Not refueled in 1980 Comprehensive Overhaul. Core 3 in both plants lasted from 1970 to 1995 decommissioning.

The story jumps from 1967 to late 1970s. That missed the ship's force assisted overhaul in Mare Island.from 69-71. I watched from the BOQ as it sailed in, in 69,. I had orders to report after finishing guided missile school. We finally got to Nam in 72, and we were there when HiPhong was mined and Jane was on the AA gun in Hanoi (I was denied a missile shot because it could hurt Jane). I did transit bridge watches, but was down in CIC when we were on the line in the Gulf of T. I was a reserve belly button, and got out in late 1972. I got to do a Dinning-In, in Singapore, I think. I never got salty, almost, but things needed to be shot at., The guys in my division had told me they would protect me, Suddenly I was 25 and had to grow up, go to work. I thought 3 years in the Navy would never end, then it was over, I was on the carrier waiting to get to my flight to LA via Clark.

On the Tommy-T 82-84. Reported just before the Bremerton COH in July 1982 departed Dec 1984 a few months after the overhaul was complete.E/RE divo, EOOW. Completed my engineer quals on board. During the daily outlying engineering space tours, while in overhaul and drydock I was able to inspect the shaft space by entering the port shaft ally via the inspection cover in the missle magazine crawling through the shaft ally (shafts were out for overhaul) onto the scaffolding back in via the stbd shaft and out the missile magazine again. There were a few good things about overhaul but not many. FYI I'm sure most crew members noted the pictures in the narative are inconsistant. CIWS was installed in the 82-84 COH, easy way to get a date on the photos.

I was a JO in Weapons, FA Division Officer, when Hai Phong harbor was mined. The day before the Weapons Officer had us all meet in the office, we were told to pick a few DSOTs, daily system operability tests and run them. Early in the morning we went to missile quarters (not GQ), and I went to my watch station in CIC. We watched on our 32 repeater as our planes flowed in and out dropping mines. No MIGs came up to oppose, we were really disappointed. We waited a while then went back to our normal station areas in the Gulf. A more interesting event was when a DLG south of us fired five or six Terrier missiles at radar ghosts. We looked at the area of the hostile symbols on the NTDS network that had been placed by the DLG, but we saw nothing with our 32, phased array radar. Our evaluator told them there were no targets, but they fired anyway. The next day the DLG got sent to Subic, or somewhere, finally came back with a new CO. This happened in about 1972, probably on my last line period. Does anyone remember Chief Smith (we had two), or Frank, THE Frank?

My dad was on the Truxtun in the mid to late 70’s until around 1981 when we lived in San Diego. I remember going to visit him on the ship when he had duty. It was pretty cool. He worked on the nuclear reactors.

CLG-5 1972-1974 BM3 1st division

I am a Plankowner for Paul F Foster DD-964 (EW2). Served onboard USS Elliot DD-967 (EW1), USS Nicholson DD-982 (EWC), and USS Kidd DDG-993 (LT - LDO). So I'm very familiar with the class, with lots of water under the keel onboard these ships. My favorite was the Kidd.

Former US Navy sailor technician on ship board AN/SPS-48 3D radar maintenance and operations on TRUXTUN CGN-35 79 to 82. Left service and.went to work at the radar mfg ITT Gilfillan. Job title was logistics field rep. Great job.

DDG-17 USS Conyngham shame all but 1 sister ship was scrapped. The last one is in Germany I just wish my dad would be able to see the Molders again as a US sailor.

Proudly served on the Tommy T from Oct ‘84 - May ‘88 in RC division. Thanks for highlighting the ship’s history. Man a lot of memories. Guys have posted some of them already. I’ll add the 1986 trip through the Suez Canal was eye opening with burnt out tanks from the 6 Day war and all the ex Pats on the Egyptian bank waving the 🇺🇸. That moment along with Anchorage port of call some of the most patriotic moments I have experienced in my life. That early morning storm in the Med on our way to Toulon staring at tank gauges bouncing around and Mechanic hanging a nut from a string in the maneuvering viewing window 🤢 Don’t forget the whale our dive team/swimmers freed from a fishing net😏 I didn’t even know our 1988 Iranian conflict had the name Operation Praying Mantis until a few years ago. She was a good ship that we rode hard all over the world and withstood the test of time.

I was an IC3 aboard the USS Leftwich DD984 ( Wicked, wich of the west) from 87 to 90, made a lot of friends on board. Also on board during operation nimble archer in 1987(Oct 19th). I was sad to see the might Leftwich go down like that. Fair winds and following seas to all spruance class distroyers.

We were out in the Baltic Sea on a 3 month Northern Pacific tour in 87(?). The hardest part was when we faced a wicked storm. The highest roll was clocked at 49 degrees. Easier to walk on the bulkheads than the deck. Shit was flying left and right. Bolted down lockers getting torn off walls. The weirdest part however was our Sonar Operators (we all worked together as Operations Intelligence) picked up something they couldn't explain. A big sonar blob that seemed to engulf the ship. When we got back to port we went straight into drydock. The sonar dome is covered in a thick rubber material. The inspectors found huge teeth embedded in the rubber. Sent it off to a lab. The final conclusion was that those 'teeth' were what you would find on each sucker of each tenticle of a common squid, but thousands of times bigger. Freaky stuff bro.

Imagine claiming to be the most powerful army in the world while beating up on a country that was heavily sanctioned for years, and had no means to fight back. It's like a bodybuilder being proud of himself for beating on a woman or a kid.

After the 1975 Fire, Belknap Was the only one in this class. Then When it was 6th Fleet Flag Ship was changed even more. I was on the Belknap (1983-1987)
