Limpopo Sardine for win at Goudertrouw dam - Bass Fishing
Goedertrouw Dam Bass Report
Conditions: Air temp 35°C
Wind: NE 8km/h increasing
With temperatures rising and bass on the move we decided to head to the jewel of Zululand, Lake Phobane AKA Goedertrouw Dam for a much-needed day’s bassing with friends. Known for its breath-taking views, big crocs and even bigger bass.
Lionel and I have made an annual trip to Goedies and this year we decided to take the boat out and explore some of the shallow rocky points leading into spawning bays and target some of the deep transition areas around the dam wall and the steep cliffs the dam is known for.
With fish in all three stages of the spawn and a front moving in we wanted to target active fish up shallow using soft plastics, as recent reports indicated that fish were being a bit finicky with the water clarity starting to improve. From the outset, we noticed that the brighter-coloured and larger profiled baits worked better. Fishing the lightest weights possible to get baits down but avoid getting hung up in the rocks was key. Our primary tactics included fishing McArthy 6” Stumpis weightless for shallow areas, a very light Texas on steeper drops and a 1/8oz Shaky head when trying to maintain bottom contact. The deeper areas required us to slow things down completely, almost dead-sticking as the boat drifted.
As the day progressed and fish moved back into the shallows we switched to a 4” Gambit in Limpopo Sardine and managed to catch the biggest fish of the day a 3.48kg spawned female.
Lures that did most of the damage were the brightly coloured Crab and NEW Hot Avocado, which are sure to become “Goedertrouw Killers”, especially for the deeper areas and larger Bass.
The end result...
We ended of the day with 47 bass for a solid 6-hour session, although we probably could have squeaked out a few more but we had to break for lunch, which consisted of a delicious bunny chow and cake for dessert.
Score for the day: 2 Bass over 3kg - 3.35kg, 3.48kg and 8 Bass around 1.5kg.
Gear Used:
Rods- Okuma Recon and Psycho Sticks
Reels- Okuma Ceymar, Hakai and Helios
Lines- Boss Braid Slick, New Loomis Connect Braid and Elbe Fluorocarbon
Hooks- Hayabusa power stage and BKK Chimera 4/0 to 5/0

Cutting Blade Fishing Hook BKK
Переглядів 30121 день тому
The BKK Chinu-R Shark hooks are designed perfectly for scratching along with general edible fishing (shore & offshore). The BKK Cutting Blade hook point has excellent impaling power and a low piercing resistance and its offset design results in high exposure with the muscles of the fish, maintaining a high self-setting hook-up ratio. The Black Nickel coating performs very well when it comes to ...
