So very proud of you guys David! You may not remember me, I was one of the schedulers you spoke with probably 5 times a week back when we were both with that other awful interpretation services provider. Gloria and I used to drive you crazy, lol. Anyway, this is such an amazing story and I'm so happy for you guys and your success and truly admire your passion and commitment to helping our non-english speaking community. It hits close to home as my husband is non-English speaking and I'm bilingual in Spanish as a result. It makes 100% difference when there is a quality interpreter to assist at any appointment, and you've contributed to that a great deal! Super awesome to see how far you've come. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the comment! You're absolutely right, becoming a skilled interpreter takes time and dedication. Our 60-hour course provides a solid foundation to launch your interpreting journey. It covers essential medical terminology, interpreting ethics, and healthcare setting knowledge. While the course can't make you a master interpreter in 60 hours, it gives you the confidence to start building your skills. If you're interested in learning more about the path to becoming a medical interpreter, this course is a great place to begin.

Very interesting podcast and good to see that some progress has been made over the decades, but we still have a long way to go. I have a close family member who was on an stroke ward run by the NHS recently (UK state medical service). It's too far for me to visit and we are both hard-of-hearing, so I was really pleased that the ward nurses had a couple of tablet devices we could use to call with video and subtitles. (On the downside, the staff managed to lose her hearing aids while she was in hospital, but they were promptly replaced.) But then she was transferred to a rehab care home where they only have the ward landline. It's cordless, so they took it to the cafeteria where my family member was and we really struggled to have a conversation with just audio, plus all the background noise of the cafeteria. Nightmare scenario for hard-of-hearing trying to stay connected as a patient and for hard-of-hearing trying to support their loved ones. Luckily, there are relatives close enough to visit and able to organize a private device so that we can connect. Thirty years ago, there would have probably been one public payphone in the whole building for those who could walk to it and manage the coins, so things have got better in many ways. In the modern world, communication technology should be available in the healthcare environment and staff should get basic training in how to use it and help the patients with it.

Hi Lee, Thank you for taking the time to watch and respond to this important podcast. We agree with you that while there has been some progress, there is definitely a long way to go and the experience of your family member is proof of that. There is still a lot of education needed on many levels to create true communication access, and Linguava is committed to doing our part.
