ASR: A Growing Concern in the Pool Industry John McIntyre
In this conversation, John McIntyre, an expert in aquatic consulting, discusses the critical issue of Alkalized Silica Reaction (ASR) in pools. He explains the science behind ASR, its impact on pool structures compared to other constructions, and the factors that contribute to its occurrence. The conversation also covers how to identify ASR, potential solutions for affected pools, and best practices for prevention. McIntyre emphasizes the importance of using proper materials and construction techniques to mitigate the risks associated with ASR, as well as the evolving landscape of insurance responses to ASR claims. takeaways ASR is a reaction between the alkalize in the cement and reactive minerals in aggregates. The reaction can take up to three years to become symptomatic. Spiderweb cracking is a key indicator of ASR in pools. Wet shotcrete is more prone to ASR than dry shotcrete. Geographic factors influence the prevalence of ASR cases. Proper testing of materials is crucial to prevent ASR. Insurance companies are beginning to pay out for ASR-related claims. Good construction practices can mitigate ASR risks. Educating pool builders on ASR is essential for prevention. The pool industry is facing a buyer beware market regarding ASR.

    What is the best thing to do after a quartzite finish has been applied and there’s “water troweling” or it kinda looks like calcium where a trow has been? I was told a hot start might be best but I’m also aware how evasive this practice is. Please advise

    So low total alkalinity, high calcium hardness and high stabilizer is the main cause? I always thought it was due to having a newly plastered pool sit out in the hot sun for too long before filling up completely, causing cracks in the plaster.

  • @Jasheon
    @Jasheon 4 роки тому

    Bullshit, calcium nodules and water chemistry has nothing to do with 1 another. Calcium nodules come from allowing the plaster to sit dry for too long in the hot or direct sun light

    • @pkushdreamer
      @pkushdreamer 4 роки тому

      Yes Bull shit. Water chemistry has nothing to do with it. I guess this video is designed to cover the asses of the people for poor installation of the plaster and the pool builders and then pass the buck to the service company.

    Hi Allen. Thanks for the video. A couple of questions How old is the pool surface in the video? It seems this pool had extreme scale with possible hi SI. You briefly mention balance of water the water swings over time. Did this pool have extreme swings or is most of the etching from age? Thanks

    • @mattmatt222333
      @mattmatt222333 2 роки тому

      IME home owners always neglect to test the cyanuric acid or realize the effect it has on water chemistry. Meaning the water is actually aggressive when they think it's in balance.

    I had Bogner Pools, out of Riverside Ca., build my pool in 2000. (Very good job) In about 2008 I noticed my city water had a LOT of rust and, what a city water worker called "Ferrous", in it, used to coagulate water impurities for filtering. I have pictures of my whole-house and pool filter elements filled with what looks like pure rust, dark brownish orange. I grew up with a pool so I take care of my own. I completely understand the plumbing system as I'm a plumbing contractor. But I do not know the effects of these various water impurities have on my pool surface. Can you help me?

      This Message from Alan Smith Sounds like Iron stains. Usually from well water but not always. A good stain prevention after a lite acid wash should take care of the problem.

Knowing the high reguard the industry holds for your input I can think of no better way to introduce our product to the US market, than to have you put it to the test. I have bragged about the work the NPC has done to standardize the industry to my counterparts in Canads. I can't think of a better confidence builder for my sales force or pool builder/ designer clients.
