Wow beautiful inks and artwork!
Just came across this video after what feels like weeks trying to find a coherent tutorial. This was extremely helpful as an artist who has just begun digitizing her artwork. Thank you so much! I know this video is fairly old, but would you be willing to make a tutorial of the manual process you described near the end of your video? I would like to learn how to rotate my scans as mine turned out a bit crooked using the photomerge option. Thanks!
Hey thanks so much for the comment! I’m glad you found it helpful. I can definitely add that to my list. I’m working on a photoshop for artists course at the moment so that suggestion is helpful for knowing what other things people specifically want to learn. 🙂 stay tuned!
is there a way to secure it the table / desk top?
Not without modifying it yourself to do so unfortunately.
Barb this is such a spectacular pencil sharpener. I just discovered your UA-cam channel and I am loving your content you film things so fantastically and your videos are such spectacular quality. The drawing you showed of the bird is truly amazing art work. I hope you’ll be uploading more videos on UA-cam your content is incredible
Hey! Thank you so much for your lovely comment. 😊 I’m hoping to upload a bunch more videos soon. Editing just takes me way too long 😅 working on fixing that!
THe prisma wax bloom actually works great since bell peppers are so damn waxy.
This saved my art print. Thank you!
Glad I could help!

Ok thx for the tip 😊

Wowwww amazing
Omg the painting is so cute you go girly!!
Thank you!!

Great but what when marker will fade? It will fade faster than coloured pencils. How to prevent it?
Hi there! The markers I use are made with India ink and are highly lightfast so they should not fade. Using alcohol based markers like Coptic for example have a higher chance of fading. In this technique the markers are helping fill the white of the paper but ideally you are using a layer of coloured pencil over top of marker. I’m terms of preventing it you just need to make sure you are always using products that have high lightfast ratings
Thanks for sharing your tips! I’m new to this process but I want to do this for several of my art pieces. 🙂
Thank you for leaving a comment! I hope this process is helpful for you!
Perfection!!!
Hi. I am beginning artist. When creating art to sell is it necessary to use brands other than Crayola or generic brands from Michael's and Hobby Lobby in order to guarantee the piece will last?
Hi Sheryll! Thanks for your comment. I would strongly recommend that if you are selling artwork to someone to use brands that have high lightfast ratings. Michaels and Hobby Lobby both carry brands that have great lightfast ratings but also ones that don’t. The brands that are higher quality will usually list their ratings on the packaging somewhere so for example Prismacolor, Faber-Castell and Derwent are a few. These pencils will also be more expensive but it’s because the quality is higher and therefore they will have longer lasting pigments in them.
@@BarbSotiArt thanks so much! I have always enjoyed creating art especially for other people and now that I may need to go back to work I hope this can be something to create an income. It has been a great source of therapy for me lately.
Oh that’s wonderful! Art is definitely therapeutic and it’s an even better bonus if you can make an income from it. Good luck with your art journey! 🎉
Very helpful, to-the-point video! Thank you!
Thank you! <3
This is gorgeous! Love the feather texture!
Thank you! I appreciate the the kind comment!
Thank u so much 😘
You’re very welcome!
Thank you Loads of clear information...I could probably take more in if it was a bit slower, bit more time to make notes. I am a beginner!
Hi Jane, thank you for the feedback! I’m working on putting together a Photoshop for Artists beginners class that will go through things a bit slower and in more detail. I can let you know when it’s available if you are interested. In the meantime you can slow down the speed of the video if you want by clicking the gear icon in the right hand bottom corner of the video screen. A little window will pop up and there should be a setting for playback speed. Make sure an ad isn’t playing when you try this or the setting won’t come up.
Not QUITE a solution, but you can turn the video speed down to .75x if that helps any for ya.
I just watched your video on your 5 Favorite Apps for Artist and I found it extremely helpful!! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this.
Thanks Laura! I appreciate you taking the time to comment and I’m glad you found it helpful 😃
This is amazing! I just bought some of the acrylics and I'm excited to try them!
I was on the fence between Cezanne & Prisma color. Seeing the vibrant colors come alive in your beautiful drawing helped me decide these are the pencils I want to purchase. Thanks for sharing your lovely artwork & your honest feedback on these pencils
You're welcome, I'm glad you found it helpful!
This was so helpful! Thank you! I wish I watched this video long ago, it would have saved me a lot of time!
Thanks so much for your comment! I’m glad you found it helpful 😃
Great tutorial. I'm going to try this! I tried a 3-pepper drawing with red, yellow and orange and didn't like the way the yellow pepper turned out. Your color was nice and uniform. Thank you for the great information!
Hi! Thanks for taking the time to comment! I’m glad you found it helpful. This technique was definitely a game changer for me 🙂
Do you know why 1 of the merged images won’t let me clone but the other one does? The layers aren’t locked.
Hi Kelly! It’s hard to tell without being able to see your photoshop file but it could be a couple of things. The first thing I would check is to make sure you are using the latest version of Photoshop. Sometimes it gets buggy. You could try using a previous version of the program like Photoshop 2020 and see if you still get the same issue. If you’re trying to use the clone tool as opposed to the mask reveal and conceal paint brush you might need to change your setting in top menu where is says “Sample” to Current & Below. You will need to be clicked on the clone stamp tool to be able to see this menu that typically runs across the top of the photoshop window frame. Hope some of these suggestions help!
This video helped A lot thanks for sharing 😊😊😊
Thanks so much for this awesome tutorial. As I am experimenting with this, the more scans added to the photo merge, the better the final result and a lot less blurring at the seams!
Hi Nicole! So glad you found this helpful. I know it was a game-changer for me!
Wow, what a neat video and cool artwork! Thank you for demonstrating how the pencils layer down and their abilities. As for their perfomance, how would you rate them in terms of hard or soft?
Hi Oksana! I’m so sorry I’m replying so late to your comment. I would say the are softer and similar in feel to Prismacolor. They have more of a waxy feel to them.
@@BarbSotiArt all good and ty so much for replying. Would you use them again?
The Cezanne pencils look great and love the fun and colorful artwork!
Thanks so much! They were fun ti work with!
That was awesome! Great share! Cheers!

Can I buy 36 set of lightfast for creating human portraits
Hello! You could but it would depend on what type of skin tones you are trying to render. In my opinion the selection in the 36 set is more appropriate for darker ranges of skin tones than lighter for example. You could always purchase lighter flesh toned pencils separately in open stock if you needed them in addition to this set.
@@BarbSotiArt actually in my country they don't sell open stock, so it's really hard for me to decide...as I don't know if I'll like them or not
Oh no! Well in that case I would consider a different set perhaps. Many of the company websites show exactly what colours you get in the set when you purchase so if you’re looking to purchase smaller sets specifically for portraits I would have a look at what the colour range is in the size you want to buy. Faber-Castell Polychromos is another option to look at or Even Prismacolor Premier if you want something with a softer feel.
Thanks Barb, super helpful!
You’re very welcome! Glad you enjoyed it
thank you so much for this review! I wonder if the result will be good as well on Conte a Paris pencils, but it seems that prismacolor has the same diameter, and that at least one of the pencils you did test had the same consistency / softness. Thank you again!
You're very welcome, I'm glad you found it helpful! I just tried testing it quickly with a Conte à Paris pencil that I have and the barrel seemed to be a bit too wide to fit into the sharpener. I would have to force it in and in this case, I'm not sure it would sharpen properly. Some of the larger barrel pencils will fit into this sharpener but I wouldn't recommend it for Conte à Paris based on my testing.
@BarbSotiArt Hey, I have to thank you again then, you're so kind! Unfortunately this is what I fear, that the barrel of the Conte a Paris pencils is too wide... despite that brand is listed among the ones compatible with that pencil sharpener. In the meantime I've already ordered it, I guess I can use it with other pencils, and probably with sanguine pencils from another brand similar to Conte a Paris even if until now I didn't find anything like that specific pencil, but I didn't probably searched enough.
@@giddue My pleasure! Yes, I think the statement might be misleading if they are saying it works with that pencil type. It doesn’t in my experience. I don’t think you have wasted your money though, this sharpener is great for many others. If I come across a sharpener that works comfortably with larger barrelled pencils I will share it! 😊
@@BarbSotiArt thank you again for your kindness! And by the way your art is great!!
If you blend using an alcohol blender pen, would this affect the lightfastness?
Hi Gillina! That's a great question. Typically lightfastness has more to do with the quality of the pigment. For example, alcohol markers aren't lightfast because the pigments they are using aren't lightfast. To my knowledge, the blending pen shouldn't affect the lightfastness, but I suppose it's always possible. If you are still concerned about it I would just use a different blending method instead of the blending pen. Hope this helps!
Wow what a great video! Great job!
Thank so much! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Love this artwork and never thought to use all these media’s together like this ❤️
Thanks so much! I'm glad this may have sparked some inspiration for you :)
Your drawing is amazing!! I've wanted to make art prints for about two years now and have gone to many scanning services but have had not the best experience. I was wondering if you have any recommendations for scanners (and if you would recommend buying a scanner to someone who is just starting out). I noticed that when you zoomed up, the detail and pencil marks were very visible and I want to have scans that needs minimal editing to look as close as possible to the original. The ones I've had done in the past have either been terrible quality but good colour, or great quality but the colours are way off and are hard to edit back. Thank you 🌼
Hello! Thank you so much! Finding a good scanner can be a bit tricky. I use an Epson scanner that is built into my Workforce printer. It does a great job but, it can have a very heavy bias towards magenta and red in the scan so I almost always have to edit it in Photoshop afterwards. If you use a professional scanning service through a local printer they will likely be somewhat expensive but they will usually do all of the colour correcting for you. If you are going to scan and print your own prints I would recommend learning a little bit of Adobe Photoshop or even Adobe Lightroom is a good program that is a bit easier to use and focuses mostly on colour. You can purchase Adobe Creative Cloud subscriptions for each of those programs by themselves. Epson and Canon in general are great companies to buy scanners from in my opinion. A good artist friend of mine recommends the Epson Perfection V600 photo scanner. I have not tried this one but I trust his opinion. How clean and how much editing your scanned drawing needs depends on the original drawing to some extent. I scan my drawings at 600 ppi so that I can enlarge them later if I want to. You will almost always see the marks very clearly when you are zoomed in that close. That doesn't mean at the 100% or actual size that it will be that visible. A good quality scan will reflect what your drawing looks like in person at actual size. Another consideration is your computer screen colour might be slightly off which is why you are seeing such a difference in colour. Some artists only photograph their work and never scan it because they get a better representation of the work that way. That can come with it's own challenges as well though if you have limited experience in photography or don't have a good enough camera. I have done both and at times have photoshopped a photograph and scan together to get the right representation of something I used metallic paint on. Hope this helps and thank you so much for leaving a comment! :)
@@BarbSotiArt Thank you!! I really appreciate you taking the time to help. The Epson Perfection V600 Photo Scanner is actually one I was looking at. Thanks again
@@aoifemcveigh880 Amazing! Glad to help, and good luck :)

Is Arty and Photoshop Express for digital drawers or pencil-and-paper ones?
Hi! Thanks for your question. Arty is best suited for traditional pencil and paper artists and Photoshop Express can be useful for either.
@@BarbSotiArt oh ok. Ty for replying
Awesome! Thank you for sharing. I had no idea this was a thing! Your cat turned out beautiful. Does this seem to help with how long it takes to do a color pencil portrait?
Kelly Laher Thanks for your comment! Yes I believe it does help, but it depends a little on your rendering techniques. The biggest advantage I found was that I didn’t have to be as careful to leave white areas because the indentations the pen cutter makes allows you to render right over top of them. That said it does take time to create the indentations so time wise maybe not a significant amount but I feel like your result would be much more consistent with this tool.
@@BarbSotiArt i have to give it a go now! Thank you soo much for your answer I am thoroughly enjoying your channel!
Kelly Laher definitely do! Thanks so much that means a lot 🥰
Thank you, that is a great idea.
Glad it was helpful!
I have all these and they aren't great for my Prismacolor Premier pencils.
Carmelle LaPointe Prismacolor is notorious for breaking no matter the sharpener. I find sometimes these will work well with my Prismacolors and other times not at all. It’s unfortunate because I like using the brand. Do you have a sharpener you find works well with them?
@@BarbSotiArt yes, so far after years of coloring I just started using the Kum Long Point 2 step hand held sharpener. It has one side that shaves it and the other side makes a point. I believe it is the wood their using. Not the wax core. The cores are delicate.
@@carmellelapointe7583 Oh wonderful, yes that's one of the sharpeners I mention in the video. :) I agree, I think the quality of the wood is not very good anymore. I've had the cores break on almost every pencil brand at times but a good quality wood casing makes a big difference.
Hi,,,I am using iphone but still couldn’t find that “Arty” app in apple store
I would assume it's available in most versions of the app store. Here it is in the Canadian Apple app store apps.apple.com/ca/app/arty/id1239154135 Here's another link for it in the US App store apps.apple.com/us/app/id1239154135?mt=8 The developer is Andy Drizen, you could try searching him as well if neither of those links work for you or redirect you. Hope this helps! :)
@@BarbSotiArt tysm I found it❤️
Is Arty still available on play store?
Unfortunately, I think that one is only available for iPhone and iPad devices. I know a lot of people have been asking about it for different types of phones so hopefully, they develop a version of it for that soon.
I don't know if youre still searching for an app like arty but maybe colored pencil picker can help:))
I just downloaded it from the Apple Appstore - unfortunately I couldn't get it to load any of my images - this is on an iPad running ios 15. So I can't advise on it's application
