CPKC Holiday Train 2024 - Chase Across Maine and Eastern Quebec on November 22nd & 23rd
On November 22, 2024, we would set out from home early and head north in hopes of making it to Vanceboro for the CPKC Holiday Train. As we were closing in, we realized that they had left McAdam, New Brunswick earlier than expected and were already closing in on the border. Making use of this information, we decided it would be best to wait for the train at Lambert Lake and proceed to chase them down EMR’s Mattawamkeag Subdivision.
After about a 20 minute wait, the chase was on. We’d chase them down to Mattawamkeag with no issues, and then proceed to wait for them at Chester. Little did we know that we’d be waiting longer than expected, as the train would hold at Kirby siding for a bit due to issues with the 6416. After working around the issue, they were back on the move. They’d be setting out 6416 at Hardy Pond, leaving 2249 to lead for the rest of the trip over EMR trackage and onto CPKC trackage.
We’d later make our way over to the Moosehead East Subdivision at Greenville to wait for the train and chase them to Jackman. After seeing them at Greenville, we’d see them once more at Long Pond after a failed attempt with catching them at Tarratine.
The next day, we’d start out of the hotel early enough to stop in Jackman for breakfast and make our way to the border while taking into consideration the slick conditions ahead. It was raining at the hotel, though it only took a matter of minutes for it to start snowing as we made the climb towards Jackman. We’d briefly intercept the train at Jackman after they got the Canadian Crew on board, and then we’d head for the border. We’d wait for them at Lac Mégantic, and then proceed to Marston. We’d make sandwiches and wait for the Holiday Train.
I heard a distant horn from the Holiday Train, and it was only a couple minutes later that the crossing activated. It turned out that we had another train coming from behind me, quickly found to be 120 bound for Maine. I’d turn the camera and instantly be met with them rolling down the hill as they made their way towards Nantes for a meet with the Holiday Train.
Not too long after came the Holiday Train, and it turned out to be a smooth chase the whole way to Sherbrooke. We moved out from the snow and chased through light rain for most of the remainder of the chase. After Sherbrooke, we began to make our way home as we had a nearly five hour drive ahead of us.
Happy holidays! Hoping everyone watching has a great rest of their year!

awesome video of this holiday train nice catch catching the CP stacker too
I still can’t believe this wreck happened in my state even if it was hours away. Even still I’m glad the crew survived and I’m not gonna cry over a heritage unit being destroyed especially because it’s a random locomotive painted in an old scheme AND CPKC has multiple units in the maroon paint job.
Another section of the B&M to fade into history.
It’s crazy you caught the train just before the derailment. It’s too bad that 7011, was scrapped, and just after the merger, too, but I’m glad the crew is alright. Am I able to use this footage in a couple of videos about the wreck (crediting you of course)?
@@MangoTheOne Feel free to use it. Thanks for asking!

I totally wasn't there with you 🤭
True 😂
Good catch! What time are they normally through? I’ve only managed to catch a song daytime freight down here in Wells, I was considering pulling a nightshift trackside.
@@TravelingRailfanThey’re out of Rigby between 19:30 and 22:00 on most nights.
@@MaineCentral321 oh wow that’s not nearly as late as I was expecting. Are the northbound s the train I keep seeing in the morning then?
@@TravelingRailfan yup, they tend to get to Rigby in the late hours of the night or really early in the morning.

This is great stuff, I just got up here for the winter, any places you’re recommended around southern Maine to railfan?
Thanks! Daylight trains can be hard to come by in certain parts of southern Maine lately. South (timetable west) of Rigby has been a toss up lately with freight activity being unpredictable. East of Rigby, on the other hand, typically has 1-2 eastbounds in the morning hours, as well as a westbound. There is also a local that serves industries in the Portland area during the day. There are some Facebook groups that may be helpful as well, though some of them are unfortunately set as hidden. Hope this helps!
Nice! I’m glad CSX is assigning the AC44s to former Pan Am trackage as in my opinion those are very reliable and much better to see than Gevos all the time!
Can I use a part of this video (optional)
Nice video. That train seemed to be moving at a pretty good pace. What happened to 4266 and 4268? And is CSR going to be expanding into maine
Thanks! 4266 and 4268 are both at North Conway and occasionally are placed onto the trains. Unlikely that Conway Scenic is expanding to Maine, but time will tell.
Did they just buy 2310 and 2308 from finger lakes rail road
Midcoast is a subsidiary of Finger Lakes. 2308 and 2310 still use FGLK reporting marks.
@@MaineCentral321 oh ok I did not know that

Sucks to see this beauty destroyed but at least the crews were okay
Sad to see 7011 destroyed but as long as the crew was not harmed in the wreck then that’s good.

A terrific film ! What are the engine types ? Thank You 👍

The Disaster Caused By Kereta Alien Indonesia And Their Minions With Their Antics. KAI From Indonesia Must Be BLAMED For THIS!
What Disaster ??
The three engines and about half a dozen cars derailed just up the line. The engines were destroyed, especially the lead unit. The crew was still able to make it out with minor injuries.
Maravilhoso !! Os carros são Pulmann ?🇧🇷
Thanks! While Conway Scenic does have some Pullman cars, I don’t believe than any of these are Pullman.
Only thing left of 7011 is bits of the cab and the radiator. Glad the crew made it out safe.
While I am saddened in losing 7011. CP can choose another unit to paint up. The crew getting out alive just means in my book the locomotive in the end did it's job. Rest easy big girl you will be missed.
Great Catch CP 7011 The Engineer Crew Made it Out Alive of A Train Wreck Keep Upset CP 7011 He Fail Crash Total Loss is Sad Day
Gonna quit using rail keep wrecking.
Great video !! How fortunate that you were able to film part of the last run of these destroyed units. James.
Do you ever know if this locomotive was a total loss?
Yes, all that is left is the radiator.
I'll miss 7011. I hope they can manage to fix her and put her back in operation. Very glad no one hurt.
Pretty much everything, but the cab was obliterated in the crash
So Sad CP 7011
Just saw photos which got released, all thats left is the nose
There goes the paint job!
I'm grateful the crew made it out alive of that wreck. I get a lot of people are upset about 7011 becoming a total loss but at least several other heritage units like her still exist. You can't replace a person like you would a loco.
Wow Is Sad CP 7011
I love watching this Live cam. When will it be back?:
It went back up right after you commented.
You never know. video recording CN switching cars at Port Saint John Potash terminal the last thing I expected was a derailment.
An "Incredible Catch" by Maine Central Railfan!!!! This Brownsville, Maine CP crew was incredibly lucky indeed! In fact, the durable Progress Rail / EMD cab on the SD70ACU may be exactly what saved them on that horrible day. It is unfortunate we lost the first two of those locomotives on that day (7011 and 7005). I'm happy I got to see them both several times during their short life. 🧐
