      I honestly don't know if this is just attributable to mental laziness... it isn't even a long word for someone to say they misread it because they can simply read it a second time in any case. On the other hand, if the problem is not that they misread it I just don't know how someone (who speaks English) can think the letter a can make an "ee" sound...

    A few points for today, first off: unit merging. You can merge units of the (exact) same type. Select the first unit of its type in the army, hold shift, select the last unit of the same type, merge. Same principle works in battle, but you can also just drag and drop units during deployment to suit your needs. For example, you could alternate sword and spear infantry. When you select the first and the last unit by holding shift and drag them out, they will deploy in the order you created. Second: food. The great city of Mycenae (usually pronounced My-See-Nee, or My-See-Ney, I think), is a food province. Unfortunately the AI hasn't build any of the corresponding buildings for food production. Demolish a few structures you don't need and rebuild to your needs. Third: the enemy Ai was hesitant to attack because you were the one on the offensive. Also: you lost a gold tier chariot when you autoresolved the muck up battle. Autoresolve hates large units with small model count, i.e. the chariots. Fourth: the "Inspect Stockpiles" thing comes up because you got a position at court that let's you do so

    Your army has limited manpower to build siege equipment, the more you build, the longer it takes. The larger (and more professional) army will be able to build stuff faster. Slingers can be very good, especially early on, as they outrange low tier archers. They are not very "killy" so you want to focus fire unshielded, low armor units. A "Cadmean victory" is the equivalent of a "phyrric victory" in other total war games, named after Phyrrus of Epirus who won a few battles against the romans when they were still just a regional power. He won the battles but at very high cost. He supposedly said something like: a few more of those victories and we loose the war. As Pharao is set a couple hundred years earlier, there is no Phyrrus and thus you get a "cadmean victory". This one is named after Cadmus, the founder of the greek city Thebes, and fulfills the same premise - a ruinous victory.

    Haven't played a radious mod before but my is it's basically Pharao enhanced? Anyway, you can arrange marriages with other factions on the diplomacy screen. You could contact Troy and see if they have a chryseis or briseis on offer, for example. Would fit the bill with Achilles. Also, I hate to be that guy, but it's pronounced something like: Ith _ tha _ ka When your units didn't attack those archers in the end, they might have lost line of sight when they moved towards them, basically the Ai doesn't seem to have object permanence

  • @unvelo6725
    @unvelo6725 2 місяці тому

    So you want to besiege a city. Unfortunately you are in the bronze age and proper siege engines aren't a thing yet. You have two options: up and over or through. Now luckily, there are some tools for that. Number one: the humble ladder. Quick to build but your troops will have to clamber up one at a time, which puts you at a disadvantage once they get to the top. Better send someone who is really good at killing or really good at surviving. Number two: the magnificent siege tower. Same idea as before, but you start of at the right height and just jump over, accompanied by a whole lot of friends. Number three: tunneling. If you don't want to waste your energy with all that climbing, get diggin. Unfortunately tunneling under the foundations of a massive wall takes ages. Precious time the enemy could use to reinforce their position. (Never tried it myself, just takes too long) Number four: Old Reliable - the battering ram. Not over, not under but right through the gate with just a bit of poking. Surprisingly effective and quick but you'll catch the odd arrow or stone on your way to the gate. ... There might be a fifth way by burning down the gate, certain units might be able to do that, but I'm not sure this is a thing in pharao. Also, put archers on hold position (the shield icon on the bottom bar) or they'll try to catch up with any target they were told to fire at, no matter who or what is in the way. The gates probably opened because you had enough men on this section of the wall to take control. Or it's the infamous "gate bug" that has plagued Total War games since the dawn of time, but it didn't look like that. Usually only a few models get through and the gates close again.

    • @JayPixl
      @JayPixl 2 місяці тому

      yeh the gate opening was strange, but i did choose to dig under as one of the options but couldn't figure out what it meant

      The Mesopotamians have multiple Sapper units that can break down gates in seconds, allowing you to attack on the first turn without siege equipment.. Other non-chariot units can slowly knock down gates, but it is tiring and takes like ten minutes, only worth doing if you lost your siege towers.

  • @unvelo6725
    @unvelo6725 2 місяці тому

    As you probably have noticed by now, the food deficit isn't sustainable if you don't fight and win every single turn, probably multiple battles at this point. Taking over food settlements should have priority, while other ressources can be used for bartering your way out of this. At the moment, however, your best bet is to disband some troops and get the deficit down to manageable levels. If you go into the red, you'll take loads of attrition, btw. The battle against Knossos will be tough. What you see on the map at the moment is just a few of their settlements, they probably own all of crete down south across the sea. You can check on the diplomacy tab who has how many settlements, even if you don't see all of it. It's a good way of estimating a factions overall strength. That and the yellow/red bar under their name during the end turn thingy, once you "know" them.

    A point on Outposts: they can be very powerful tools and provide bonuses when your armies interact with them. Some lower upkeep cost, some give you more movement range for a few turns or increased ambush chance. The shrines to the gods are the most varied as ttheir effects depend on the god worshipped here. In addition many outposts refund 50 % of spent movement, which comes in handy if you need to get around the map in a hurry. You might have been able to fight that 20 stack threatening Pylos right away if you had travelled along the outposts. The most important enemy outposts are their watchtowers and forts, the AI loves to stack forts with units that will reinforce a city in a siege. Take them out before you attack a city, makes life a lot easier Second point on the gods: You get bonuses for your army when you interact with an outpost shrine. Once you have build enough shrines (and temples in major cities) , you may devote one of your generals to the god, granting you yet more bonuses. Right now you're worshipping poseidon, a sea god. I don't know the specifics but he probably helps with getting around on the water. There are other gods that might be a tad more useful to you, which is why you can unlock more worship slots in the tech tree. Poseidon and Odysseus famously don't get along, it's an entire Odyssee honestly, so you might want to check out other options at some point. Last point for today: ambush stance. If the AI is being coy and doesn't want to fight you or if you really need and army to get out of that city, use ambushes. They have a good success rate in Pharao (depending on the terrain), the enemy will not see your army and move around like nothing is going on. Bonus points if they trigger the ambush, it usually ends in a slaughter. Even outnumbered you may defeat a superior force this way. Extra bonus points if you use a juicy target to lure the enemy in, like an undefended settlement or a minor army with only a few units. The AI usually cannot resist the opportunity.

      Odysseus and Poseidon don't get along because the son of the latter said, "I'm gonna eat you and all your men" (not in a s*xual way) and Odysseus said, "You're eating nobody" before putting said son's eye out. Sadly, simply for this act, Odysseus is accused of blasphemy by the gods and Zeus agrees: Poseidon will hound Odysseus and his men until Odysseus is the sole survivor of his fleet, protected by none other than Athena, Odysseus' patron goddess and Zeus' own daughter. There are differing accounts of how Odysseus met his death. Some say he tried to make peace with Poseidon, but failed. Poseidon cursed him to be killed by a boy he fathered with a sorceress who once had him trapped.

Generally in the English-speaking world it's pronounced "I-thuh-kuh", with a short I sound and stress on the first syllable (there is a city in New York state by this name). In modern Greek it's "Ithaki", pronounced "i-THY-kee", which is a little closer to what this guy managed. More egregious is his pronunciation of "Achaeans" which comes out as "AH-kuns" somehow, which isn't even close. In English this is pronounced "uh-KAY-uns", whereas in modern Greek it would be "ah-KHY-ahs", with the "KH" consonant sound something a bit between an English H and a German CH. Good job, jumping those two little armies was definetly the right choice. About the morale dip: once a unit routs, it will give all other units around it debuffs to morale as they see their allies running away. Having lots of squishy units, like the archers, in a big blob can be very dangerous that way. They'll take lots of damage quickly, morale drops, they run, the debuff kicks in, another squishy unit wavers and runs, now even the melee guys dip down and sooner or later you have a cascade. You got lucky there, I think.

      Yeah. Chain routs were Volound's favourite way of dominating Shogun 2 .... back when he was a strong TW player and not put off by Rome 2. Assassinating the generals also helps in tamping the morale of the foe down and winning the field. JayPixl wobbled a bit at Pylos, but surrounding the enemy warlords and whittling them down was the right call. A pity he could not take the rally points in the acropolis proper, they'd have killed the enemy morale even further.

    Bit of an in depth thing today. On the battlefield side of things the name of the game is: maximize damage, minimize losses. You’re decent at the first bit and less so on the latter part. Take the first battle you had today. You correctly identified the choke point as the strongest position on the map and decided to move your entire force there. In and of itself not a bad decision, but not the ideal choice. While your entire melee force faced off against the chariots you got peppered by their javelin throwers. That’s what did most of the damage in the end. The chariots are big and scary but if they run into a line of braced spearmen supported by archers, they are fucked. The main threat to your men wasn’t the chariots, it was the ranged units but you couldn’t get to them because your entire force was occupied at the choke point. Take a closer look at the landscape. On the left side to the choke point are some woods, up on the higher ground. You could easily hide some units up there and still hold the choke point with a few spear units and your ranged guys, more then enough to hold off the chariots. Now, as soon as the enemy melee units are committed to your front line, you break cover and charge their ranged units. You don’t need to kill them outright necessarily, you just need to chase them away and stop them from shooting your guys to bits. One or two fast units, even infantry, can keep them on the run pretty much indefinitely while your main force deals with the chariots and their melee infantry. Once those are gone, you can mop it all up at your leisure. Minimize losses, maximize damage. Another small side note: it’s not always ideal to kill the enemy general, sometimes it is better to weaken them instead. No army in the modern total war games can exist without a general. In turn that means if you don’t wipe the entire force from the map, they will just spawn a new general - an entire gold tier unit at full strength - on the next turn, no matter how bad you beat them last time. If you just weaken the existing general however, the follow up battle and/or autoresolve will be a lot kinder. The exception is high level enemy generals that provide tons of bonuses to their armies, Those need to die. A level 1 general is just another unit, albeit a good one, a level 20 Lord of War is a menace that needs to die, period. Third: raze watchtowers and fortresses before committing to a siege (unless you have a good, high tier army), as these outposts will provide the main settlement with additional garrison units. Get rid of them and your conquest will be much easier going forward.

    If you want to get somewhere fast you can put your armies in forced march, bottom left corner right opposite the level up button. There are other stances too, like encamp for replenishment in enemy territory if you want to get back to strength quick and not wait for replenishment you can merge units of the same type (at a loss in experience) and then recruit until you're back at 20. The autoresolve/balance of power calculation can be a bit wonky and does not necessarily reflect the reality of a battle, for example autoresolve assumes that missile units use all their ammunition (at least in Warhammer, not sure about pharao but it's probably the same)

    Watching your battle reminds me of a bad dream where your eyes are cloudy, your mouth is paper dry, your hands are soft as feathers, but feel heavy as lead. You want to shout as loud as you can for everyone to attack, but all that comes out is orders to individual units to attack one after the other so everyone can get a face full of arrows. Your huge advantage of chariots is used to chase every new shiny object that presents itself instead of finishing the archers.

    • @JayPixl
      @JayPixl 2 місяці тому

      Haha yeh that what it feels like in the battle 🤣🤣

  • @unvelo6725
    @unvelo6725 2 місяці тому

    Another day, another hint: if you press spacebar during battles you can see all active orders, range of units, etc. It will also remove the tree cover so that you can see what's going on underneath the canopy. Also, there is a slow down and pause button for a reason, if you get overwhelmed you can slow things down or stop, examine the situation, give orders to your units and resume. Third, if you think this would take away from the general action of the episode you could just fight the battle, save the replay and comment on that. Nice part about that is that you can get in close to the action, requires a bit of editing though. Fourth, there should be some units, double handed axes or clubs usually, that are great at running down ranged units. You need something to disrupt their ranged play.

    Another tip for diplomacy and bartering, it's a bit counterintuitive but red means: "I have plenty of that, don't need more", while green means "I want more". You can hover over each ressource in the barter screen to see the exact descriptions. Also: you can increase the duration of the agreement to up to 10 turns, same screen

    playing the same campaign. what makes it hard for me is the food mechanics: I have one and a half army, two generals. When both are on the march, I loose up to 2,7 k food per turn even after using the trading outposts and prayers. Trading, raiding and battle-loot keep me from turning into a negative. During peace times, I restock by putting my forces in forts and dissolving others. I don’t understand how factions with just two cities can recruit two fully stacked armies and more and then have no interest in food in the diplomacy-screen.

    • @JayPixl
      @JayPixl 2 місяці тому

      Pretty difficult, while the AI generates 2 armies every turn with one city haha

    • @unvelo6725
      @unvelo6725 2 місяці тому

      The AI cheats, it's a Total War staple. But at least in this game you can customize the campaign in unprecedentet detail, I think AI recruitment and upkeep is among the options

    Two tips: you can customize the speed of the end turn so the armies don't move like snails, there is a little camera icon on the top left corner for that. Second: if the ai proposes a deal you can't afford at the moment you can just renegotiate the deal and give them something you have in stock, there's a button for that too in the negotiation window

    The pattern of this game seems to be that you need to wage war constantly to gain more resources to support your armies (otherwise you run out of food very quickly). As soon as you spend a few turns with a 20-stack without doing anything, you've lost the game. At the same time, you get declared upon constantly by random AI, so if you try to wage war you get piled on by AI that can build armies faster than the player can. You also can't disband armies because it takes too long to build them back up, the best you can do is park them in a fort for the -50% upkeep. Idk who decided that the combination of extreme unit upkeep, extreme recruitment limits, and extreme AI unit spam was a fun combination. I have yet to see anyone finish a campaign on YT or even get beyond the first few hours. Every series just ends without comment and they quietly start another one.

  • @meilinchan7314
    @meilinchan7314 2 місяці тому

    The last time i checked, historically there were 4 ways to deal with chariots. The most commonly quoted one was to use pikes and skirmishers. Some historians speculate that this was how the Bronze Age ended - a revolution in military tactics. The second one was to place traps for them - either through the use of caltrops - or in the case of the Romans, walls of wooden stakes. The third ones was not to fight them at all - Caesar refused to engage them during his British expedition. Similarly at Gaugamela, Alexander chose not to confront the Persian chariots. His soldiers simply chose to stand back, let the chariots pass through, then pursue them with light foot and light horse .... again, armed with javelins....

    It was a bad idea to have moved the chariots out to flank those melee units once they made contact with the archers. There were 2 archer units still up, you should've left the chariots to suppress those archer units - perhaps you could've saved more units - the replenishment rates look horrible.

    • @JayPixl
      @JayPixl 2 місяці тому

      Very true! Yeh replenishment takes a good bit of time but you can focus on improving the rate through your general.

      I personally think they should be focusing on Empire Total War 2, Rome Total War 3, Medieval Total War 3. We have been asking for these games forever, but they don't seem interested in wanting to release them. One reason could be because their current engine is designed for Troy and Pharaoh and not for a complete reskin, but what do i know! Hope creativeassembly gets back to its good years.

      @EverGameStudiosThey're already kind of in the game under a different name, because some scholars assume habiru was sometimes used as a term for hebrew in some areas and there is a horde faction called habiru that starts in southern Canaan. So if you want to you could interpret them to be Hebrews.

    Nice video! One thing, keep in mind to always attack the enemy army spanned near you in every Total War title, and then if you have the range, take the city aswell. The game is created in such way that in your first or max second turn you get your enemy's city. Just to give you a boost at the start. Evey playable nation have the same setting. If you miss that then every playable AI faction is already going to be ahead of you. ;) Plus, you are going to have more rounds building up with more cities and normalizing happiness! Keep at it! It's a great game! PS: you lucky you! Odysseus surviving that battle was so clutch.
