natural and that is both chilling and heartbreaking since nobody really wanted to investigate further, meaning the possible culprits got off scott free.
It’s nice to take a look behind this legendary lady! Thanks Cody and Maggie for this episode, keep up the good work loves ♥️
Do i know penny?
That's a question only you can answer, I'm afraid.
@@workhorsefilms i went to school with a penny Hayes in arkansas a long time ago, she always had a good speaking voice, I always thought she’d been good for radio, and this kinda thing
I personally prefer the 1970s Jack In The Box hamburgers jingle "Take Life A Little Easier", which was also made into its own single song, minus the Jack In The Box references of course. 70s era Jack and the Jack In The Box Bunch sang it in the animated At The Park commercial, though the song is most well-known through Rodney Allen Rippy. There's also a Sonny and Cher version as well.
I'll be honest, I am not a huge fan of Timberlake.
No mention of the OG Hannibal Lecter, Brian Cox, being the new jingle singer?
I actually didn't know any of this, so this is so weird and hilarious. The Thai (?maybe?) commercials of them smooching Ronald though.
I'm lovin this :) lol. Really well done sweetheart
@IamNinjaman2 Thank you 😘 Maggie did the heavy lifting. I get to just have fun and read things haha
This is my favorite episode to date! I love the passion you show in this Cody!!
It was a LOT of fun to record! Thank you 🥹🥰
@@zaraya_m You can totally tell! Love you ♥️
This channel really doesn't get the love it deserves
I miss seeing The Travelocity Gnome commercials on TV, they are so nostalgic. Honestly, I feel nostalgic for the early 2000s in general. My local Burger King used to have the BK Kids Club on the playplace and it was my first exposure to them. My mom grew up in the 80s and 90s and she's introduced me to all sorts of fun and unique mascots and we both like to watch mascot-related videos. I don't know if these characters have enough material to make a video on, but could you do the Nabisco mascots one day? There was Cookie Man [a superhero], Nabisco Thing, Oreo Cookie Middleman, the Honey Grahams bee [who despite still being on the box doesn't have much of a prescence], and the one I find the most interesting: Buffalo Bee for the defunct Nabisco cereals Rice Honeys and Wheat Honeys. He was voiced by Mae Questel, who was the voice of Olive Oyl from Popeye, Betty Boop, and another advertising mascot: Hasbro [boy] for Hasbro Toys. Her voice is VERY recognizable [Buffalo Bee in fact wasn't the first bee character she's voiced, she's done a few others], and adds a lot to the character's charm. Buffalo Bee is also somewhat rowdy for a mascot, makes sense given he's a cowboy bee. He also had a few comics by Dell that also introduced his girlfriend named Honey. The story of Rice Honeys and Wheat Honeys itself is interesting given they actually predate Sugar Crisp, but it has a sad ending. Despite him being obscure, Buffalo Bee is one of my favorite mascots. Cowboy mascots are common, but Buffalo Bee is pretty unique. He was also one of the first bee mascots and I think that's pretty neat.
What is with some of these founders and scamming people? I feel really bad for Carrol, he was essentially used as a pawn by the real Eddie. Frankly I think Eddie should've had more time in the slammer, given how many people were affected. It upsets me to learn that Stew Leonard was also a scammer, as I've had an interest in the animatronic characters of Stew Leonard's, specifically The Farm Fresh Five. I still like the characters, but I hope to never step foot in a Stew Leonard's.
This was a great episode, and I highly agree that we shouldn't pretend that these companies' horrid pasts didn't happen. I feel sick knowing the history of this brand and I feel really bad for the actresses who were forced to act as Aunt Jemima. They deserved so much better then to be forced to act as racist mammy character. The Chiquita Banana episode is also going to be interesting yet very hard to watch, given Chiquita's VERY evil past. Their evil rivals even that of Nestle. As for Fritos, I legitimately don't understand why they replaced The Frito Kid with the controversial Frito Bandito. Frito Kid was actually really popular, to the point of having his own comic series and an animatronic at Disneyland's Casa De Fritos restaurant. He appeared in a ton of ads too, but only three are found [two of which are on a video called 1960s/1970s Saturday Morning Commercials Half Hour]. Frito Kid's voice sound like Dick Beals, who also did Speedy Alka Seltzer, but I can't confirm if it was him or not [being a 2000s kid my only exposure to vintage ad mascots were commercial DVDs, vhs, and the internet]. Frito Bandito actually gets a lot worse if you consider that the original recipe for Fritos was actually made by Gustavo Olguin and bought for 100 dollars, which feels really low price for what would become a huge company not to mention pretty scummy of Doolin. I'm not Hispanic so I cannot actually speak about Frito Bandito, but portraying Hispanics as bandits while the recipe for Fritos was actually created by someone of Hispanic descent is legitimately one of the vilest advertising acts I've ever come across.
My friends and I used to quote this all the time in middle school, up to and including in writing assignments. XD
The last reference I remember to Crazy Eddie was in $00pah NiN10Doh! with Crazy Wario's Microgame Emporium. Still pretty funny, IMO. "I'm giving these completely useless and dumbfounded minigames away for *ahemahem* dollars each!" Also, another notable reference to Crazy Eddie: UHF! "I've got so many cars, people come up to me and say 'Hey, Crazy Ernie! Where'd ya get all those cars??'"
There's a joke in the original Clone High where Abe endorses an extremely unhealthy sports drink and later calls it "A shallow ploy by racist mammy breakfast foods to jazz up an old product with extreme marketing." It didn't occur to me as a teenager, but as an adult, I can't help but think it was referencing when they tried to give Aunt Jemima more politically correct appearance in the 80s.

And as always, I'm so proud of you Cody!!! ❤❤❤
Thank you!!! You're so sweet!🥰💜
I'm glad you are bringing more awareness to the less tasteful mascots that have been dropped since… Good job as always, Cody and Maggie 🩷🩷🩷
Unlike the folks upset about these rebrandings, we don't discriminate and will cover any of them! Thanks for the kind words, glad you're enjoying it!
You're very welcome!
This is the exact series I've been looking for LOL, would love to see something on the crunchasaurus or the cool spot
Glad to be providing you with what you want lol Your first suggestion I've never actually heard of, so I'll look into it! The second has been on the masterguide for a while, but I just haven't really gotten around to looking into if there's any history there to work with, so we'll see! Thanks again for the kind words!
Loving the new season. Welcome Cody. I burst out laughing when you had the blooper.
It's really just the remainder of Season 5, but I'm glad you're enjoying it!
I love that you kept your flub in.
An unintentional editing mistake that I made but honestly it adds flavor :)
Hey Cody, I just wanted to say that I’m so proud of you 💜💜💜💜
THANK YOU!! 🥺
Please tone done the background music. It's drowning you out on my headphones.
Hey, yeah, sorry about the somewhat sloppy audio work in this episode. It was the first one I'd done in over a year, so I'm sort of getting my skills back hah Next one will be more clean and properly leveled!
Last time I saw him on tv was my senior year in highschool 2009 😢
You had me at Crazy Eddie.
I'm genuinely hoping this episode can even be produced, because there was SO MUCH information, but I need to have enough content to go with it. We'll see lol
