Waterproof Aluminum Battery Enclosure with Heatsink Testing
Переглядів 322 роки тому
I ran a 250w bulb inside the enclosure with the lid on for one hour. Eventually the charge controller hit 100°F but that's still fine for it. It would've worked even better if I used the bolts to secure the lid, instead of clamps, because I made silicone gasket for the lid, the lid doesn't make direct metal on metal contact with the rest of the enclosure, so the heat sink can't pull out heat as...

Prius Isolation Fault Discussion

In this video I discuss high voltage isolation faults, what it is, why it's dangerous, how to test for it. In the next video I show how I actually do the test. A really good tool to have is a 50v-600v AC/DC test light, basically if there's enough amperage to light up the light, it's enough to hurt you, this would indicate there is 50 volts and enough current to actually run a load.

It does have an OBD port near driver's left knee and if you use OBD Alfa (even free version) you can do all kinds of diagnostics. Yes it does not have "emissions" in the sense of ICE car but it uses the same protocol/plug etc. for service scan tool to talk to the systems on the car. It is actually quite comprehensive as Bosch designed the system on this car. Serwus!

Then this video you made should this be my next step and would I possibly use a pressure washer that has a canister I can fill with gas and seafoam and push that through the lines? Should I then replace the sock? Can it be cleaned instead and should I attempt to clean injectors? Please someone help

I'm getting P0136 code on my second replacement downstream O2 sensor. Its reading zero volts just like yours but I don't have any codes besides P0136. MPGs have been steadily decreasing. Was at 40 pre code now im at 36 mpg. Using the Denso 234-4623 which is OEM so not like its the wrong one. Not sure what is wrong but thanks for posting these troubleshootings, closest ive seen... Backstory is I had my cat stolen and they obviously cut the O2 sensor too. Found an OEM cat on fb marketplace that was allegedly parted out off a wrecked prius. It wasn't cut/was already welded to the exhaust so I just removed what was left of my exhaust and popped this one in. The guy gave me an old O2 sensor too which pretty much immediately threw P0136 so I replaced it with a new denso and that eventually threw the same code after a couple weeks. Strange it didn't fail right away. Wondering whether it's worth the money to get another O2 sensor or if there might be something deeper going on. Maybe the cat is plugged. Not sure what to do, if you have any advice... Thanks...

These 2017 model can now be found under $10K with less than 30K odometer miles on them, but can you simultaneously recharge the car and have the air conditiong on while charging the car at public charging station's? (The faster location's that can charge the car in under 1 hour?) If you can, do you think that would increase the wait time for the car to fully charge? P.S. I like the concept of this car's saving you apx $150.00 a month on gas, but so far I've not found proof, you can charge the car at a residential setting that takes less than 6 hours even with the $500.00 to $1,000 level 2 home charging upgrade kits.

I own a Fiat 500e and have since 2015. I drove it off the lot brand new. I’ve learned a great deal about EV ownership in the last 6 years. To answer your question about AC while charging, it does affect battery life. Anytime you use the heat/air it diminishes the cars range by 7-9 miles. So, if your want a faster charge, don’t turn on the AC. To address your other concern, typical wall outlets in America have a standard voltage amount: 110. You’re right, not enough output to fully charge in 6 hours, but that also depends on what your starting point is. If the battery is at 75%, you could definitely get to 100% in under 6 hours, but if the battery is at 35%, probably won’t reach a full charge in that amount of time. Some EV owners cough up the $$$ and purchase the Level 2 or Level 3 charging decks and have them installed in their garages. I do not have this in my home. I charge on my standard wall outlet. And have since purchased solar panels for my home. Hope this helps : )

@@tacosaregood8848 Hi thanks for taking the time to read my question, I've learned a little more since than, for example I now believe if I got my homes electrical output checked out, it's likely my home can support the 0 to 100% charged battery in apx 4 hours, . I'm still not sure about the following question, I know you tried to answer it, so let me ask it again. How much longer if any would it take for say a fully drained battery to charge the 500E at a public charging station, if I had to sit inside the car with the air conditiong on, because it was over 110 degrees outside? (This is often the case in the summer , major cities, like Palm Springs, Phoenix, Las Vegas, etc basically alot of SouthWest cities from June to August, ) This is one of the things that holds me back from purchasing,

Flo Lou on a regular 240v charger which is what you will find at charging stations it will charge about 20-24 miles in an hour except the last 80-100% of the battery, takes a little longer. If you have a commute of longer than 60 miles, I would not get this car because speed, temperature, terrain, and heating or cooling all affect the range of this car.

As long as the cat sensor doesn't go above .9 volt, you won't set the CEL. There is a resistor and capacitor circuit you can put on the sensor leads (under the floor mat) that will keep it under .9 volts if the cat is dying.

    • @jeffy911

    • @amazoidal

I haven't got it dialed in yet. I removed the floor mat and went into the cable and have 3 wires out with clips to hold the original wires. My CEL is coming on many times a day, as soon as a cycle is run. Now I need to hook up my resistance and capacitor substitution boxes and try to dial in a combination. I tried just resistance but without a capacitor across the line it just triggers the CEL. Smart computer. My Prius is a 2005 with 200k. I've been able to fool the smog man by clearing the codes and driving until the 3 sensors clear. Then I have a limited time to visit the smog guy and have him see "no codes". I have done this for 3x every two years. Here in Calif, you have to buy an OEM cat for over $1600. Or find somebody that will sell you a cat off a wreck. My son has a 2008. I could pull his off for the smog but it's a hassle. Soon I will try the sub boxes and try to dial it in.

Yes, you drive until the scanner shows everything is complete. Just varied driving cycle. Might take 20 miles or so. My cat was bad for years. For about 6 years (3 smog checks), I was able to fool the inspector by clearing codes, doing the driving cycle and just upon completing the cycle, getting the smog test before driven enough to bring the cat code back. In Calif we have a static test with the engine not running. Just reads codes and looks to see you have an OEM cat. It's all a matter of timing. But eventually the cat will die and you can't play the game.

You can replace the heat shield over the manifold with a muffler armor kit produced by Heatshield Products Inc. The muffler armor kit has an aluminum flexible shell with soft heat shield material underneath. You can attached it to the manifold with the three 33'" long heat rated aluminum Zip ties that are included in the kit. This method sure beats trying to drill and tap the old screw holes. @michael47lamb 5 років тому

Very interesting. But I can see a couple potential problems viewers should watch out for, assuming they want to go to as much trouble as you have. First doing what you did would only help a little for a car with no battery issues (no DTC's in the computer relating to the pack.) But there is not a lot of point to it for a healthy pack since the computer does a fair job of balancing on its own in a Prius. If this was an early Honda hybrid that is a totally different story though! Trying what you did to a early Prius pack with problems is an invitation to possibly a fire in a cell. I would strongly suggest before doing anything like your procedure on an old Prius, you run something like Dr Prius to get an idea what each block is doing. Or better yet take off the battery box cover (no small thing either) and measure each module directly, looking for weak cells. If you find any, DO NOT use your procedure on that pack until the bad module has been replaced with a known good one. Best of luck in your research!

    • @voltekhybridevrepair9901
      @voltekhybridevrepair9901 5 років тому

You're correct this probably would not fix a hybrid battery issue where it was producing a code, like If there was a module that had a cell fail in it. Cycling and balancing can bring back some capacity, but it's no silver bullet. I mean a 10+ year old battery with 200k+ miles, even with all the reconditioning in the world, is still an old battery. The Prius, and all other earlier hybrids that use nickel metal hydride batteries, they do not have a battery management system, they have a battery monitoring system. The BMS in a Prius cannot actively balance modules, all it does is monitor them and if it sees a problem it will reduce power to and from the pack depending on how bad the problem is, and turn on MIL. To stay balanced, these packs rely on having modules that are perfectly balanced with the same performance and chemistry, and by only running them between 40%-80% SOC. It amazes me it actually works as good as it does; but this is why rebuilt packs don't last very long, unless you analyze and match them perfectly. There's no additional risk by doing this in the vehicle, except of course if there was a problem it would happen inside the vehicle, which could turn into a car fire instead of a bench fire. Even though i can only see block voltages (pairs of modules) I can still easily identify if theres a bad or weak module (if it wasn't safe to monitor them that way than Toyota wouldn't have designed it that way) You would not want to do a deep discharge test because it could over discharge a module; if your block voltages were all 14v, ideally each module would be 7v, however its possible that one module could be 6v and the other 8v, would still show 14v but if you discharged any further it would damage a module. The block voltage is calculated by adding two module voltages together, so simply dividing by 2 does not necessarily give the actual module voltages. But in that example, what I would most likely see is block voltages at 14v, and then one at 12.8v, when you see a 1.0v-1.4v difference I know theres a bad cell. Or if they stay balanced with each other pretty closely but drop really fast, there's not a bad cell but all of the modules are weak and have low capacity. Safety first always! I had the car in neutral in case there was a problem I would just push it out of my garage LOL but seriously you must think about those things, a car fire in your garage will be a house fire in your house in a short time!
