      The main problem bujinkan has is its 8 schools in 1. If every school demands a lifetime of study for true mastery, you need 8 lifetimes, hence the need for the expansion of the 10th Dan into 15. As a side note, the development of taijutsu in bujinkan creates a system of movement that allows one to fast track learning all modes of movement of every school. No other system of martial arts has this because no other is this vast.

    "Modern Togakure-ryu and various historical claims are taught by Masaaki Hatsumi (Takamatsu's successor) and the Bujinkan organization. Criticism regarding the historical accuracy of the Bujinkan's claims of lineage have arisen from several issues of the Bugei Ryūha Daijiten: The 1978 version of the Bugei Ryūha Daijiten states that Takamatsu's Togakure-ryu "genealogy includes embellishments by referring to data and kuden about persons whose existence is based on written materials and traditions in order to appear older than it actually is."[38] The 1969 version of the Bugei Ryūha Daijiten states that Takamatsu's Togakure-ryu "is a genealogy newly put together by Takamatsu Toshitsugu, who made use of (took advantage of) the popularity of written materials on ninjutsu after the Taishō era" and that "there are many points where it has added embellishments, it has made people whose real existence is based on written records older than is actually the case, and so it is a product of very considerable labor".[39] The 1963 version of the Bugei Ryūha Daijiten states of Takamatsu's Togakure-ryu "this genealogy refers to various written records and oral transmissions and there are many points/places where embellishments have been added and people appearing in the genealogy are also made older than they actually are".

      Embellishment is pretty common in japanese history and martial arts. To believe some masters had some martial illumination and spontaneously created a whole complex system is not different than believing fairytales. Not to mention you can put in doubt pretty much any "last ninja" story, as Fujita Seiko's Wadaha ryu can be doubted as an actual ninjutsu school or more contemporary Kawakami Jinichi who literally claims to have learned his art from a literal Sengoku era style ninja in the middle of the 20th century. Anyway, we're talking here about a book about Gyokko ryu kosshijutsu, not Togakure ryu.

    • @JustinPrime85
      @JustinPrime85 5 місяців тому

      @@Hachizukatenzo I'm aware of this. An embellishment is still bad because if you're history was real and started when you say it did there would be no need to embellish it. Just don't say your lineage is that long to attract students to your dojo because that is a dishonest buisness practice.

    • @Hachizukatenzo
      @Hachizukatenzo 5 місяців тому

      @@JustinPrime85 Honestly, I don't think it actually attracts practitioners if you have this famous name in your lineage or this nice tale to explain the Genesis of the school. Most people don't care. But if you know Japanese history, you know rulers like Toyotomi or Tokugawa suddenly claimed descending from ruling clans from the Kamakura era (if I don't confuse it) to support their right to rule. To me, it's closer from a cultural habit than anything.

    • @JustinPrime85
      @JustinPrime85 5 місяців тому

      @@Hachizukatenzo To be fair, I don't feel inclined to debate with practitioners anymore. I've spoken with many practitioners over the years and they don't neccesarily care about the history being fabricated and I concurred that if they find the techniques and tactics valuable then they should train in them. The tendancy with members of these organizations is they boast and brag about their history until it's time to actually prove it then it's "not important". Don't claim the history of something if you cannot back up and prove your claims. I prefer historically validated sources. You don't have to worry about things that have been proven to be historical fact as opposed to relying on guesswork and these suspect organizations and their dubious historical lineage claims.

    • @Bevallalom

      To be honest we don't really know the real lineages of almost any styles. Be it Japanese or Chinese. History was altered so many times and rewriten by "winners". And so on. Even if you have written text you can not be sure it is telling the true. Nowdays if someone wants to learn ninjutsu it means learning martial art and not espionage, sabotage techniques etc... I find these debates pointless.

    Dr. Friday: These are just 3 out of 9. Problem is that if he is the 34th soke it means logically that there where 33 more sokes before him. If this school were a modern one it means they'd have to switch every almost three years which didn't happen. That might be persuasive logic if there were any documentation to substantiate Hatsumi's claim to 33 predecessors. But there is none--as I noted earlier, no document for the Togakure-ryu that predates the Meiji period (or rather, none that survived the scrutiny of independent experts) (see 2 above, my insert). Moreover, the genealogies claimed by Hatsumi (and by his teacher Takamatsu To*****ugu) are highly suspect. The Katori-Shinto-ryu and the Kashima-Shinryu, two of the oldest classical bugei schools in Japan, are currently in their 20th and 19th generations. The Owari branch of the Yagyu Shinkage-ryu is in its 21st. The Jikishin-kageryu is in its 18th. All of these schools date back to the late 15th or mid 16th century, the very dawn of the organized bugei ryuha phenomenon. How is it that the Togakure-ryu has passed through 34 generations. And why has the Kumogakure-ryu passed though only 14? The Takamatsu-Hatsumi genealogy for the Shinden Fudo-ryu traces things back 25 generations to the mid 11th century, which is at least 400 years earlier than any historian accepts the existence of any bugei ryuha--and at least two centuries before the scale and organization of warfare in Japan would make espionage activity valuable enough for anyone to seriously consider developing methods for carrying it out. Hatsumi's titles to most of the ryuha he claims to be soke for come from Takamatsu To*****ugu, who in turn claimed to have inherited them from Toda Masamitsu. It's worth noting, in this context, that in the third edition of the Bugei ryuha daijiten Watatani Kiyoshi stated that Takamatsu (who was, BTW, a personal friend of his) had created his "ninpo" ryuha and teachings from "ninja-gokko" ("childhood ninja games")..."

      @@user-lq2yi8op7w I can use various sources to corroborate what I am saying. I don't need Dr. Karl Fridays opinion. He was just questioning their lineage claims, but many historical researchers in Japan do. Ask the Koryu groups what they think of Hatsumi's claims. He is just one of many. Why would I have an arguement of my own? I am not qualified nor do I have the academic credentials to do that. I can only go off of the information that has been provided which is alot. You cannot claim you are a Ninja Master without providing any proof. Where is his proof? I don't see you providing proof or coming with a better argument. Besides it has already been stated the lineage is fabricated by their own membership. I dont need to debunk it because it was already admitted to me that it is. He's allegedly a Ninja Master prove it. Lol

    "Modern Togakure-ryu and various historical claims are taught by Masaaki Hatsumi (Takamatsu's successor) and the Bujinkan organization. Criticism regarding the historical accuracy of the Bujinkan's claims of lineage have arisen from several issues of the Bugei Ryūha Daijiten: The 1978 version of the Bugei Ryūha Daijiten states that Takamatsu's Togakure-ryu "genealogy includes embellishments by referring to data and kuden about persons whose existence is based on written materials and traditions in order to appear older than it actually is."[38] The 1969 version of the Bugei Ryūha Daijiten states that Takamatsu's Togakure-ryu "is a genealogy newly put together by Takamatsu Toshitsugu, who made use of (took advantage of) the popularity of written materials on ninjutsu after the Taishō era" and that "there are many points where it has added embellishments, it has made people whose real existence is based on written records older than is actually the case, and so it is a product of very considerable labor".[39] The 1963 version of the Bugei Ryūha Daijiten states of Takamatsu's Togakure-ryu "this genealogy refers to various written records and oral transmissions and there are many points/places where embellishments have been added and people appearing in the genealogy are also made older than they actually are".[40] Watatani questioned whether there was enough evidence that Togakure ryū was an unbroken tradition since the 12th C, but he did not doubt that Togakure ryū was an art that pre-dated the Meiji period."
